Product Overview

Simpson Strong-Tie hurricane ties are designed to resist high winds and seismic forces by positively connecting trusses/rafters to the top of wall of the structure. These ties connect both solid-sawn and engineered lumber across a wide range of applications. Some hurricane tie models are available with additional corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications.

  • Great for connecting 2x deck joists on top of a perpendicular beam
  • Install in pairs on either side of the rafter/truss/joist to provide resistance to uplift and lateral forces
  • Use also for a variety of connections where one member crosses another
  • Made from 18-Gauge steel
  • ZMAX galvanization offers extra corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications
  • Install with 8d common nails or #9 x 1-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws

Customer Questions & Answers

is this what you would recommend for a pergola rafter against a house

Asked by: becky
Yes. I built a free standing patio cover "connected" not attached to a breezeway roof. The breezeway roof is not a support structure. I have piers and posts to support the top header rafter ends next to that breezeway roof that makes it free standing.. The rafters butt against the breezeway facia and all have the hurricane tie attached to the rafter and header or top beam. I then put Mule-Hide peel and stick to cover the roof as opposed to open air pergola. Either way whether the pergola is solid roofing or open air the hurricane is what you want to use to "tie" the rafters to your facia. Hope this helps. There are not many applications where people attach or butt the pergola rafters to the facia. I did not want to cut into my roof to attach it, so it is low sloped.

can these be useed with 2x6 rafters attached to a 12 inch header

Asked by: klp0769
Yes. Your rafter sits on top of the header. Depending on the length of the rafter you may need to add blocking between the rafters to keep everything straight.

Do you have to use a birds mouth cut with this?

Asked by: MerB
You only need a bird's mouth cut if all of the rafter is not evenly supported on the header or top beam. If you have a slope you may need a bird's mouth cut on any rafter that is not equally supported. For a steep slope then yes. Low slope may require a very small bird's mouth.

Have used these many times now for various projects, easier and much more secure than toe nailing, even if it does use more screws or nails. For the last project I used them to attach deck joists to beams. I have also used them to attach roof joists to the walls of a 8x8 animal shelter. They did their job as a wind storm caught the 3' front overhang on the front of the shed and flipped the shed over a fence and onto its roof. The brackets held though and the damage was minimal (and no livestock was hurt). I credit this to the fact that 3 nails went into the header and the 4th bottom nail went into the stud, reinforcing the attachment between the header and stud as well, preventing the header from tearing off the studs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Strong We decided to use these on our outdoor pavilion.. Easy to use with straight or notched rafters...We used them for a notched overhanging rafter. Not sure they would work very well for a flush mount unless you had extra lumber at the bottom for the mounting screws.... Easily spray painted to match your color scheme..
