My decorative castings chip easily

This question is from 92-1/2 lb. Type I White Portland Cement

I just started making some decorative castings in molds. I have used TXI White Portland, Type I and Quikete All Purpose sand. No aggregate added. Castings need to be smooth. Even after about three weeks, the cement chips easier than I thought it would. I have to add enough water so the mix will flow down into the mold and I'm feel confident that I haven't used too much. I'm making these to sell so I can't sell a product that is easily damaged. Some will get shipped. Can't have people getting damaged items. How can I make them harder? I will eventually add color to the mix and I have heard that white Portland works better for that. That's why I chose this product.

Answer:
You need aggregate small pea stone is best. If you cannot use aggregate you can try using additives to slow curing down and cover molds when curing with plastic. I would use a two sand to one cement mix for this type of casting. Also look into a vibrating table or a sander to hold against the mold trying the least amount of water possible.
