Regarding two layers = R30, the answer is actually more complex. The true R value depends on the assembly. Exposed wood and air leaks are two common factors. In a roof with 2 x 8 rafters, for example, you could fill the rafter bays with two layers of ComfortBatt (or other insulation), but if the edges of the rafters are still exposed, this creates a "thermal bridge" because wood is a surprisingly good conductor of heat/cold. Similarly, walls and roofs that are tightly air sealed with a layer of spray foam perform significantly better -- even if other insulation is used for the bulk of the R value.

So look for ways to block every air leak before you install any insulation -- and look for ways to completely isolate any wood that is linked to the exterior, e.g. studs and rafters.
I hope this is helpful.

Answer:
You "could" do it by slicing the thickness in half, but, depending on how large an area you need to work with, it could be a real pain. I don't know if Home Depot carries it, but Roxul does make a product called "Cavity Rock" that is thinner.

Dear Keith: It sounds like Roxul ComfortBoard would be a better solution for you. This board-like version is similar to foam board -- but non-flammable. See: Roxul Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089, which is 1.5" thick, with R6 performance.
I hope this is helpful.

Answer:
No. COMFORTBATT starts at a 3.5" thickness for wood stud dimensions. The only other batt insulation which would be available as a 2" product is AFB which is the commercial version of SAFEnSOUND. This would be available through commercial distributors. Please respond to contactus@roxul.com and we can advise you of local commercial distributor contacts.

For interior wall sound deadening will the 3.5" batts perform better the the 3" batts sold as Roxul Safe'n'Sound?

I also have a 6 inch wall at another location. Will the regular Roxul R23 batts which are 5.5 thick deaden sound better than the 3 inch Safe'n'Sound? Roxul does not advertise sound values.

Answer:
Safe'n'Sound is a product which is merely more dense than Comfortbatt & hence the 1/2" or more air gap does not allow sound propagation by surface to surface contact. Comfortbatt will conduct "some" sound because of contact between two wall surfaces.

Answer:
COMFORTBATT is tested in assemblies for thermal properties and SAFEnSOUND is tested in assemblies for sound properties. Both products are manufactured from the same base materials, Basalt and Slag. Both will give some sound and thermal properties.
3.5" versus 3" may be similar, 5.5" versus 3" in a 2x6. We would expect a better sound result as you will have 2.5" more material in the assembly.

Dear Del: Yes, depending on how your enclosed porch is constructed. If there is a crawl space underneath, for example, you could fill the joist bays with Roxul. Use Simpson insulation wire to hold the batts in place. See: Simpson Strong-Tie Model IS16-R100, Home Depot Internet #100375163 Store SKU #594333 Store SO SKU #592854

It would also be a good idea to cover the joists with a layer of Tuff-R foam board. This will break the 'thermal bridges' created by all of the exposed joists, block moisture from the soil and allow you to air-seal the bottom of the porch. See: Super TUFF-R Model 268426, Home Depot Internet #100322374 Store SKU #804395 Store SO SKU #621947. Seal all of the joints and edges to block air leaks. DAP 230 works well for small gaps, and the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff is good for large gaps and holes.

I hope this is helpful.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I prefer working with Roxul over fiberglass insulation. It's not quite as itchy as fiberglass, but it's not itch free either. I always wear a dust mask working with Roxul, because particles become airborne as you work it into place. It fits snugly in wall captivities where standard stud spacing was used, so it appears to provide better protection against air infiltration than fiberglass. For areas where the insulation needs to be cut, it cuts very easily with a bread knife. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that cutting around electrical boxes and "grooving" for electrical wires is kind of a pain because the material is a bit "crumbly". I especially like the fact that Roxul is fire resistant. Also, I'm sure that people will tell me I'm misinformed, but I don't feel comfortable using foam insulation. I'd be concerned about foam's flammability and its potential for off-gassing. I don't have those concerns with Roxul. October 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by WHY? Would anyone use fiberglass insulation again? Simply put, Roxul is AMAZING! R_15 value, fire resistant, water resistant, mold & mildew resistant, sound barrier, ZERO WASTE and cuts easily with a serrated knife! NO MASK! NO ITCHING! NO STAPLES! NO BRAINER! Insulated a 112 sq/ft wall in 20 minutes! Sure it is a few dollars more than the pink stuff, but if you ever insulated an area with the pink stuff, you know the prep, the aggravation and the clean up. I will never buy the pink stuff again. **TIP** Use a framing square to make straight cuts with a serrated bread knife in a sawing motion. Stack cut pieces. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Make Things Right the 1st Time I WILL NEVER BUY FIBERGLASS INSULATION ANY MORE ! ! ! It may cost more but it has a higher R-value & the installation is SO EASY & FAST, no mask, no gloves, no long sleeves, no stapler, no scissors, no razor knife, just a bread knife & T-square. SO SIMPLE... cut slightly oversize & push in place. September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rock Wool Is So much Better! Purchased a home on the Connecticut Coast built in 1930. Home has no insulation at all. Roxul has a higher R value, better sound proofing and is a great Fire Stop! It is very easy to work with. I found an old bread knife to cut it with and after a very short time got the hang of cutting it! Roxul doesn't have the flying particles and dust like Fiberglass. I find it not to be itchy at all! Once the inside walls were opened up and the Roxul was installed, the sounds from outside greatly diminished. It fits so nice between the studs and stays put where it's placed! Take your time cutting for wires and outlet boxes and you end up with a tight insulation job! The video on their web site helped too! After the Roxul I added 1" Polyiso foam board and then sheet rock to give me an R value of R21! January 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This stuff rocks.. I've used this product in several different applications. It works fine and is much easier to work with than fiberglass insulation. It tears easily to fit into unusual spaces as needed. My only complaint is that it is significantly more expensive than some of the other options. I'm not sure I would use it to do an entire house but for targeted applications, it's great. August 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by excellent Currently in the middle of finishing my basement framing. Ive been limited to working only an hour or two at a time on weekends as the noise is too much for after hours. We have a few ducts that run directly from basement to the 2nd floor that I figured were the noise pollution culprits. I put around 3 layers into the joist cavity completely sealing off the duct run. While it is not sound proof there is a noticable difference. After going through the 3 ducts leading to our room and the babys room, i now have wife approval to work after the kid is in bed. Well worth the money. Im going to be using this in the wall cavity and joists above the entertainment room as well as a few other places. I was really skeptical after doing plenty of research online, but this worked like a charm. Note that my local store didnt carry the safe and sound, but this certainly did the trick. January 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding Product Easy to install and very efficient in terms of limited waste. You will be satisfied, I purchased in bulk and the square foot price beat the competition locally by $0.15 or about 23% August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super easy installation, insulates great Noticed an immediate benefit in the garage where I installed this insulation. It was extremely easy to install as it stays in place once you fit it in between the studs. August 16, 2016
