Customer Questions & Answers

Where can I get it?

Your web-page says this product is not available in my local north Raleigh, NC store or any other Home Depot within a hundred miles. I think a few bags of either Quikrete or Sakrete cold blacktop repair would do the job for me. The price (around $12 or $14 per 50# bag) sounds reasonable but I don't want to spend a fortune having it shipped in from afar. Why isn't it stocked here? Can you order me some for store pickup without a shipping charge?

Can this product be used to level sunken areas or holes where there is no broken pavement?

Asked by: Sinchu
Yes, I have used US cold patch over the last several years on multiple cracked areas of driveway as well as to even out depressions and it has worked very well for me. After a couple months you can even use driveway sealer on it. I actually like the product very much for this purpose.

How long does Cold Patch take to harden?

I used cold patch to cover an area 2' x 20'. In hindsight, I probably should have used hot asphalt to save $. I used a tamper and water filled roller to compact it. I have it down 2 days now and it's still somewhat loose. How long does it take to harden?
Asked by: Jack
US Cold Patch hardens as it is tamped and therefore compacted. The base under US Cold Patch has to be sound, that is, hard.

How much do I need?

We have a crack to patch that is 50 feet long, 2 inches deep and 2 inches wide. How many 50 lbs bags do I need?
Asked by: DeeJoli
The U.S. Cold Patch cannot be used for this type of repair. The maximum length of your repair can only be 3' x 3' in either direction. This span is too great and the material will displace and not compact properly. You should use a hot patch for this repair.

Customer Reviews

50 lb. U.S. Cold Patch is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems bad at first but then... I had a lot to patch so I tried 3 different brands. While I was using them, this one seemed to be the poorest quality. One month later, I think it has made the best patch. There was another kind I had used in the past that was easy to set and made just as good of a patch. Of the three that I could find at the hardware stores on this specific occasion, this one was the best. The fine sand and granules stuck to my tamper. Pro tip: just drive over it several times to set it like in the video of the product page. I didn't trust the patch at first so I would aim for it everytime I roll into my driveway. Maybe that helped.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Complete fail The product was dry and loose, with a consistency varying between large gravel and fine sand. The worker I hired to install this product watched an instructional video with me and followed the instructions on the bag to the letter, applying 8 bags of product to a 3 inch deep squared-off hole in 3 lifts, tamping firmly between applications, and finishing it off by driving my car over the entire area twice (10 passes). Other reviewers noted that the product stuck to the tamper when applying. Unfortunately, this didn't happen in my case. The product didn't stick to the tamper, the existing asphalt to which it was applied, or itself. There was no adherence, even after a week. I called the manufacturer to get approval to return the product for a refund, called back my worker to dig it up and rebag it, called Home Depot Customer Service to ensure the return was approved, and went back to the store for a refund. A clerk at the returns desk fussed that the product wasn't presentable for resale, but grudgingly issued the refund when I told him I was told to return it for refund because it was defective. Of course there was no refund for my worker's labor. I've had no trouble with competing brands of cold patch asphalt, as long as the product is still "fluid" in the bag. This product was still soft in the bag, so there was no way to tell by feel if it was old, and there was no date stamp on the bag. Since the reviews on this product are inconsistent, do yourself a favor and buy a single test bag first if you're considering paying more for its touted superior quality and environmental benefit. And note that in case of failure, refund or replacement is at the manufacturer's discretion, per the warranty printed on the back of the bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Consistent With Product Description Have been using "do it yourself" driveway maintenance products for nearly 30 years. My job required 12 sacks (50 lb. wt.) of U.S. Cold Patch. Use this one according to directions: clean the receiving surface, open the plastic bag, spread well with the flat side of a bow rake (feathering out the edges), I started the compaction with a hand held plate tamper (watch out for material sticking to the plate surface, clean by scraping with the flat side of the bow rake), I rolled over the asphalt with the driver side front tire of my SUV 1-2 times with a helper guiding me from curbside. For you asphalt paving aficionados, you can refine your job by fine feathering the edges with Latexite Trowel Patch and sealing the whole job (I would wait at least 1 month) with a quality driverway sealer. Hope this was helpful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work! I used this product to patch some large cracks in my driveway. I carefully prepped the cracks, removed plants and soil, filled with sand, then packed this stuff in. I pounded it in tight according to directions. Once we drove cars over it, loose stones started coming out. I did the job during the summer. The following spring, the cracks had so many weeds sprouting it looked like I planted a garden in the cracks instead of using this product. Quite simply, it did not work and was a huge waste of a couple of hot, exhausting days of work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well This stuff works great for me. I've had to make numerous smaller patches and cracks of 1-inch size in asphalt. I clean them thoroughly and tamp the material in well until it's just above level, then use the flat side of a sledge to compact it. This has worked well for me. This finishes in a really black color which stands out against the weathered gray of my blacktop, but I don't mind. You may need to find ways to color it after the fact to blend better. One thing to consider is that this stuff is made somewhat locally, so the quality can vary between manufacturers (note on the bag that the product names are licensed). The company that makes it here (Sakrete) is very good in general and this product has never disappointed for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money I don't know if I got an old batch of the bags. But when I put some in the hole was like putting down rocks and dirt. No consistency at all. Do not compact at all. Taking the other bags back right now

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Poor Product - Else I got a bad unit I purchased the 50 lb. U.S. Cold Patch to fill some depressions on my asphalt surfaced drive way last summer. A very dissappointing experience. The summary is that, the product (black stones) will not bond together. The loose stones came apart in a few days. The product looked liked stones just painted with black paint. Poor adhesion/bonding. Sometimes I wonder if Home Depot quality tests some of these products before selling them. Could be a I got a defective product. BTW, I read and as per the instructions on a warm 70% week in MD.
