Will this grinder work to cut metal?

My question refers to the 4 1/2 in Angle Grinder.
Asked by: George
Very light use only. This thing overheats after a couple of minutes. I consider it useless.

Can i use this to sharpen tools

I'm new to using an angel grinder. Can I use it to sharpen my axe and lawnmower blade?
Asked by: T808
Yes and it works VERY well for that purpose. I use mine to sharpen my ax's, machetes, scythes lawnmower blades etc. I suggest using a flap sanding disk for that purpose.

They were surprised at the store that I didn't take a different accessory in Ryobi's special deal: buy the drill, get a second bare tool for free, but I took the grinder to help cut a stubborn lock off a shed and it worked great. I need to cut some chain link fence and this will allow me to do so without investing in the world's longest extension cord. Nice, fairly light, easy to add a flap disk, cut-off disk or grinder stone and with the built-in spanner, I don't have to go hunting for it. The grinder saved me from getting a locksmith and waiting for hours and made short work of a stainless steel lock.

I replaced the grinding wheel with a rough cut tile cutting wheel, and enlarged the hole in the shower where the on/off/temperature handle comes through the tile. I did this for three showers, and completely drained two batteries. So, IMHO great for short and sweet jobs, but get the 110V one if you intend to do longer jobs. To be completely fair, I have no idea how much power the tile cutting wheel uses vs the regular grinding wheel.

I already had other Ryobi tools and needed an angle grinder to cut through a tile wall for a project. I bought this tool and used the batteries I already had. It cut through the tiled wall with ease and left a clean cut. I used the recommended dust mask and eye protection as it does make a lot of dust. The battery lasted for al 8 cuts without bogging down. I used the One plus lithium battery. I used a Dewalt XP 450x diamond blade for the cuts.

Just like everything else Ryobi currently makes, good build quality, WELL engineered, thoughtfully designed, well balanced, versatile and a great value. I first bought Ryobi tools as badly needed and relatively inexpensive "temporary" replacements right after all of my other tools were destroyed in a fire, that was 15 years ago. I still have most of those very same tools today and they're still going strong. And the ones I don't have, well, I pretty much tortured them and they died not owing me a dime. Needless to say I've been pleasantly surprised by their longevity ESPECIALLY for the money I shelled out. As a professional contractor, I used to laugh at employees who had RYOBI tools. Well in the spirit of full disclosure, I'm not laughing any more! Well done RYOBI! Well done.... and PLEASE.... just stick to your "best tools for the money" business model because it's working! ~E. I came to this page hoping to find an amp rating for this device (which I didn't find), but figured I'd leave a review while I'm here. This grinder is incredible for the price. I wasn't expecting much from Ryobi when I bought my first One+ tool, but they continue to surprise me. At a recent job I needed to cut through 200 linear feet of asphalt, and having forgotten my circular saw, and having no other options, I decided to give this thing a try. It did it. I was only able to cut just shy of 2" deep with it, of course, but it was enough to break the asphalt off, and break it off clean. I managed this job on 5, 4ah batteries. The lithium+ batteries make all the difference... the black batteries that come with some of these tools aren't worth powering more than their flashlights. Over the 200 feet of slicing through asphalt, the grinder got HOT... real hot... and I FULLY expected it to burn out at any minute, yet it never did; in fact, it still works as well as the day I bought it. Great tool.

I am a contractor and do not expect a cordless grinder to compete with corded or professional cordless model. When using this with a fully charged 4ah battery it will not cut through 14ga thin wall mild steel tubing using a thin 1/16" cutoff disk. You cannot cut through without the tool switching off mid cut ,even when using nearly no pressure on the tool. The tool doesn't bog down it just cuts the current to the motor as if it has an internal current protect feature. This is on the first cut. I bought this tool to have in the truck to cut 20' stock in half when I need one or two pieces of steel from the stock yard and don't want to bring a trailer. Ryobi is letting me down with it's recent line of lesser duty tools. Got a 5 tool combo kit at Christmas that all the tools were all toy grade not like the Ryobi drills and saws-all that I purchased individually. I switched to Ryobi when Hitachi started doing the same thing with its 18v line. I hope this is not the case with Ryobi. The reviews I read before purchase are in no way accurate. I think most of the positive reviewers are using this tool in a sanding/ polishing and surfacing operations.

I bought this grinder because I had some baseboards to cut and install at my fathers house. I went with the battery powered version because I have a bunch of the big Ryobi batteries already. This grinder is a little less powerful than the corded version but works great! I was able to easily cut through the baseboards with no hassle. It never felt like it was bogging down as long as you let the grinder take the lead and do the work. Don't force it. Nice clean cuts and the tool in the handle was a real bonus. Also, it was very easy to remove the handle and guard if needed. I'm happy to have added this to my Ryobi collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Getting a bad rap by some I didn't read through the reviews when I purchased this, it was more of an impulse buy when at the store. When I gave it a try cutting through pavers I thought it was defective, as the new 2.0 amp batteries I had were both dead after very very limited use. I picked up a 4.0 amp P108 battery and this grinder is AWESOME. I've made plenty of cuts without issue. As with any grinder don't try and force it to work faster than it should by applying excess pressure as that will shorten battery use time and cause it to get hot. On a side note: Wear Goggles when using, don't be a Cowboy. At first I wore safety glasses and still managed to get a small but quite painful piece of stone in my eye. Goggles are a must.
