Bought the other comparable router at the same price point first because it came with the carry bag and had the tempting service agreement. Should have known I was paying for those things because the actual tool quality was pretty run-of-the-mill. I returned it and bought this router. Don't be fooled by the similar reviews when doing your comparisons. This Makita is a fine, meticulously crafted tool with plastic and metal in all the right places. It routes beautifully, is easy to assemble/disassemble for bit and accessory swaps and the bits don't get heat-stuck (as was the case with the other router). Many add-ons are available for this as well for different applications. If a carry bag is a must i'd recommend searching the web and spending the extra $15 or so for a small Makita bag or just use a generic tote. It's worth it.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DoctorD Great power but can't use wide bits
This is much more powerful than a standard trim router and very useful for doing edge treatments like small roundovers, beading, and trimming from a template using a flush trim bit.
However there is one big issue - the plastic base has a 1-3/8" diameter hole so you can only use bits that are 1-1/4" in diameter or less. This limitation prevents you from using this router many standard bits, most notably a 45 degree chamfer bit. I found it also could not use most rabbeting bits, cove bits, ogee bits, and roundovers that are larger than 3/8".
Makita does not include the dust chute attachment with this router, but Home Depot sells it online for just a few dollars - it is Makita model #195559-1. The website says it is made for the RT700 but it will also fit the RT701 perfectly.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LEDEngineer Great Quality for a tiny router
It's almost all metal, hardly any plastic. Feels super solid and high quality, all the parts move like butter. Motor has plenty of torque, and it is quiet. Depth adjustment is quick and easy, and I was able to set it within .005 and repeat that setting. That's more than good enough for wood work.
It does not handle larger bits with the included base. Also the base is small, and it takes some skill and care to keep it flat when edge routing, especially since there are no side handles. There are other bases available, I have not tried any of those yet, although it looks like the Plunge base will handle larger bits.
It uses a soft-start motor so it is easy to control when you hit the power switch. The speed control works fine, and even at the low setting, the speed stays constant when routing, and does not bog down at all.
There's a traditional shaft lock and it uses a standard 7/8 locking collar, so it's easy to change bits. The top is flat so it stands on end upside-down, which helps when changing bits. I also realized that this router would be excellent for a CNC table, since it has a compact cylindrical body, which would make mounting it easy.

I actually returned the Rigid palm router in place of this one. This model has a wider selection of speeds and fits my hands well. It's also a tough little bugger.

Purchased the Makita trim router to do some pattern routing. The price was great, and it was a Makita. How could I go wrong? I ran into two serious problems with the unit that I purchased. 1) The router got hot as it ran. I suspect that this was due to a bad bearing. And I believe that this may have caused the second issue I had. 2) The depth adjustment would not lock sufficient to keep my depth of cut constant. The router vibrated and ran much louder that any of my other routers. I adjusted/tightened the tension of the depth lock and attempted to continue my project. It was not possible to tighten it enough to securely lock it. As a result of this, I've got some patching to do on the face frame that I was trimming.
Bottom line, I'm returning the router and will be looking for another brand. I've heard good reviews about the Dewalt. We'll see.

I just picked this router up from home depot and all I can say is Wow! This unit is very powerful, and
very refined. I have to say, the first time I turned this beauty on I was in disbelief with how quiet it is.
After testing this unit out I feel that it is of very high quality. I have several Makita power tools. Some of them 15 years old or more and all working perfectly without any failures. Makita build tools that always have a feel and quality above all the rest.
