This unit is an exact replacement for an under-the-stair heater over 20 years old. The old one was sold under the VRV Products name. This new one is Smith’s Environmental. Same unit, though.
This product is heavily made. No frills, but no shortcuts, either. The older one lasted 20 or more years. They look identical, so the new one ought to last as well. There’s a handy hi/lo fan switch, but I just leave it on high all the time. It pulls air in from the top and blows heated air out the front. The fan runs quietly and automatically. When your boiler sends hot water to this unit, the fan turns on. If there’s no hot water present, the fan goes off. Simple.
There are no instructions to speak of. Plumbing is easy – two ½ inch copper pipes. They tell you which pipe is the inlet (lower) and which is the outlet (upper). I soldered on copper fittings and used unions to connect to the heating system. You can use PEX, as well, which may be easier. There’s an easy-to-reach bleeder valve for getting air out of the heater after installation. Electric is simple – black wire, white wire and a ground lug. You will need two wire nuts and a standard 3/8 inch through-hole clamp, not supplied with the unit.
It took me about an hour to remove the old heater and install this unit. It worked right away and is heating the space now. I am pleased with this purchase, would recommend it, and happy to have found it at Home Depot.

Got one for our kitchen and it is quiet and warm. It has two fan speeds, normal and turbo. Super easy to install, supply and return and easy wiring hookup. The air vent is easily accessible from the front of the unit. We've had out for a few years now and it it hasn't failed. Not much more to say. Good unit.
