How much height space do you lose mounting to the existing shelf

If you mount to the existing shelf you're going to lose some height space that you have. So if my shelves are 3/4 inch high how much space in my going to lose by putting in the sliding shelf? For example, is it another inch on top of the 3/4 inches shelf?
Asked by: MN55123
Yes, About an inch from top of existing shelf to top of new shelf.

Attaching slide out to existing shelf

My cabinet has one shelf in it secured by plastic tabs. I am concerned that at the full extension of 24" of the slide out, too much leverage will be placed on the existing shelf secured by these plastic tabs and the shelf will fail. Are my concerns of consequence?.
Asked by: Gene
One of my shelves is attached via metal clips. I would suggest you replace the plastic with metal ones. Also, my shelf was adjustable with moving the clips in a higher hole on the side. What I did was put a clip above the shelf so that it would not be able to tip forward when the shelf is extended. I have heavy item on my drawer and it pulls out 3/4 way out. I would suggest that you do likewise. Sometimes when I pull it out it will tip but only can tip about 1/2 inch and that is working fine or you can put on metal "L" brackets so that this will not happen. I wanted to be able to adjust that drawer in the future which is why I didn't screw in the "L" brackets on my shelf.

What is the difference betweem full extension and 3/4 extension?

Asked by: jophes
The drawer pulls all the way out so you can really get to everything on the shelf. Works great, shelves are great quality.

So, why not five stars? I got the unfinished poplar wood front panels. The description says these are "paint grade" panels, so I expected a few blemishes and some color variation, but I was disappointed to get dark brown stripes across four out of eight front panels. I would have expected the supplier to weed-out wood having such severe color bands, even for a "paint grade" product.

They are sturdy and well-made, and already came finished with a semigloss varnish, which was a nice surprise. I installed two of these ln a cabinet for our pots and pans. A very professional-looking addition to our kitchen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest install ever! Pretty impressive to get this custom work when ordering online. Install was much easier that I had planned. How many jobs can you say that on. Of course you have to assemble each box. Total job time was 3 hours for seven boxes. ---so I bought the 8" high sides, which I love on all the lower shelves but my do over would be any shelf above chin height, I would not have sides on at all. Also, if your hinge sticks into opening, I personally would reduce my measurement by 1/8th inch. There is naturally room for hinge interference, but some are close and will probably have to be adjusted over time. Awesome product! NOT INEXPENSIVE, but worth it in quality and practical use.

The sequence of ordering on the Home Depot website is contradictory, because an order can be placed & accepted by HD BEFORE the measurements are entered... FIX THE WEBSITE PROCESS. Also, I believe the instructions are a too complicated... plus, we did not receive any screws w/ the shipment (though that's solvable by the local hardware store)... AND I believe the company should be using screws which have both Phillips & Hex heads. However, in spite of all that, I'll be ordering another 5 of these. My wife loves them for the bottom shelves!

Ordered a couple of these a few months ago for our bathroom & they worked ok. Tried to order one more for our kitchen, but the ordering system would not transfer me to the HomeDepot.com Slide-A-Shelf order page. Tried several times with no success. Very frustrating and cumbersome ordering system. Never did get my shelf ordered.

My complaint is not really with the product but rather the ordering instructions. If you follow the instructions on the Home Depot web page you go to the measuring link and then the ordering link. From there the instructions say you'll be returned to the home page where you should add the item to your cart and order. IF, by chance you decide to read further down the page (after you've placed your order) you'll see the fine print. There it tells you this shelf MUST be mounted on the cabinet floor base or an existing shelf. This very critical piece of information should be at the top of the page in the key bullet points. I purchased this to be a floating shelf and thus don't have the correct hardware to install.

Note that I used these in a custom 36" X 24"x 94" pantry that I built (my first attempt at such an endeavor). Note the instructions, and slide mechanism are for mounting on an existing shelf, or on the bottom floor of a cabinet. I wanted to install 4 slide-outs, with one mounted on the floor of the cabinet, but the other 3 located above it, mounted onto the interior walls of the cabinet. I did not want to mount stationary shelves in the upper 3 locations, just to mount these slide-outs, since that would be really ugly and a waste of space. For those upper shelves, I was able to use the existing hardware, make a spacer to mount the slides on the interior walls of the cabinet, and mount these. I was lucky that a 5/8 thick, 2" PVC molding was a perfect fit as a spacer, and I screwed the slide rails into the side of the cabinet. Had I not found a good fit with a standard piece of wood or molding, I would have had to plane it down, or try to rip something to the proper size. After talking live with a tech support person, they confirmed that they didn't promote this mounting arrangement since a bad measurement could put the slides in bind and create a bad experience. But they agreed, that if I have the spacing right, then just remove the bottom mounts, and use the holes in the side of the rails to mount. Just be aware, and if you have a similar mounting arrangement, you may want to call tech support first and get the measurements right. Another issue, is to be aware of the door handle locations. This is in the measuring instructions, but most doors have a hinge 3-4 inches from the bottom, and if the slide-out is mounted on the bottom of the cabinet, its right in the way. You can make the shelf narrower, but that takes away usable space, just due to the door hinge. I requested my door hinges to be 5" from the bottom, and it cleared the bottom shelf just fine.

Slide-A-Shelf is one of the few companies (other than local cabinet-making) companies) that will make wood drawers, etc. to your measurements vs. a standard size. The drawers we bought were well made and most come with a stainable front piece which can be stained to match your cabinets. The drawers come with great detailed color directions. Note: The drawer slide come with bottom-mount (vs. side mount) slides. If you are going to have a "middle" shelf in a cabinets you must provide a full with (vs. a half width) solid shelf. The slides mount with screws and one slide is adjustable in case the drawer is too tight or too loose. The slides seem to be a little noisier than was expected compared to other full-extension slides that we have. Note: Some ability to install these is helpful.
