Can it be used as a regular hand-held chainsaw for close cutting without the pole extensions attached ?

Asked by: wannasaw
Only the middle 3 foot extension is optional to remove. Otherwise you always have the 5 foot plus pole between the trigger grip and the cutting chain.

There is one issue, and a word of caution - be very careful with the screw on the blade cover housing. This is a really poor design, they have this screw going into plastic, not very durable and prone to strip if you're not careful. It will strip out the plastic it fastens to very easily if you're not careful. Do not over-tighten this screw!!!! This is why I gave the product three stars, otherwise I would have given it 4 or 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good tool For the home owner this is as simple as it gets. I got it out of the box and was really amazed at what it would do. Of coarse you are not going to cut a large tree down with it but for what I need it works very well. I need it to top out trees and to cut low hanging branches so I can ride a mower under trees. Most of my tools are Ryobi so I have extra batteries. Although I did my whole place on a single battery. Plus you don't have to mess with extension cords or gas. The bottom line is that I would recommend this product. In fact you really can't go wrong with Ryobi in general. They have out performed some of the Makita and Dewalt tools I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I purchased this for my husband as a gift. We have an arbor and bougainvillea in our yard that are difficult to trim. Before he got this he had to rotate back and forth between a trimmer and chainsaw to trim them, depending on the thickness of the branches. Now he uses just this one tool. It works well on thin and thick branches. Plus, he doesn't have to use a ladder and get poked in the face by branches. He's very happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very good value Assembly was accomplished easily and quickly. Cut through both hardwood and fibrous palm fronds with ease.More power than I expected for an 18V chain type saw, but maybe I should not have been surprised because I have almost all the Ryobi 18V tools. I am extremely happy with the saw. Well worth the money. As with all chain saws remove bar and chain oil after use and cover the storage surface---there will be a little leakage.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Decent saw but let down by design flaws Let me start by saying I am a huge Ryobi fan - I have a ton of their tools and this is probably the first I would write a critical review about. My biggest issue with this saw is the design on the chain tensioner. Most modern saws have quick adjustments for chain tension that don't require tools. Not so here - an (included) double ended allen wrench is required, first to loosen the bar, then to adjust tension with the other end, then tighten bar again. First problem - no on-board storage for said tool. Second problem - chain stretches a lot, requiring frequent adjustments. Third problem - and the worst - the tension adjustment is set by a small recessed allen head screw, and the recess quickly plugs with sawdust and oil. GRRRRR! Also, the saw leaks oil if placed in any position other than dead vertical, and the pole is super unsteady when the extension is used.Three strikes and yer out.. Cuts well, 18V L-I battery has plenty of power, but unless you are looking to cut one or two branches a day I'd stay away!

Cons: it is head heavy, and the chain loosens quickly. I am considering replacing the allen cap set bolt with a wing nut topped set bolt so I can tighten the chain quickly without the allen wrench.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw Ryobi did a nice job with this saw. One charge will last for alot of trimming. It works very nice on branches up to about 4" dia. I should have bought one yrs ago.
