Designed to replace nails in certain connectors, the load-rated Strong-Drive SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. The SD structural-connector screw features an optimized shank which is specifically designed to be compatible with the fastener holes in Simpson Strong-Tie connectors. The hex head virtually eliminates cam-out and helps avoid stripping of the head during installation. The sharp point of the screw enables fast starts, and the patented serrated threads reduce torque for improved drivability.

  • Tested and approved for use in many of our best-selling connectors for both interior and exterior applications
  • The single-fastener steel-side-plate load capacity of the SD9 exceeds that of the 10d common nail
  • Ideal for use in tight spaces where using a hammer is difficult and more control is desired
  • #9 x 1-1/2 in. Structural Screw
  • Includes 100 screws
  • Optimized heat-treating for ductility and strength

Answer:
They are self-tapping. I opted to pre-drill them for my installation, but I could just as easily have driven them without doing so and I did in a few cases when I didn't have my drill bit on me.

Answer:
Predrilling is not required for the SD Structural Connector screws, but is recommended if there is a potential for splitting. If you plan to predrill, a 3/32" bit should be used for the SD9 (as recommended in the NDS). Thank you!

Answer:
Actually... #9 answers it perfectly... Google "Wood screw dimensions" and you'll find several links that tell you a #9 screw is maximum head diameter .358" (23/64) shank size .177" (11/64) and obviously the length of these is 1 1/2 inch.
So, if you need 1/4" shank diameter, then you'd likely want a #14 screw. (I've uploaded a chart with this answer)

Answer:
Hello sd21c, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
Actually, screw sizes below ¼” are numbered. The shank size of this #9 screw is 0.131”, compared to the 0.250 (1/4”) that you are looking for.
See the spec sheet here:

I hope this helps,

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So much easier than nails! LOVE these fasteners! Much easier than hammering nails and (in my opinion) provide a tighter more secure joist set in place. May 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to drive with smaller impact driver I hate banging nails in tight spots, made life so much easier. Easy to remove to lift a joist hanger and reset. June 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Top Notch Fastener These screws were precisely what I was looking for when installing hurricane ties on my shed. The hex heads fit very snugly into the included bit, which virtually eliminates the chance of rounding and makes it easy to sink them one-handed. The ability to sink these screws with a drill is excellent, so is the ability to EASILY remove them if need be without having to beat on your structure or pry helplessly at nail heads. I see that many folks have complained about the price, even giving the product one less star because they feel that these fasteners cost too much. Look: they do cost more than comparable nails, but only because they are worth every penny. If you have the budget to afford these screws for use with your structural ties, then I highly recommend them. May 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Security for Joist Hangers I chose these screws because I was replacing an old 20' x 20' deck that was built in the 70's and as I ripped up the deck boards I could see that a lot of the nails used on the joist hangers had been either loosened over time or some the nail head had broken off. I have used these screws on a previous deck and they hold strong, plus they are design for the purpose of connecting joist hangers. The good thing about these also is that if you misplace a hanger for some reason you can easily remove the screw and move the hanger. These screws are also made to withstand the chemicals in pressure treated wood, so they won't rust away. September 18, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Mixed review on Simpson screw Most expensive but not easiest when using. While it comes with a hex-head bit that fits nice & tight, the screws are a challenge to sink into the wood - the pointed tips spin a lot before unexpectedly grabbing into the wood and THEN drive in uncontrollably fast causing it to sink much deeper than desired, sometimes. The tip affords very little grab and the shaft of the screw has way too much grabbing action. It's a tempermentatl fastener for sure! August 12, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by SIMPSON HEX-HEAD STRUCTURAL-CONNECTOR SCREWS The screws are strong and well-made; look durable though this is the first time I have used them. What I liked most is the hex-head fit snugly in the socket (the socket was included) so I was able to drill one-handed and use my other hand to hold the joist or whatever. They were a little on the expensive side (hence 4 stars instead of 5) but very pleased with the ease of use and quality. June 10, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great but expensive These are great for joist hangers and attaching anything galvanized to pressure treated wood but they are a little expensive. August 19, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nails for the air gun. works well in a multiple of guns. shots with-out jams, easy to load. September 2, 2014
