Customer Questions & Answers

Can this grinder be used to cut?

I bought this grinder to basically cut stone, tile and wood. The instructions specifically state that it should not used be used to cut...it should be used to grind and sand. Yet, the reviews state that it was utilized to cut. Please advise.
Asked by: mef3kids
you need to make sure you use a type 27 wheel. This has a convex center. A type 1 like a diamond masonry blade or the one that HD shows as "bought with this product" (type 1 cut-off wheel) which is flat, CAN NOT be used.

whats in the box

Does this come with a "flange" and "flange nut" so that you can use a thin cut off wheel (type 1)?
Asked by: bob

Why does the body of the grinder get so hot. Using for polished for 18 wheeler. 10 minutes out of the box, n I can't hol

It.
Asked by: jason
because its a grinder not a polisher rpm on grinder is higher than on a polisher and not only should it get hot but could burn your paint , you need a polisher for polishing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great grinder I use a Makita grinder in my job as a granite/Cambia installer. I bought this Ryobi last weekend, to replace a cheap Harbor Freight model that failed after one blade change. Bought this Ryobi at HD after reading the positive reviews. Used it to cut cement retaining wall blocks to notch around tree roots. It was light, easy to handle, minimal vibration. I wore down about 3/8" off a diamond grinder blade and this thing never missed a beat. Highly recommend. One review said that there wasn't a spanner (wrench)--it's stored inside the screw-on handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice angle grinder but wrong size shown very nice angle grinder and i like the Ryobi quality and price but the information shown is misleading. It shows the discs to be used as 4 1/2 inch and the arbor size is shown as 5/8 inch on the box. The thread itself is 5/8" but there is a shoulder that the disc mounts on and that is 7/8" diameter. The grinder disc included with the grinder is 4 1/2" X 7/8" but obviously you dont get that info until you unpack the grinder and see what they have included. . Going by the info on the box i bought the 4 1/2" X 5/8" in the store only to have to go back and return them and get the 4 1/2" X 7/8". So the disc's that you need to buy for this is 4 1/2" X 7/8" Even in the operators manual it lists "Wheel size 4 1/2", Arbor size 5/8 in. X 11 UNC" with no mention that the wheel needed is 4 1/2" X 7/8". Ryobi should revise their info shown to be clear or if a 5/8" is mounted and is attempted to be used it could result in an accident since the 5/8" wheel my fit on the arbor and i could tighten the nut to hold it in place but it does not center itself properly so the wheel spins off center.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grinder at a Great Price. I purchased this angle grinder in February for a specific job - undercutting my brick fireplace to install laminate flooring. I selected this not only because I had recently gotten other Ryobi tools and, it was a good price point. The angle grinder worked great and I am very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from For grinding and sanding only, NOT cutting I really like the ergonomics of this tool, with the rotating handle, trigger instead of slide switch, lever-adjusted blade guard, and 3-position side handle. Easy to configure to fit the job. But 2 big negatives. Not designed for a cut-off wheel. The manual clearly states "This product is only designed for grinding and sanding" and "Never attach a wood cutting or carving blade." Isn't cutting a core function of an angle grinder? The Ryobi people don't deny this in the Product Q&A. Also, you can only use "Type 27" depressed center wheels -- "Never attach a Type 1 (flat) straight or cut-off wheel." This severely limits the selection of available wheels. Neither limitation is listed on the package, so you don't find out until you bring it home and read the manual.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cut through the all thread One thing I wish was shared with me when I bought, is there are different types of cutting disk. The salesperson showed me a type 1 flat blade. However, this one takes a 27 convex disc. This is the first time using an angle grinder. It was easy to figure out. I was also surprised to see the disc was pretty floppy when installed. However, once I applied power it spun fine and cut fine. If you start applying too much pressure you will hear the difference of the blade being stopped. I simply backed off the pressure, allowed the blade to speed up again, and finished the cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool for the price Great grinder for the price. The guy who gave it 1 star because it doesn't work with cutoff wheels is incorrect. I just used it with a cutoff wheel. I think he bought the wrong wheel. You do have to flip the nut over too. He also managed to bend the wrench which likely means he was over tightening it. It only needs to be snug.
