Customer Questions & Answers

Do I need to sandle my table before apply the paint? Any tool you will recommend to use for sandle and what else I need to be aware of?

Asked by: Anonymous
No sanding is needed. My only issue was the top coat. I had problems with streaking. A second coat took care of the problem. Also, you really don't need 3 brushes, all the coatings clean up very easily with soap and water.

How do you get this in different colors?

I only saw one color option available on, but on the Rust-oleum website it mentions that there are 24 color options to tint the bond coat. Is this something that needs to be done at the paint counter, or do you buy the kit in the color you want? I want to use this to update a buffet cabinet.
Asked by: Karen
Home depot or other stores tint the kit to what ever color you want. There are plenty of choices too!

Could I put on a second application of the protective top coat ?

Asked by: Bandit
I called Rustoleum about this as my 1st coat was streaky. They said if you're applying a 2nd coat after more than 24 hours, you need to lightly sand the surface, less than 24 hours no sanding is needed. I did a 2nd coat, looks perfect!

The top of my bedframe looks like a laminated top.

The bed has an old "bookcase" headboard and the top is very shiny and looks like it could be a laminate finish. However, it is "flaking" which was caused by water marks. Will the shiny/laminate surface or the flaking cause any problems with this product adhering to the surface?
Asked by: CJ
Parts of the desk I did were laminate. The coating adhered just fine. Just make sure to scrub it thoroughly with the deglosser and maybe do a little sanding to make sure the surface is smooth.

I started using the Kona color kit, to fix the legs of the leather couch and the chair, both had quite a few scratches on the wooden surface after a few years of use. After realizing how easy the whole process was, I moved on to the bigger project. I decided to re-stain this rather expensive Ethan Allen cabinet and a matching wine cabinet, that no longer matched the colors of the new condo we moved in. I had a lot of fun with the decorative gloss and different techniques of its application, I found on rust-oleum website, and was pretty impressed with the final look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Laminated table top I would highly recommend this product, my table top turned out better than I thought. I picked chocolate as the tint for the bond and added the decorative glaze to make it look more like wood. I painted on glaze and did not wipe any off. It took a little longer to dry, but I love the results I got. It added more dimension to the table. I painted the legs with black paint and the whole thing really pops!

It looks absolutely stunning with a black finish. Used the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation in my bathroom and that, too looks great in Federal Gray. Very pleased.

I happened to see the Furniture Transformations kit at Home Depot and thought "What have I got to lose?" and gave it a try. I followed the steps to the letter and was more and more impressed with the results with each step. It was easy, the coating is kind of a cross between stain and paint (a little thicker coverage than stain but you can still see the grain of the wood). I chose Cabernet as it seemed to be the closest to the dark cherry that the rest of my furniture is. The color is deep and rich, exactly what I wanted. The only problem I had was the top coat. It went on streaky and some spots dried so quickly that I couldn't fix the brush strokes. I called Rustoleum and they advised waiting about 12 hours then adding a second coat. This did the trick, the finish is flawless. The desk looks like a new piece of furniture, not a do-it-yourself project. With the kit and some new hardware, I spent just over $50, considerably less than what a new desk would cost. ****One bit of advice, the Home Depot employee suggested buying 1 good-quality brush rather than the 3 brushes suggested on the box. I'm glad I did, the better brush made application easier and smoother and the color coating and top coat wash out easily with soap and water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much fun!!! This was my first "restoration" and I have to say it turned out great. The directions are easy to follow. I restored an old dresser for my 7 year old daughter. She even helped with the color painting. I stenciled the pics over the paint and then put the top coat over it. There were no smudges or smearing. The smell isn't bad either and was able to do the whole project in the house. I have to say I'm not a fan of the decorative coat as it changed the color (you can see the mirror is darker). As this was for my daughter's room we wanted the brighter color. The top coat dries rather quickly so that was a huge plus. There were also some gouges on the top of the dresser that I did not sand out. They're hardly noticeable after painting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Old Oak Buffet Table The product offers great coverage with minimal prep work, i.e. sanding etc... We chose the black finish. Make sure you get the paint tinted before you leave the store. The woodgrain on the product still comes through the paint and the protective layer offers great protection. We tried applying the glaze step but found it made no difference in the final product. The protective layer gave some gloss to the finish but not as glossy as our stained/polyurethaned dining room table. Overall we are very satisfied with the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny This kit is worth every penny. I redid a dresser and two nightstands with the one kit. I did follow the advise of the other reviewers and got a can of satin finish polyurithain instead of what came in the box. I couldnt be happier and have recommended it to everyone I know.
