Can it be used as a regular hand-held chainsaw for close cutting without the pole extensions attached ?

Asked by: wannasaw
You have to have at least two sections connected so the saw will be about 6 feet long. It is not too bad cutting close, but not as easy as a regular hand held saw.

There is one issue, and a word of caution - be very careful with the screw on the blade cover housing. This is a really poor design, they have this screw going into plastic, not very durable and prone to strip if you're not careful. It will strip out the plastic it fastens to very easily if you're not careful. Do not over-tighten this screw!!!! This is why I gave the product three stars, otherwise I would have given it 4 or 5.

It did drip oil a little though. It was easy to switch from a 2-section saw to a 3-section saw. It cut quite a lot of limbs before I had to switch batteries. Tried to use a neighbor's older electric pole saw but the Ryobi was much lighter. Depending on what you are cutting and what kind of shape you are in, your arms can get tired, to resting helps. I even used it to cut up the larger limbs once they were on the ground.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I purchased this for my husband as a gift. We have an arbor and bougainvillea in our yard that are difficult to trim. Before he got this he had to rotate back and forth between a trimmer and chainsaw to trim them, depending on the thickness of the branches. Now he uses just this one tool. It works well on thin and thick branches. Plus, he doesn't have to use a ladder and get poked in the face by branches. He's very happy with it.

I have fruit trees that were supposed to be dwarf but had grown too big to prune with lopping shears. This pole saw went together simply by sliding the poles together and hand tightening. With this pole saw I was able to tame the beasts. It is very easy to use and if you don't need the full length just remove one section. Grandpa has his eye on this one so I'll have to watch out that it doesn't wind up at his house.

Cut a few branches...mostly 2-4 inches in diameter and it did it with ease. It gets heavy lifting the whole thing up to reach branches above 10 feet and the shoulder strap at this point doesn't give any support. The pole saw seems sturdy and I hope it would last like my other Ryobi tools.

Initially purchased it for future spring tree trimming, but the windstorm changed that. Used it to cut up the smaller limbs of a fallen maple tree, was very handy for getting at the hard to reach limbs. Had about an hour run time on a fully charged battery, was very pleased with that. Had enough power to cut 4" limbs easily.
