What is the size of this product in terms of cubic foot?

Some potting soils are packaged and sold in cubic foot, some are in quarts. How do we compare the sizes?

Asked by: Moose
From my cursery investigation, 20 Quarts = 1 cu. ft. So 25 Quarts should be 1.25 cu. ft.

What are Gnats? I want to buy potting soil for my flowers however, I keep hearing about this product having "gnats."

Asked by: Martin656
Fungus gnats are tiny black flies that breed in soil. In some cases, soils become infested with fungus gnats. Fungus gnats enter the bagged product through the tiny air holes in the bag that are necessary for the soil to "breathe". Fungus gnats are often mistaken for fruit flies. They do little damage but are unpleasant if present in large numbers. These insects do not feed upon plants, but lay their eggs in soil that contains organic matter. After a week the eggs hatch, and the larvae crawl through the upper layer of the soil. The larvae are white, 1/4 inch long, and have black heads. They feed on fungi that grow on organic matter. The larvae usually do not damage plants but, when present in large numbers, may feed on the roots of some plants, killing very young seedlings. The larvae feed for about 2 weeks before maturing into adults. There can be many generations in a single year. Below are some steps you can take: Let the soil dry out more between each watering. Dry soil helps kill the larvae. Most people tend to over water their plants, and this can make the problem worse. It's especially important to drain the saucers of excess water. Anything left after an hour should be poured out. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks, until the problem is solved. To catch the adults you can putting a small bowl of cider vinegar with a drop of dish washing liquid near the houseplants or use yellow sticky traps. Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but you should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home should be treated. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call us. I had read bad review's about miracle grow, I never really had any problem. Now for some reason it is more debris than soil, Don't know what's going on, (not good bussiness) I think the company should investigate this problem because ii's debris in both the garden and potting soil. I hope they aren't a ware. If they are and thinking it's ok, (That's not good).

Never had a problem. I decided to grow once again (peppers, tomatoes, herbs, carrots, etc.) and it was terrible. It took three weeks to kill off all the gnats with fly strips draped across the pots. It was the only way to kill them all and keep them off your face and going mad. If this wasn't bad enough none of my plants did well. This is very unusual for me. The growth was seriously stunted and never fully matured. My sister used some to replant some of her plants and they all died. If I had to live off what I grew I would starve because this mix is horrible and nothing grew. At first I just thought the seeds were bad but I tried three times different brands. I have been growing in pots for several years and this time everything was a bust! This stuff won't even grow basil and parsley! Buyer beware!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fungus gnats, seemingly an old story I know now I'm late to this party, but it took me re-potting 2 plants over the course of a few months, and getting fungus gnats suddenly in both before i thought to check if there was a connection to the soil I was using. Lo and behold, Miracle-Gro seems to have quite a reputation online for harboring fungus gnats, which are a huge pain to deal with in your house. I know Miracle-Gro has their standard response about it being a natural product and thus prone to infestation etc blah blah. But no other soil seem to have the problem as consistently as theirs so, natural or not, they may want to think about doing something to combat the problem. I certainly wont be buying any more Miracle-Gro until they do.

I have been using Miracle Grow potting mix for years, and I have never been disappointed. I transplant my potted seedlings into larger containers for my deck garden. The plants love it, and I don't have to worry with fussing with fertilizers and other additives. The texture is nice and fluffy, and it retains just enough moisture to keep my plants healthy and strong. It even smells good!

As far as I'm concerned, a potting soil really only has one job: be bug free. You can add nutrients to any old potting soil, but you can't remove bugs that are already there (sure, you can dry out the soil, but that kills your plants too). Within just a few days of first use, I saw several insect eggs "sprouting" in the soil. If you google "Miracle Grow" and "bugs" or "gnats," you'll learn that this is apparently a known problem that Miracle Grow doesn't seem inclined to fix. I actually found several instances of Miracle Grow insisting that they are "just a nuisance" online. I wish I had seen all of this sooner, because I ended up having to throw out every single plant - I couldn't very well keep bug-infested plants indoors. Hopefully someone else reads this and chooses something else. I've used Black Gold before and never had bug issues, although and I'm sure there are other great brands out there

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Potting soil What changed in this soil? I've always had good luck but this year was different. My peppers were stunted the leaves the size of peas, another just looked clorotic all year, I used this along with miracle gro plant food. No bugs or disease. Even blooming plants did not do well, new rose leaves the size of peas, very disappointing I will try another brand next year.

It didn't seem like much was in a bag, but after I was done planting all of my vegatables in pots, I actually had extra! The vegetables also took off growing after being transplanted with this Miracle Gro! Would buy again!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for veggies I prefer this over the garden soil for my vegetables. The lighter potting soil allows the roots to grow deeper easier. My tomato plants reached over 7 ft last summer, and now this is all I will be using in my vegetable gardens!
