Customer Questions & Answers

Does product co ez GS at SFntain formaldehyde

Asked by: Art
The Foamular Insulation is formaldehyde free. The product is considered an article as it is a manufactured item and not just a fluid or particle. A 'Safe Use Instruction Sheet' is available at that presents this information in detail. Is there an approved list of foam adhesives that won't melt or burn the Foams?

Asked by: Kimeros
We installed foam board in a number of projects, and cans of Great Stuff were perfect to seal the edges and joints. Use the 'Windows' version in any area that may expand and contract, e.g. a roof -- the Windows version remains flexible. If you want to glue pieces together, any latex based adhesive / sealant will work, e.g. DAP 230 or Loctite PowerGrab: Loctite Model # 1589155 Internet # 203009256 Store SKU # 281979 I hope this is helpful. Would this product be safe to insulate the ceiling of a hot yoga studio that could reach temperatures between 100-105 degrees?

Asked by: Yogi
Dear Yogi: Yes ,the maximum service temperature of Foamular is 165 degrees F according to the Owens Corning SPS data sheet. Foam board is very effective and provides R5 per inch -- with one major caveat: it is also flammable and emits toxic gas when it burns. It MUST be covered by an approved 'thermal barrier' in any occupied space, garage, basement, storage area, etc. The standard is 1/2" drywall. If flammability is a concern, Roxul ComfortBoard is a good alternative. It is made from rock wool and is fire resistant. ComfortBoard provides R4 per inch, and installs just like foam board. You would need to cover it to improve the appearance, e.g. with a dropped ceiling or drywall. See: Roxul Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089 Insulation effectiveness also depends on thickness. You may need to add multiple layers to insulate this ceiling. Before you start, also seal every potential air leak through the ceiling -- this is almost as important as insulation. Recessed lights are a common culprit. You can cover and seal them with Tenmat covers. See: Tenmat Model # FF130E, Home Depot Internet # 204286308 Store SKU # 1000012747 Seal the edges with DAP 230 sealant. For large gaps, the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff spray foam is a good solution. (But cannot be used near any source of heat.) I hope this is helpful. Mark

Customer Reviews

FOAMULAR 250 2 in. x 2 ft. x 8 ft. Tongue and Groove R-10 Insulation Sheathing is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Owens-Corning 2-inch rigid insulation. Great stuff I have used this product for insulating basement walls, crawlspace walls, and other related projects. The two-inch thick product has R.10 and I have doubled up to 4 inches in certain spots to get R.20 total. This product is ideal for places where you do not stud out the area such as workshops, crawlspaces, etc. Also, this is available in the 2 foot by 4 foot size! So, there is no need to cut the panels down from a four-foot width panel to get through problem accessways such as those for crawl spaces. Lastly, I eagerly recommend this product to bring attic access panel R-values up. Just cut to fit your access plywood panel and glue the insulation to it. A dream product that works, is easily cut and worked, and does the job!! A perfect score from me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective Insulation I purchased sheets of this in R10 and installed double thicknesses on the wall inside the unheated garage attic to provide insulation for my master bedroom wall. The comfort level in this room was immediatly improved. Drafts and the feeling of cold damp air from our Colorado winter immediately subsided. This product coupled with blown in celulose insulation provided the most pleasant winter I've had in many years. Also--at age 50 this year, I did it myself without any help from my hubby! Home Depot is my craft store!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Installation Ok let me start by saying I am a 45 year female, and my daughter (16) and I did this alone. My basement is extremely cold, and this year the weather in NY was extremely harsh, and my pipes kept freezing even with them being wrapped in foam insulation. My basement is complete, and has heat, but it still remains chilly. When the basement was completed the contractor, made closets for the piping and a room where the oil tank is, but he did not insulate any of the closets for the outer wall . The boards are easy to cut, I used a jig saw, which saved the cutting time tremendously. I used Loctite grab adhesive PL 375 heavy duty construction adhesive to hold the panels on the wall. Since the areas I was attempting to insulate are very small, I had to cut the boards in half (across by the width), to make it easy to maneuver. My daughter placed the adhesive on the back of the boards using a glue gun and I just pushed the boards on the wall. I did not need to use cement screws. The product is easy to install and extremely easy to work with, actually it is a one person job. There is little if any clean up, and no itching from the fiberglass once cut, and for those reasons, I gave it 5 stars As for the insulation, I am not sure how good it will work, but I still kept my rating. I also plan on purchasing the door draft guards to place on the bottom of the door, and I am hoping that will make the basement much more cozier than it is now. If I am able to update this review in the winter, I will say whether the chase closets seems to be a little warmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to work with - excellent for both insulation and air sealing I cut this up into small rectangles and sealed around the top of my basement walls, using great stuff around the edges. It has really sealed the area up nice and tight. Now I'm going to use it against the concrete walls of the basement. very easy to cut. Very strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install and works great - but not very straight This stuff rocks! Crazy easy to install and works really well. The only downside is they are not 100% true and don’t align tightly together all the time (tight at the top and bottom but gaps in the middle) “JointSealR” tape worked great for this but hard to find “buyinsulationproductstore” had it, pricy! but works great. The temperature in my basement is almost too warm now and it’s below freezing outside :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tongue and grove - very poor quality I purchased this insulation after using a 2"x2'x8' Dow tongue and grove insulation for 1/2 of my foundation. I needed additional insulation but the company I purchased the Dow insulation from was closed on Sunday. I needed to get the project done so I was happy Home Depot carried the same size insulation but quickly realized that the tongue and groove of the Owens Corning insulation were extremely difficult to joint together compared to the much large tongue and groove of the Dow product. It took me twice as long the put up the Owens Corning insulation because I spent a lot of time trying to get the boards to join...the tongue and groove were terrible and many of the panels just wouldn't align no matter how hard and how carefully I tried. So much for an R value of 10 when I couldnt get the panels to completely join together. I would not purchase this product again. Go with the Dow product that has a much bigger and better tongue and grove. (And it was the same price).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked well for application Applied to 1 x 5 wall facing unfinished attic. Avoided ferring strip etc. Taped the seams so it provided air seal and some insulation.
