Product Overview

Chiaro is a natural stone travertine that illustrates a rustic "old world" charm. Perfect for today's casual lifestyle. With a large selection of sizes and accessories to choose from, chiaro can easily be laid in a pattern or single layout. This particular travertine is suitable for residential and commercial installations, including kitchens and bathrooms. Note: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

If you have a full size tile or a another product made with this tile, that is ok. What is its availability? MS International 3 In. x 6 In. Bologna Chiaro Travertine Floor & Wall Tile Model # THDW3-T-CH3X6T Internet # 100664325 Store SKU # 275032

If it is not available in a nearby store you can order it online, have it shipped to the store, take it home and review it. If it is not what you want the nice thing about Home Depot is that you can return it.

Individual tiles or a Sheet?

Is this individual tiles, or is it a sheet on mesh backing? If it's individual, and 8 come in a case (which is 1 sq. ft) how do 8 - 3x6 tiles make up a square foot? I am trying to determine how much to order, and I've gotten 3 different responses from 3 different people.
Asked by: AP123
They come in a package and do not have a mesh backing. There are eight tiles stacked on top of each other, like a deck of cards (but eight tiles, not fifty two). Each tile is 3 in X 6 in, or 1/4 ft X 1/2 ft = 1/8 ft. So, eight tiles X 1/8 ft per tile = one square ft. The photo is a bit misleading and could easily be misinterpreted as tiles on a mesh backing. I bought several packages of the tiles and they are stacked, not laid out in a square. BTW, I suggest you carefully look through the packages because they can have a few broken tiles that are not visible from the outside of the package, for example, if the tile is split in half and you would not see this from the outside of the package. I hope that makes sense. These really are great looking tiles, very natural and sort of soft to the touch. Travertine has several pores or holes, which get filled by grout, and I would recommend a couple of coats of travertine tile sealer, which Home Depot sells. I put three coats on my entry way floor (I also bought the travertine Medallion that HD sells and used these tiles as a border and it looks great!). The sealant helps keep moisture or dripping water out, which could otherwise seep into the spaces between tile and grout or thinset. Good luck!

I want to install this tile in my kitchen but I am concerned at how hard it would be to clean behind the sink. Will debris wipe off easily?

Asked by: Angie
Hello Angie and thank you for your question. The tile would be beautiful as a backsplash, however it will require some pre-installation and maintenance attention. Any open pits should be filled and the tiles should be sealed with a penetrating sealer before installing. Normal maintenance includes checking the tiles and refilling as needed (since the filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids) and sealing as needed to ensure a beautiful long life. Only mild cleaners should be used and any debris should be promptly wiped off the surface. Be sure to also check out the customer reviews for additional information from persons who have installed this tile. Best wishes on your project.

How do you clean this

Asked by: lauren
Thank you for your question. In general it is recommended using some dry methods of cleaning such as Vacuum cleaning, light brushing, cleaning with a dry cloth. If the tile is grouted, filled and sealed, then water and a sponge could also be used for cleaning.

Can you score and snap this tile or wet saw it only?

Asked by: DW
Its always better with any natural stone tile to use a wet tile saw to accurately get the job done. Joseph

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really enjoyed this project! This travertine stone is gorgeous! I Love the porus, smooth look and the mingled light and dark colors. I do feel the packaging can be a little better even though I did not have any broken stone tiles, they were very dusty. I started off by taking my vacuum cleaner and going over each stone to get rid of the dust and grit. A wet sponge was used to wipe each stone and I emptied my water after every pack. I placed each stone facing up on a towel and let dry over night. Wipe down your walls with water and vinegar to get rid of grease and dirt, let dry over night. The next day I used 511 prego sealer with a paint sponge while still on towel and let sit on stones for 3-5 minutes, wipe off with white cloth and cure over night. Simple mat placed on wall (very sticky) be sure to over lap so you don't have a gap between simple mat. Do not peel layer off simple mat unless your ready to place your tiles on wall because the sticky will dry out! Use a grout float to get out air bubbles on simple mat. It's easier to have tiles on counter how there to go on wall! I bought a tile cutter for $20.00 it's NOT the best but will work. We broke a few trying to score them. To get dust off I vacuumed them again to make sure they were good and clean before placing on simple mat! Spacers were placed between bottom and sides of my stone tiles, you may have to move tiles around just a little to get straight. I Let stones bond over night with simple. So that my porus stones didn't get grout in them, I taped EACH stone. That's why I chose this perticular stone was because the porus look! Use premixed grout (linen was my choice of color). Now it's time to grout with a grout float. Only do small sections at a time and take tape off once your finished because I noticed on a few that the grout made tape gooey. Taping was worth the time! I put grout between counter and stone, I've read several things to do about this (grout or put caulk to protect). Protect your counters because grout will dry and is very hard to get up. Im redoing my counters anyway so I just removed what I could and sanded counters later. Remove tape at this time, may need a sharp knife to help get tape started. Take damp white cloth and wipe down. Now let dry 24 hours! I waited a week and put another coat of 511 dealer ALL over backsplash, grout and stone. Caulk if needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GORGEOUS!!!! I have always loved the look of authentic stone back splash especially with cream colored cabinets. so when we planned our remodel I knew exactly what I wanted. I saw these and Jeffrey court ones and my contractor ended up getting these. They were absolutely gorgeous before and after installation. I love the rustic look of the bricks and that they have holes. it adds so much character!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT! WAY easier to work with then I thought, grout filled in all the holes on some of the tiles I was afraid to use. Looks awesome and if given the change to start over, I would have use the same tile

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous! I was shocked at how gorgeous these stones are for such a modest price. They have a lot of natural texture and color variation, which I love. We used these for our backsplash and we actually chose not to grout them, so as not to fill in all of the craters and crevasses that give them such a unique character. Instead, we just stacked them and sealed the whole thing with a stone sealer at the end. The results are beautiful and we couldn't be happier!! Here is a picture shown with our Venetian Gold granite.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very beautiful tile, especially for the price. I would definitely recommend this tile, however you have to like the tumbled tile look. The tile has lots of holes and character. Holes fill in with grout and look good when finished. If you like DIY projects this product is easy to work with. Make sure you seal tile before grouting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice for the price Enormous variation in appearance made it necessary to scramble and mix tiles from different packages. Choose the grout color carefully, as it will be a major part of the finished look. We chose antique white grout, sanded. The fossilized corals that are visible in many of the tiles adds great visual interest to our backsplash.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks Great! Maybe not a first time DIY'er tile tho. This is a perfect size tile if your floors are a bit uneven you don't need to worry so much as you would with a larger format tile. It was easy to cut and install - I loved that each tile was just 3x6 which makes it light and less cumbersome a task. It arrived with lots of broken pieces so order a lot more than you need. It has lots of voids and holes so be sure to seal it at least two coats before attempting to grout. You will still have a hard time cleaning the grout off the tiles so be sure to pick a color of grout that will accent the tile, I recommend doing a few trials on a tile or two of a couple different colors of grout to see which you like best. We installed this in a small 25 sq foot bathroom floor with white baseboards and pale blue-grey painted walls. It was a major upgrade!!! Gorgeous. You will want to grout and then seal the grout and tiles again after the grout has dried. Since tiles are so small It will take longer to get a big space laid out - so be careful to watch the dryness/consistency of your thin set as you go. Maybe mix up a smaller batch to start.
