Answer:
Yes. These batteries are interchangeable, however I'm not sure if the NiCad battery will charge in the NiMh recharger. I had to buy a new recharger to work with NiMh batteries (which also recharges NiCad batteries but not the other way round).

Yes, the 9700 will charge the 9.6 volt nicad batteries. There were/are several form factors of batteries that makita made for various 9.6 v tools, but all of the 9.6 volt nicads will work in this charger. Basically, if it's a makita charger and the battery will fit, the charger will charge it.

The 1804 will also charge this battery. You may note that the battery is a slightly loose fit in the 1804 charger because that charger is "universal" for all of Makita's _NICADS_ and the 18 volt battery has a wide rib that the charger has to accommodate, but the charger is voltage selectable, so it will charge any of the 7 -18 volt nicad batteries that Makita sold/sells. Hi Sabacat, this battery will work with the DC1804 charger. I did not find a DC9700.
There is a DC9710 charger and this battery will work with it.

Answer:
They are getting harder to find, but they turn up in pawn shops and on e-bay. There are lots of the "universal" chargers, Makita model 1804 available. The chargers are pretty bombproof, so buying a used one is not all that risky. I've had two rattling around in my truck for 20+ years and they still work fine.

9.6-Volt Ni-Cd Rechargeable Battery is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Battery Ever Made I have batteries from the early 80's and although they may have diminished as to their run time capacity, they are still good enough to run my 9.6 flashlight. The reason these batteries are still being sold is that the tools they go to are still running more than 30 years later. My 9.6 drill is 38 years young!! The design is genius, a stick that fits "inside" the tool handle instead of hanging off the end! Makita was a leader in cordless tools from day one and they STILL have it nailed!! Read the other 5 star reviews. Lisa and Ernie at 3402 are always awesome for help and advice they found 2 in store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two Amazing Things About This Battery Actually, make that three! The first amazing thing is that this battery fits the two Makita drills that I bought in 1987, more than 25 years ago. The second amazing thing is that Makita cordless drills are so well made that I am still using them 25 years later. The third amazing thing is that my Makita drills saw daily construction site use for 12 of those 25 years and that I am only on my third pair of new batteries. Makita seems to have found a souce for NiCd cells that are bombproof. The original batteries lasted nearly ten years. The second set still hold sufficient charge for casual home shop use. I bought this third set for Justin Case.
