Customer Questions & Answers

Bending for tree ring

Can one eight-foot section of this stuff be bent to form a small tree ring for a shrub? Or is it too stiff or fragile for that?
Asked by: peterreb
I bent it using a strap clamp like the movers use to hold stuff in place. I started it with only a partial bend in the shape of a U and tighten the clamp to hold it in place. I then tightened the ratchet on the clamp slowly so that the metal gradually adjust to the curve. I did it in my garage ratchetting it a few inches every 10 -15 min. Through this process I closed the U into an O and tighten it a little more to make sure the metal was holding the bend. At that point the straight piece was pre-shaped into a near circle. I place it around the tree, reattached the strap and tightened it to the point where I could insert the one end into the other. It worked great.

How does the material handle turning corners at a right angle?

Is there a way to reinforce a corner, where the edging needs to turn at a right angle?
Asked by: ck1024
You can bend the metal strip easily using some force, and it is substantial enough to hold the form of a right angle (90 degree) or other variant. I did exactly that for an angle ending and it worked beautifully.

How would I cut this edging?

Is there a good tool to use to cut edging to fit size/length needed?
Asked by: Agatha
I used a vice, hacksaw, metal file. Slide on the cut-end so both ends of the edging-run is "factory finish"

We purchased 4 boxes of this edging for our landscape project and we are totally satisfied. Once you engage one piece with the next by sliding into the slots on the upper and lower edge of each piece, it gets easier and easier. We just took a pick axe and made the curves around the planting beds, about 3 inches deep, curved the pieces and set them with the spikes in the kit. Then we backfilled with dirt and finished with river rock, see pics. We would recommend this system to anyone, it was so easy. We used the bronze color edging.

After a rain the ground was soft, I was able to use a flat shovel to slice the ground open, rock the shovel back & forth to create a "V" . I repeated this procedure for the 24' length. I slipped the edging pieces together and taped them with aluminum duct tape. Then I slipped them into the "V" and tapped them down with a rubber mallet. I was well pleased with the result and I will order some additional sets.

This one seemed better, no worrying about cracking, fading or coming out of the ground like so many I've seen. The connection between each strip has a groove and they slide together, so they can't come apart. Installation was very easy - just dig a channel, connect all of the strips you will need and then hammer them in with the metal spikes provided. Going around curves was easy as well.

My husband is adding more hardscaping to the yard, and he needed something to edge the grass where the new paths and patio were going in. Most of the addition was curvy, so the edging had to be flexible. The EasyFlex did the trick! Installation was easy (especially for me, since I just watched), and it rounded the half-circle and curves just fine. The huge stakes keep it in, and the leftover stakes will come in handy if we get attacked by vampires (I know the stakes aren't real silver, but maybe the vampires won't notice). Next step is concrete, again in a circular shape, so we may experiment with our leftover EasyFlex to see if it will work for that!

I will purchase more for additional landscape work. Hard to find good aluminum edging in black at local landscape providers. Feels substantial and easy to work with. It was a little difficult separating the four strips as they are shipped in a "snapped together" configuration. Also, I found it difficult to snap them back together as I was joining them for placement. Otherwise, product is a breeze work with. As others have noted, it can be bent at 90 degree angles easily, so the end joint products that are sold are unnecessary.

They do a really good job of keeping the grass from growing into my flower beds and look very professional. The work effort to install is minimal but my yard has almost no rocks. Not sure it would be so easy if you have very hard or rocky soil. My one complaint is this; the last box of 4 pieces had 2 pieces that somehow got partially attached in shipment. Normally during installation you insert slightly narrower track into the wider track so that the pieces overlap by 6-8" to keep the line crisp. This time two pieces got wedged together in the middle and it was nearly impossible to pull them apart. I ended up having to bend the railing to separate the pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best edging I have ever used I have used plastic and stone borders before, but this edging does it all. It is recessed in a trench and should prevent grass from creeping through and not move or change shape over time. I would like to add a few tips for the next person that installs it. 1. Wear gloves when sliding the two pieces together. I sliced my thumb when they slid together but was still able to install around a tree.Black electrical tap would work well also. 2. As others suggested, I taped over the spike holes with clear packing tape on both sides. 3. Using the claw end of a hammer to dig the trench worked best. I put the circle around the tree a little larger than the installed size so I could use it as a template to start the first trench at about 1/2" depth and moved the ring to dig deeper. Sliding the overlap joints another inch or so so it fit perfectly in the trench. 4. Used a wonder bar for trenching along a concrete walk way after a good rain worked perfectly to push any rocks or buried debris clear. After laid in the trench, a short 2x4 was used to tap the edging down to the correct level.

Be prepared to put a great amount of work if you need to dig a trench. I found hammer works well to create a narrow trench with right depth and to remove rocks & stones. Due to paint, it is very difficult to push two pieces of aluminum fence into groves. Need two people to connect the aluminum fence, one person holding the two pieces at the joint and the other tapping at the end using some wooden or rubber tool.
