I have a tiled surround shower that was just put in. The guy didn't know what he was doing and grouted the corners of the shower. I already saw some cracking so I have cut out most of the grout, at least an 1/8 with a grout hand blade, some spots are 1/4". The empty spots he didn't grout are from 1/4" to 3/4". Can I cut this rod vertically for the smaller gaps without ruining the water absorption properties of it? Also, should I cut out the remaining grout out in the corners which will leave 1/4" to 3/4" gaps as well because he measured the tile wrong or caulk over what I've already cut out? The tiles are 18" tiles.

Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Our Sika Backer Rod is usually used with sealant applications. This would go in a 1/2" joint to prevent 3 sided adhesion. This is a unique application for the product. The backer may absorb water if cut. You may need to find another item for this application sadly.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. The closed cell backer rod does not allow any water or moisture to be absorbed. With open cell, it can absorb water. I hope this helps.
