Customer Questions & Answers

The 6 I just got from the store are closer to 7 5/8 x 7 5/8 x 15.5. Is that how they are supposed to be?

The store label and my receipt say 8x8x16... I'm not a mason, is it common for them to be so short? Or is it done this way to force customers to by more then they need? I need 24 inches high, not 23...
Asked by: GG
An 8x8x16 is short 3/8" on each dimension to provide for a 3/8" mortar joint all around (7 5/8" x 7 5/8"x 15 5/8")

Asked by: tino
44 feet times 12 inches per foot = 528 inches divided by 16 inches per block = 33 blocks per row times three rows high = 99 blocks. I always order a few extras to allow for cutting or broken blocks.

Oldcastle Product Support states that fly ash "may sometimes be included in the mixture". Since I am considering using these blocks for a raised garden bed to grow food, I am concerned about the level of toxicity due to fly ash. Can you please be more specific of the percentage of fly ash that "may" be used, at least state the maximum percentage amount that could or would be used? Several people have asked this question for gardening and I'm sure we all would like a clearer answer than previously stated. Thank you.
Asked by: Kbunny
Every lot shipped should have listed from the manufacturer the components of the blocks, e.g., if it is manufactured using fly ash. It would be similar to stating 'poison may sometimes be included in the mixture' so a general statement is unacceptable.

can you just stack them or must you use cement
Asked by: deedee
Depends on how high you want to stack them, and what you are using them for. You can use them like huge bricks to build a raised bed 2 or 3 blocks high and filled with dirt. I have made compost bins 3 or 4 high. I wouldn't try to build a shed or garage without mortar.

I was interested in this block because HD doesn't offer a half block and that means they would need to be cut. Notice that the pictured block has a central cavity (midway on the block) that would make cutting them easy but as I said I didn't get the block pictured here and cutting it was very difficult. If I didn't plan to stucco the piers the block I received would have been unusable. HD doesn't offer half blocks or stretcher block.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heavy durable concreate block We made a retaining wall about 3 feet high. Used liquid glue to keep them together and filled them with gravel. Solid as anything you could want! In front of it we dumped 6 loads of dirt and planted arborvitaes.
