Customer Questions & Answers

can I install this above a slab concrete floor

I want to convert a 12 x 12 area in my garage into a bedroom, can I use this product over the slab? There is no crawl space or basement beneath my garage slab floor. I live in Massachusetts where it can get quite cold. The walls and ceiling and windows and doors are very well insulated.
Asked by: concreteslabfloor
I believe the instructions advised to place something on the concret floor prior to laying the flooring. I did not pay close attention to the details as my issue did not involve concret. So yes you can use this product.

What is the amperage draw on one of the mats

Asked by: Dn
That depends on the mat size. The wattage is given. One unit that fits a bathroom is 240 watts. 240/120v= 2 Amps. For energy calcs, remember that you might set a timer for just 2 hours in the morning. Your jurisdiction will determine GFI requirements.

So if you don't want/need a thermostat, how does it work?

Is it just set to a max warmth if you don't use a programmable thermostat?
Asked by: Micio
You must use a thermostat for this product to work. I'm not an electrician so I do not know if you can wire the flooring to be on 24/7. Yes, the thermostat allows you to regulate the temperature for each use.

Install on concrete slab. Underlayment? Insulating?

I am planning to install the mat over on basement concrete floor with tile over it. Should I install some underlayment first? What kind would you recommend? Note that our rough-in wall height is only 6'11" so I'm trying to keep the total floor thickness to an inch if possible.
Asked by: Leo9
we would recommend a thermal break underlayment installed over their concrete slab before installation of the radiant floor mat. If they do a Google search for “Thermal Break Underlayment” they will find a number of manufacturers who supply the product just for this purpose. Any product with a “R” value greater than “1” will work well with our radiant floor products. Some of the cork underlayment products have a thickness of only 1.2 mm, with a “R” value greater than “3”. Sincerely, SunTouch

6 ft. x 30 in. 120V Radiant Floor-Warming Mat is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Mat - Check Your Math These are fine warming mats that are inexpensive and deliver a pleasantly warm floor when warming is all that's needed. These are NOT heaters. If your floor is actually cold these are not appropriate. You'll want to find a solution to your cold floor problem at its source anyway. You can certainly purchase 240v and larger floor heaters but unless there's simply no other option actively heating a floor is a losing battle and the best you can hope for is low electrical rates in your area. However, if your floors are just cooler than you'd like them be, especially in areas with tile or engineered flooring, these warming mats are great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product We chose this mat because of the value and the future expansion with the thermostat (remodel of bathroom, future remodel of kitchen). Installed mat above cementboard, but followed directions on CD which directed to use thinset, then place tiles on top in same step. Next time I will use self-leveling mortar to place the mat, then in the second step place the tile. We had problems ensuring the floor was level due to the increased height of the mat. I speak from the DIY'er point of view so it may not make a difference to those experienced in tile work. Overall pleased with the actual function of the mat, just wish I had followed my gut, rather than the instructions.
