## how many bags will be needed to make up 1&1/2 yards

Not to be a smart-alec, but this question is poorly phrased. "1&1/2 yards" is a distance, along one dimension; the most accurate way to satisfy it would be to line up individual grains of sand along yard-and-a-half-long line! If this is a volume (3 dimensions), it should be expressed in cubic yards, in which case voodoorabbit's answer is correct. If it's just an area (2 dimensions), it should be expressed in square yards AND accompanied by a depth. Let's say your length and width are 1 and 1.5 yards, respectively, which creates an area of (1.5 * 3 feet/yard * 12 inches/foot) * (1 * 3 * 12) = 54 * 36 = 1944 square inches. If we assume a typical sandbox depth of 6 inches, we then have a volume of 1944 * 6 = 11,664 cubic inches. The bag being 0.5 cubic feet means it contains 0.5 * 12 inches/length foot * 12 inches/width foot * 12 inches/ depth foot = 864 cubic inches of sand. Therefore, you need 11,664 / 864 = 13.5 --> 14 bags.

## Is this sand non-toxic?

Most anything is toxic should you ingest or be exposed to it in large enough quantities. While the sand MSDS may show toxicity, it is important to know the amount you must inhale for it to be significant at all. The larger the particles the better, that way you won't inhale smaller particles into your lungs. The most dangerous particles that are commonly out there for us to breathe are those kicked up from the road by cars and float along to be breathed by us as well as those from the combustion of the cars fuel. So, take it all into account and this sand should be fine. Just don't eat too much rocks; meaning big sand.

## Quikrete 50 lb. Play Sand

Is this play sand silica free? It doesn't say so in the specifications, so I'm assuming it is not. But I wanted to confirm. Do you sell silica free sand?
No this sand is not silica free. Silica(silicon dioxide) is what sand is. I wouldn't worry about silica exposure though. Most of the earth's crust is composed of silica, and also most of the upper mantle. Also glass and quartz. If you want silica free sand, maybe go for calcium carbonate, Sodium bicarbonate(baking soda) or salt/ sugar. (Well maybe not salt/sugar) It won't be sand, but it will not contain anything but small impurities and the substance. Also, don't stick your face into silica dust, and silica gel is not toxic, it just adsorbs water (water sticks).

## Customer Reviews

50 lb. Play Sand is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 130.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Full of Rocks Did not notice any rocks in the first ten bags added to my son's sandbox. Bought ten more bags the next day. On the third bag, noticed many large rocks. Dug through the sand added the day before and noticed many small rocks. Returned the unopened 7 bags and part of the bag that had been added. Eventually got more bags and spent 3 hours sifting out the rocks using a sieve. Pictures are worth a thousand words. The last picture is of all the rocks removed and put on a hand towel. Sand was washed off these in the sifter over our lawn. The sand itself is nice and looks and behaves like beach sand when slightly damp.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not like any play sand I've ever seen before My spouse filled the kids sandbox with this stuff while I was away and I was certain he must have bought the wrong thing as it doesn't look anything like typical play sand. It's gray for starters and extremely dusty. And when it gets wet it's dirty/chalky and leaves a residue on everything. It doesn't work for making sand castles and other play molds either because it just turns to mush when wet and sticks to the buckets or molds. We'll be removing this sand and buying something else. Don't waste your money on this product for a sand box.

I was new to the sand requirements for a sandbox and which brand had better quality sand. If youre like me and never thought about cancer causing agents in your sand then welcome to the club. Although some reviews claim this product has the cancer causing agents I still proceeded with purchase (seriously, what doesn't cause cancer) apparently the dust and inhalation of is what can cause it so I sprinkle a little water on top and let them play. Very soft and so far (weeks after purchase and many, many play dates with it) we have not found any foreign objects or rocks, just soft sand. Very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wouldn't consider going elsewhere! Very simply, I'm a pre-school teacher. There are six pre-K classes on our campus. Some of them are special ed. We teachers rotate the responsibility of picking up more sand for our (2) sand tables. When it's my turn to pick up two bags, I order and pay online. Boom! I'm done. A wonderful sales associate transports the bags to my ride, and I can get this back to school on my lunch break. This Wilshire Home Depot is that close to my school. Sand and water play are essential elements of our Creative Curriculum. Thank you, Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good play sand, just like it says I think it's funny, the comments complaining about dusty sand that doesn't build up too well (for sandcastles)...the packaging says to add a bit of water to keep the dust down, and when compared to sand from a beach (which is exactly what it feels like), you have to add water to that sand too, right? Anyway, great value; 3 bags put enough sand in our rectangular sandbox and there weren't any sticks or foreign debris in these 3...
