Product Overview

One of the few black-leaved plants in existence, this isn't officially a grass, but it's habit and garden use merit it's consideration for edging and other landscaping uses. Black Mondo Grass is tolerant of full sun to part shade, very attractive, and trouble-free in most settings. Rely on it to add dramatic color to the border, garden path, or accent plantings. Just 9 in. high, this plant spreads about a foot wide, with long, slender, elegant leaves of a purple so dark they appear black. It bears small, bright pink blooms in summer, followed by glossy black berries that remain through autumn into winter, but it's primary emphasis is on the splendid foliage. Grow Black Mondo Grass in any good, well-drained soil. It is highly resistant to heat and drought, but appreciates a winter mulch.

This plant spreads -- are there some "babies" included? A gallon container seems large for one plant

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Plants too small I had purchased 7 black mondo grass plants. These plants are very hard to find in stores so I ordered them on-line through Home Depot because I received free shipping. The plants arrived in perfect condition and were packaged very well. I was extremely disappointed in their size. I ordered plants in a gallon container which is what they came in but the plants were so tiny they could have been in a pint container and that would have been too big. I gave three stars because the plants were very healthy - I will just have to wait a few years for these plants to grow to the size I thought I was purchasing. May 8, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst Purchase Ever! I ordered two 1 gallon black mondo grasses @$24.95 each with tax a total of over $52.00 I received two plants that were smaller then a pint. I returned them and purchased them elsewhere. I found the grasses for $11.95 each at 4 times the size. I will never order plants online from Home Depot again! July 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy unusual and evergreen Black Mondo grass has become one of my all time favorite ornamental grasses in my zone 8 garden. It takes drought once established and required little if any fussing with. It loves our soils here (acidic clay with some compost). It spreads but not aggressively making it a wonderful ground cover beneath shrubs which is where I have mine. It also will grow in part shade or full sun here. Whats more is also a beautiful color foil and texture in containers! A big thumbs up in my book on this one. December 18, 2010
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Too expensive. I expected that a one-gallon pot would have more plants. The pot was skimpy for the price, mostly dirt, so I spent over $50 for three small clumps of black mondo grass. If the Christiansburg Home Depot had carried this variety, I could have saved money. I have purchased that much grass in Tallahassee, FL, for about half the price. May 22, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Will buy again These plants showed up immediately and in great shape. They could have been shipped bare root as they had obviously just been placed in the quart sized planter- this would have saved on shipping I'm sure. They are now thriving in my garden. June 12, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Arrived in poor shape, now DEAD The mondo arrived in poor shape, and not only has not recovered, it has DIED. (Unlike the 3x hostas which established well and are thriving.) The mondo really needs to be replaced without cost. July 18, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great different colored plant I have only had these plants for a few weeks, so I couldn't rate them better. They are a great black with a little green on the new leaves. My plants are small and I don't know how big they will get. They seem to be hardy as I put them out and they didn't show signs of distress June 9, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great It was great quality & great service I will definitely do it again I had bought black Mondo grass online before from a different location and I was sent a little tiny three haired thing but home depots was nice & healthy good choice from my part May 8, 2012
