In the year 2017, it is insulting that ryobi chose to use lead acid batteries instead of long lasting, safe, lithium phosphates(lifepo4).( 3 year life vs 10+ years.) I would have paid $800 more for lithium. Heck i even used lithium on my last ebike, why cant $ryobi$?
Asked by: Justin
This mower is intended for homeowners who may use it 20-40 times per year. If properly maintained (kept charged) the SLAs should last at least 5 years, possibly 8+. SLA are typically given ~300 cycles before no good. This lifespan fits really well for the mower. The lithium would have added a lot more to the price for essentially no benefit to the homeowner consumer. I run an all electric mowing business, and have been working with all types of batteries for years. I wish Ryobi would come out with a ~32" walk behind battery mower. That is the gap that needs filling now. I will have my eye out for a used one of these 38" tractors, perhaps with a neglected battery. With a good lithium battery it could have potential for me. Even just the mower deck I'd love to have. But at $2500, sure beats the $9-12,000 MeanGreens.

With nothing to synchronize the blades (separate motors) how do they overlap without hitting? Do they not overlap? If so, how does it not leave a seem of uncut grass down the middle of each pass?
Asked by: John
no mower has synchronized blades, gas mower's blades are ran from a v-belt, not a timing belt

Asked by: Lawnguy
Yes they do. I broke a wheel when I bumped into a cement block. Cement beat plastic. If you ever need parts, this is the email I received. Thank you for your purchase of a Ryobi lawn and garden product, and we are proud that you have chosen Ryobi for your lawn and garden needs. Ryobi lawn and garden product replacement parts and their pricing can be obtained through the Ryobi master parts distributor at, 1-877-545-4110. Hi, I bought my RM480e two weeks ago, used it twice and love it. However, the parking brake on my unit does not work. The brake itself works fine but not the parking handle. It probably needs an adjustment. Where are the instructions for adjusting the parking brake?
Asked by: Lloyd
You really have to fully depress the brake pedal then lift the parking lever. Its on a cable that goes to the rear brakes. There is a nut adjustment, but id be careful as tightening that too much will cause the brakes to rub and wear out.

I bought EGO Battery powered Lawnmower, Leaf Blower & Weed Trimmer a few years ago. ( From Home Depot ) Love them. My old riding lawnmower was giving me problems & was waiting for the parts to come in. While walking through Home Depot saw this Mower. Dreams do come true! 2 hour run time. 38 inch cut. Perfect big boy toy. 2 weeks later I was the proud owner of this bad boy. It's been 3 weeks now. We have a soccer field in the neighborhood so my first test was to cut this. It is 2 blocks away. While silently driving there a few folks stopped & stared & laughed at my machine. They were surprised there was no noise & seeing a battery operated riding lawnmower was a pleasant surprise. Cutting the field this thing, like my Prius, does what it was design to do. It buzzed along cutting grass ( mulch ) and never had any issues. I have used it several times now & I am very happy. Turns out the cruise control works great & have used more than I thought I would. The head lights are very bright. The button to cut in reverse comes in handy. I am cutting my yard & both yards on either side of me. It was more than I wanted to pay, but well worth the very low maintenance. Not to gas or oil or belts any longer is great. You can read reviews on this wonderful machine & find out about the batteries. The author mentioned it uses the same batteries a wheel chair does. They should last 7 to 8 years. He said charge to full after every use along with other good information. Run don't walk to get this bad boy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sick of gasoline. I'm sick of gasoline engines that don't start or run properly. It's 2017, one would think this problem would have been solved by now. Not so. Small engineer bed are getting a little cheaper, but NOT better. So I narrowed my choices to a Toro ZTR with a 42" deck, or this mower, 4" shorter. I think I made a good choice, although this machine is not without a few issues. The good: - it will ALWAYS START. Quietly. Quickly. - it will not take much space in my garage. - it does not smell like gasoline. - there are no Jerry cans of gasoline around. The bad: - I couldn't get the larger batteries (lead acid) for an extra $200. - the emergency brake operation is a mystery. The ugly: - my jacket and pants get caught on the lever that raises and lowers the blades. - the grass thrower attachment has no hook to raise it (I use a bungy cord) Other than these items, the main problem I'm having is that the lawn is getting mowed 3 times per week because my grandkids love it. Today I used it to pull a spreader and did my whole acre in about 15 minutes. That was after driving it about with my Ryobi electric sprayer and hitting all the weeds with roundup. Yes, the neighbors have been watching this with glee. These batteries are just going to get better. Bye bye gas-powered everything.

