Will this work for a boat trailer? It will only be in the water when loading and unloading. The trailer has some rust on it right now and I want to clean it off and then coat it.
Asked by: michael
This application should be fine, Michael. Rust-Oleum Professional Cold Galvanizing Compound is for exterior and exterior use. If the trailer is simply in the water for a few minutes at a time, this should pose no problems.

Does it hold up in saltwater

Asked by: 1155
Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Professional Cold Galvanizing Compound is not recommended for applications that are immersed. The product will eventually lose adhesion. If it’s not immersed and directly near salt water, it’ll be just fine. It’s all about frequency and duration. You may need to recoat sooner if the product is constantly exposed.

15 oz. Flat Gray Cold Galvanizing Compound is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME STUFF I've been using this stuff now for a few years. I use it to cover welds on 2" galvanized pipes, fabbed into radio antenna towers. The pipes are close to the beach in a semi-marine environment. Because I nor my customers don't want to pay for such large pieces getting hot dipped galvanized, I use the cold spray approach and save money. Although this cold galvanizing is NOT as tough as true hot dipped galvanized, but who cares? This stuff works so much better than using regular primer coat, followed up by paint. Because this cold galvanizing compound is primarly 93% zinc, I've found that it outlasts all paints and primers. One word of advice however: MAKE SURE YOU SHAKE THE CAN FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES!!! Then continue to shake it in between spray applications. The stuff is really thick with zinc while in the can itself. You really want to mix the zinc well before spraying it on metal surfaces. Just use this stuff like you would a primer coating. Follow up with a top coat if you so desire. I only rated its "value" with 4 stars because like everything, it could be a little less expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORK GREAT IN WATER (anti fouling paint) This works great as an anti-fouling paint on props, shafts, trim tabs and drives. Plus you get the extra zinc protection. Tried it last year and going to get some right now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from decent product I prefer to treat any rust after scale removal with Ospho and spray with this paint after 24 hours and this will last for many years, especially on any farm equipment that is continually in use as in hay balers and combines. Better than hot dip galvanizing and if any wears away, spray some more over that spot, but that happens infrequently. Ospho converts the rust oxide to a calcium based product that does not progress further. I haven`t found anything better. Shake often...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product for general use as long as it is not messed with I buy this Rust-Oleum brand when I cannot buy the more expensive ZRC cold galvanizing compound at a welding shop that has limited hours. This is a better deal for projects that will not be touched by anything like ceilings and high walls since the product does scratch of easily. It gains a little more scratch resistance after it is cured but it does not hold up as well to the ZRC brand as well. I found out about the ZRC brand since I work in industrial construction and that is what the steel workers use for touching up pipe racks and other hot dipped steel. Overall Rust-Oleum should be good for most general applications and if it scratches off just repaint that spot (3 stars for that since the other brand is much more scratch resistant).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not bond with topcoat I worked on new and old (but brushed and sanded clean) flashing and roof vents. It went on easy but cures to a powdery finish. At the advise of the Rustolium Rep who was stocking shelves, and according to the label, I put a top coat on. It was high end latex, just like the label said to use. The top coat did not bond at all. It lasted 1 day and peeled off. It may be impossible to clean this mess up. I may have to buy $200 in new roof vents. I don't complain much but this has set me back several days of very risky and difficult work. I fault rustolium. I would have been better off using auto primer and auto paint instead. This is a mess.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Used on my above ground pool walls that had rust. Applied after removing rust and before putting a new pool liner. Easy to spray onto walls, and looked great. I strongly recommend a mask! Fumes are strong. Use a fan while spraying it so fumes dissipate. All in all a great product !

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This stuff does not work Used this product on previously hot dipped galvanized parts that had minor surface rust. All parts were cleaned of surface rust and oxidized zinc using a stiff wire brush cup in a high speed angle grinder. After wire brushing the parts were wiped down with Xylene and then coated with the product. After 24 hours of drying time the parts looked fine but the coating scraped off every part with the slightest amount of contact. i.e finger nail scratched every surface. Waste of time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scrapes off easily at the slightest touch. Waited 2 hours to touch, scrapes right off easily. I was shocked at how poor this paint was. If it takes longer to touch, it should be specified on the label, which states "dries to touch in 15 minutes" Baloney. Now I will have to wait 24 hours to see if this paint "cures" otherwise, I will have to remove all this paint. Disaster, ruined my day.
