Customer Questions & Answers

Is spray on primer as efficient as tradional paint on primers on metal surfaces?

I'm going to paint a few iron pool gates. I read that spray on primers do not work as well as their traditional counterparts. is that true?
Asked by: Mike
There is a formulation difference in that it comes out thinner than brush on, so you are less likely to have runs (if you do it right with multiple passes) but must use more coats to get the job done and at higher expense since a large % of spray is wasted not hitting the surface at all. I would not use a spray for large areas, like if it takes more than two cans to do a job. Personally I would use a brush on type for iron gates where a cosmetically perfect result is not necessary and harder to see anyway due to the imperfections and angles of the iron, especially if there will be a top color coat over it. Just be sure to put down newspaper or a drop cloth under it to catch drips.

is this red oxide?

Asked by: Anonymous
More or less yes, it is someone's idea of a roughly rust color averaged across a multitude of metals that rust. In other words it won't match anything precisely but hey that's what a top coat is for. Personally I think that's a bit backwards as it would be better to have it not the color of rust, rather very light colored so it is easier to see where the coat is thin and needs more applied.

how much area does one can of rusty metal primer cover

Asked by: Anonymous
People often ask as if a generic answer will work when it depends highly on wind, wastage (overspray) including shape of object, # of coats, etc. Beginners won't do as well as someone practiced at it who should get about two coats on 10 sq ft. of flat, continuous surface. YMMV.

Is this the best choice for undercarriage parts?

Is this the right primer for steel parts that have been wire-wheeled and degreased, but aren't as clean as if they were sanded or media-blasted? For example, brake supports, axle housings, differential housings, etc.
Asked by: Rich
For automotive applications, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Automotive Sandable Primer Spray. This product is durable enough to withstand application to automotive surfaces such as brake supports, and housings. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Automotive-12-oz-Matte-Black-Sandable-Primer-Spray-249418/202097279

Customer Reviews

12 oz. Flat Rusty Metal Spray Primer is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage I found that this primer provided excellent coverage on my project, repainting a set of decorative wire reindeer I have had for years. Even, consistent finish, and the brown color made it easier to find touch-up spots on the existing surface. I was able to apply it with out runs, which is usually a challenge for me. It states 48 hours for complete drying, so plan ahead. Overall, I am satisfied.
