Does this tool self level wood or does it simply shave wood off evenly? I don't really understand how it works
Asked by: Christian
No, the tool does not self level wood. It will cut the wood to a desired thickness while creating perfectly parallel surfaces, if used correctly. It will not remove warpage from a board, but it will remove cupping and create a smooth flat surface that can be mated. The leveling aspect comes from the operators skill level in using the tool, how straight the wood is and how straight the work surface is.

Can this type of planer be used for surfacing areas larger than 3 ½" using multiple passes?

Asked by: Csd
Yes it can, depending on the operators skill level in using the tool.

Is there a replacement for free when it burns up?

Asked by: Dusty
If the tool fails while under warranty, I believe Home Depot reserves the right to either have the tool repaired, or to out right replace it. Don't expect either 10 years later, though.

A few months ago I purchased Ryobi cordless products and discovered the battery packs would fit my old blue Ryobi tools. After spending most of my life in engineering, I would like congratulate the company for a job well done. Actually I gave all my (other brand) tools to a friend and now use all Ryobi. I am very pleased with the quality of the hand planer, and other tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a trooper Bought this because I'm building a deck. Needed it first to level out some joists that were standing taller than others. Worked great for that, even when I ran it over some small finish nails I'd been using to hold string. It continued to work great for evening out ends of joists, bevelling corners, easing edges. I'm surprised how much I've used it so far, and it hasn't complained. Chewed through 3 inch wide sections of composite deck board at the full 1/8" depth of cut with little complaint. Only issue is the chip ejection port can clog up if you are taking off too much material and/or feeding too fast. Pulling the planer off the work piece and flipping the little ejection gate back and forth a couple times fixes that easily. It's really nice to be able to divert chips to either side of the tool too. Overall, this thing has handled a lot already, including being thrown all over the place during the construction project, and has done everything without issue. Solid purchase.

At first, this product seemed to work, but it had virtually no dust/chip collection no matter what I tried. Some have tried to connect a vac on the outlet ports, but I found debris was forced down by the blades on that section beyond the door. A more serious problem was that with the guide fence or the blade mount caused the planner to cut the door edge at ~95 degrees instead of 90 degrees. So I have returned the product and will try the Bosch.

I especially like the fact that it is lighter weight then my old Craftsman, that is less then 5 years old and which parts are no longer available. Does the same quality job as my old Craftsman, but at about 1/2 the cost. Makes smooth, even cuts. For convenience, the cut could be a bit wider. I guess I'll have to wait 5 years to see if repair parts are still available to be able to comment on that.

I wish I had bought one years ago. After using it for about an hour it was covered with wood chips and dust. I spent one minute blowing out the cutter head and outer surfaces and put it in its satchel on my bench alongside my other Ryobi tools. A great buy! It exceeded all my expectations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cannot buy replacement blades I bought this planer about a year ago works great have been pleased with it until now. I have used it enought that the blades are dull and need replacing. Home depot sell the tool but does not sell replacement blades and I have discovered that I cannot buy replacement blades in Canada. The tool is now only good for the garbage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ryobi hand planer Tools works as designed the dust bag works fairly well too bad the outlet won't except a Standard vacuum attachment the kickstand seems to be a little stiff can cause it to bind and cut unevenly otherwise it is extremely well-made tool controls are placed well and tool is easy to use