I love pretty much everything about the mower - it's fast, well built, great turning radius, lots of thoughtful features, and who can't love that lime green color! I recently spent a day mowing our lawn and hauling rocks, dirt and brush in a trailer I bought for it and it does a great job all around. The only issue I have with it is the accelerator -there's a lag when you press it and then it kind of ramps up to speed. Once it's going, it's very responsive. Also it seems to not work if you have the brake pressed at all, which makes starting on a hill exciting. Overall I'm very happy with it.

I look forward to the reduced maintenance. It is a bit snug for my 6'1" frame, especially getting on and off. It is very quiet even when cutting which is a very nice feature. Powerful enough to get my .55 acres cut without concern. Very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RM480e - Impressive mower, right for the times! I received my mower last month. I am so impressed with the cut quality of this mower. I took about two hours with the unpacking and assembly of the mower. Really simple operations, but then I was working alone. Read the manual, charged the batteries overnight and was cutting grass the next day. I have cut with the side discharge chute and with the mulching guard. The mower performs excellently using either one. I am the owner of another major brand of gas engine riding mower, in comparison with it the Ryobi RM480e comes out way ahead. I like the nimble steering, the quietness, and the lack of engine heat that I have to contend with when using my other mower. Cut quality is comparable, with really no discernible difference in the quality of the cut. The pure enjoyment of not having the noise, heat and difficult steering is great. After mowing the lawn, I used my Ryobi blower to clean up the mower, it was a cinch. I let a neighbor try out the mower too! He was equally impressed with how quiet the mower is compared to gas mowers and with the cut quality and nimbleness of the RM480e. He is a younger tech oriented guy and he loved it, said it is the wave of the future in lawn care. I have to agree. Definitely a Homerun for Ryobi, and home owners that do their own lawn care! I've owned several over the years and just not impressed. I do, however, own the 40 volt weed eater and absolutely love it. With that said, I was very skeptical about this mower. I read the reviews and was impressed enough to go to my local store and test it out. Like other reviewers have said, the accelerator takes a bit to get used to. The ride is rougher than my other brand green mower. This thing tackled everything I could throw at it. Hills, valleys you name it, it went. I will say that it does not particularly like to start on moderate hills. Even with gentle accelerator, the read wheels would spin. Weighing in at 500+ pounds, this kind of surprised me. If I was moving before starting up the hill, it was fine. Goes like screaming banshee on the downhill side. This was a surprise to me since my old mower was uniform going up and down. After mowing better than an acre, uphill and down , the battery meter never moved off of full. This was after an over hour of mowing. I had to knock it down one star for the inability to start on a hill to be fair, the hill is just over 12 degrees) and a quality control issue. The steering wheel is rotated slightly from center with the wheels centered. An easy fix, but still kind of weird (this wasn't the unit I tested and was already uncrated). There was moisture under the battery meter glass. I attribute this to the store keeping the unit outside on display. Would I recommend this unit? Wholeheartedly, YES! Next step is to turn the crate into a trailer (luckily they still had it.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This mower makes mowing fun again! Getting older, hated lugging gas cans around and the 24 HP twin cylinder engine sitting over the top of the front steering axle on my Craftsman lawn tractor was getting heavy, and the constant maintenance was becoming difficult for me. I bought this new Ryobi rider sight unseen, and after using it four times, ...well, let's say, I'm really impressed. I complete my almost 1/2 acre and the battery gauge still reads "full." It took a few minutes to remember this mower does not have hydrostatic braking like my previous mower, but the brakes on this unit work easily on downhill slopes. This rider has more than adequate mower and drive power, all at a quiet noise level. I haven't tried the mulching plug yet because the standard set-up seems to cut the grass in small enough particles. This new model is well built and comfortable to operate. So far, I'm happy with this purchase. I never would have predicted that I would own an all electric mower, but I now own one...and just might try using the USB outlet the next time I mow!

I recommend this upgrade. Pros: I used it 3 times now for up to 2 hours straight each time on a non-flat acre, and it seems it could go 5+ hours before requiring a charge. It can be fast, it is definitely quiet with the blades off, mows in reverse, has a tight turning radius, feels good, fits in my 2-car garage with 2 large cars in it. Cons: These are details to me but to mention. The parking brake does not function (I use a wood block). At first, I could not mount the seat as described in the manual (I had to pull the seat back first). The mower was delivered on a metal crate sitting on top of a wood palette (ask the delivery person to offload from the palette too). The ride can be smoother (perhaps needs better damping, or the seat needs more comfort). The USB cover broke at the hinge (flimsy plastic).
