Rated 4 out of 5 by Decent for VERY SMALL lots; Not for larger lots I gave this mower a 4 star because in general, it is a good mower. Pros: - Nice, even cut - Lithium rechargeable battery instead on NiCd - Batteries can be sufficient for small lots (~ 0.25 acre) - Extremely light. Trust me. It is very light so is very easy to manuevre. - Extremely quiet. Sounds like a medium sized fan. - Of course, no oil/gas Cons (for larger lot) - Batteries last a little over 1 hour, so for a larger lot, you'd need 2 batteries. - Extra battery cost $200, bringing the price of the mower to over $600! At that price, it's better to pony up an extra $300-$400 and buy yourself a riding mower. - Bagger (included) is very small and needs emptying very often, increasing cutting time. - Mulch attachment (included) can only be effectively used on very dry grass. Any type of moist grass gets caught in the attachment and then just releases huge clumps of mulch on the lawn, instead of evenly distributing it. - You can get temporary power loss on tall/thick grass (over 7-8") that will require you to restart. In general, if your lot is small (~0.25 acre) and you don't let your grass grow too tall, I'd recommend this mower. If your lot is larger (> 0.5 acre), I would not recommend this at all. Needless to say, I had a large lot so this did not workout for me. September 7, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Ultralight, Does the Job on Small Yards Let's face it: most suburban houses sit on a tenth of an acre, so the yard is about a twentieth of an acre or less. Every review I have read has failed to mention this. Basically, you just take it out & set the handle & charge for a couple hours (can charge with battery in or out of it). My 1st mow was in Texas winter when the oak leaves & yellowing oak flowers fall (Feb-Mar). Under such conditions, the bag fills up ridiculously fast... so I crank up the height & roll it back to my garden to dump as a mulch (which you can do one handed... lift up the door to see if it's full, or the mower will shut down if it is completely full). On low, one can sort of vacuum up the leaves/flowers from the concrete, which I like better than sweeping, but it won't be as perfect as with a blower.... & it won't pick up the twigs, so you have to do that by hand or rake or broom. It is so light & narrow, it is almost as easy as using a power mower; but without the problem of a discharge extension, so you can go around obstacles either way. (it weighs about 1/2 to 1/3 what gas & lead-battery mowers weigh). You have to set the height of the blade according to the grass conditions: lift up the mower handle as you pull up the height lever. Under normal conditions, my <1/20th acre yard is easy to do twice or more on a charge. Even if you had a 1/2 acre, you could just charge up the battery for an hour or 2, take a break & do the rest. If you believe in living green, as well as easy stress free mowing that you can listen to your music or public radio's Saturday morning eco show; then get this mower & forget about the price! Compared to the price of a yard service, it pays for itself in 6 months! PS> Shipping should be free, if not, complain to HD & they may send you a gift card for the amount..... however, UPS will leave it on your porch where it could be stolen, so you may want to have it shipped to the HD!!! Rated 3 out of 5 by Reinforce mower handle please! I did like this product the 1st 4 uses. The 5th time, the handle broke off at the toothed plastic height adjusters. They are very flimsily attached with a couple tiny screws directly into the plastic. Perhaps if you don't pull up on the handle when you adjust the mower height; or push down on the handle to lift up the front wheels & change direction... then it might not break. Perhaps if they reinforce the handle I will consider buying this product again. But not til then! June 20, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by A great step up from a reel mower I primarily bought this because my 5 yr. old reel mower had difficulty cutting a thicker lawn (which I over-seeded last fall), even after sharpening & re-adjustments to the cutting bar. Now I can cut my lawn easily and evenly throughout, including those long blades of grass that a reel mower will press down, which then avoids the blades. I have a townhouse with ~20x25ft. front & back yards that takes less than a 1/2 hr to mow. I have to charge every 2nd mowering (1 out of 3 LED lights on the battery charge indicator is not enough). I mow every 4-5 days at the highest height setting #6 (2.75in). If the grass gets too long, I have to mulch at half the walking pace to lessen clumps of grass left behind or use the catcher bag. It cuts within the width between the wheels, so it's necessary to overlap & use a trimmer along fences. My grass type is cool season, Kentucky blue/tall fescue mix. At times of frequent rain showers, when grass can have fast growth spurts, this mower handled 6-8in. tall grass with no problems using the catcher bag. I considered the TOp tRaditiOnal battery-powered mower for its reputation and professional quality, but I spent the extra dollars on this Li-ion battery mower because: 1) it's very lightweight - as it's light enough to hang or lift onto a shelf while the car is in the garage during the winter. 2) advanced battery technology - quicker charges & longer battery life than traditional batteries utilizing trickle chargers. I would be happier if this mower had a 4in. max cutting height and a 20in. cutting path. Fortunately, this model must be an improved batch from what I've read from that "world largest online retailer" of the kindle. This mower doesn't have hub caps to have fallen off, the rear flap can't reach the blade when pulling in reverse, and nothing was broken when inspected out of the box. July 14, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Bought on April 12th 2011 Home Depot is great. I buy everything from them. I was hesitant about buying the product because at the time of purchase there were no reviews. I ordered the product and it arrived within 3 days. Box and packaging were great. Battery charged and ready to go. It’s such a cute little thing – very small. I started to get concern when I looked it over. All of plastic construction which might be okay – lighter and easier to get around. Bag catcher tiny, wheels tiny, blade tiny, wheel levers looked fragile too. When I got the mower out of the box, a plastic piece was broken causing the safety kill bar to be off. I didn’t worry much about that as I knew they would ship me another one soon. I was still able to hold the safety lever down and do a quick mow job of the front yard – Just had to try it out. Pretty quiet, wife didn’t even know I was mowing. It does sound like a big fan. Took many more passes of the yard as the old big gas mower. Cut for about 10 minutes and the battery didn’t move from the “full charge” indicator light. When I got to the end of a run I needed to back it up two feet. When I backed up the rubber rock guard at the back of the mower ripped off. So, my summery is that it’s a very fragile machine if you want to mow once or twice a week. Just not tough enough. I returned it at Home Depot and they were great in giving me my money back, even though it was an internet purchase. Hope that helped. April 13, 2011
