Questions & Answers

can you use it for top dressing the lawn ?

Asked by: allen
Yes, combine with grass seed and your results will be excellent. Key is to keep lawn watered twice a day till seeds sprout. Depends on weather.

What is the difference between this and basic "top soil"? Is the difference just the starter fertilizer?

Asked by: AFMLEHI
My landscaping friends up north say to use nothing but LOAM. Especially down here where the soil is basically sand. Now mostly all Fla plants can and will grow in the soils here but does alot better when the native soil here is treated with a fertilizer such as Black Cow which I've had alot of success with. The "topsoil" here is basically mulch ground up with leaves and ither debris including....SAND. I usually take a large tub and mix a couple bagd of loam with a half or full bag of Black Cow, mixing the coated grass seed in the mixture. Once spread out, I'll usually add more seed atop of the layed out mixture and then coverin that with a thin layer of loam. As everyone will tell you while planting grass seed, water, water, water!!! I found , ya cant use TOO MUCH seed. Rhe nore you use, the thicker it'll come in. Hope this was helpful, good luck all!

Soil should be mixture of sand and/or clay with organic materials. Further, good quality top soil should be screened to prevent large particles (e.g. rocks, twigs, etc.) from making it into the mix. This "lawn soil" appears to be about 60% mulch, 30% compost, and 10% moss. This is not soil according to any definition I can find. Please find a local contractor and buy real screened top soil. It is inexpensive if you buy in bulk (far less pricey than this product) and is real soil. On a side note and to be fair to this product, I did look at several other brands of in store bagged "top soil". They were all similar to this product but actually worse in most cases (i.e. 70%+ poorly shredded mulch).

I purchased two bags of this Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil before reading any reviews and what a mistake. Upon spreading the contents of the bags on my lawn to repair bald areas and low spots it was alarming to see how much "debris" was in the lawn soil. The bags were populated with large twigs/sticks and chunks of wood that resemble a mulch conglomerate of soil. My expectation was a rich soil mixture that would blend seamlessly with my existing lawn. Save your money and just purchase simple bags of screened topsoil for about ONE-FIFTH the price. Simply stated, $7 for a 50 pound bag of this inferior Scotts product is a RIP-OFF!

Glass pieces and wood chips, total garbage and Home Depot should pull this product. If a product is all 'composted forest material', which is what Scotts reply seems to be to all the complaints , then this is a misleading product at best. I've found 3 glass pieces mixed into this 'soil'. The first ones I thought were a coincidence, but after 3, it's in the soil. And as other reviews have stated, this is predominantly wood chips. Unbelievable. Going to contact Home Depot and Scotts and demand a refund.

This product contained way too much bark and small stones which plays havoc on my Scott's push mower. Purchased 12 bags to fill in after thatching and overseeding with Scotts grass seed. Disappointed with results. I usually trust Scotts products but the LawnSoil does not live up to Scotts reputation.

I read the reviews on this product before purchasing and thought many were over-dramatizing about the wood chips found in this and learned that they were not. In my opinion this was more like a bag of mulch with some dirt added. I am in the 4th week of growing my lawn out and I'm probably going to have to get out the leaf blower to get rid of all these excessively sized wood chips all over my lawn. I personally feel that had I used a cheaper basic lawn soil without all of the wood chips my lawn would be fully grown out by now.

I went to HD to get some peat moss but they didn't have any, and I saw this product. The bag sure advertises a great "your lawn will be AWESOME" products. Not the case. I normally take negative reviews with a grain of salt, but the negative reviews of this product are spot on. This is NOT "Lawn Soil"... this is "Mulch with some junk in it". I could not believe how much wood was in each bag. I really should have stopped as soon as I opened the first bag, but I wanted to get my overseeding done so I used 4 bags for my back lawn. It looks like I mulched it... really. I will have to see if the seed actually grows, but overall I would absolutely NOT recommend this product. Scotts should be ashamed. And of course if my seed doesn't grow, I'm sure neither HD or Scotts will replace that.

Seed is doing as poorly in this mixture as the seed that landed in "local soil" . Try something other than this ! If there was a way to return this, I would!
