I'm needing to mount a 40 lb shelf unit 7 feet up on a wall. Once I get the books etc on the shelf, I expect the total weight to be 150-200 lbs. The 1/4 20 toggles are rated for just 80 lbs. What if I use 9 toggles to mount the shelving unit. Is my 200 lbs divided by the 9 toggles?
In other words each of the nine toggles would be supporting around 22 lbs each. The top row might have a little more of the shear weight on them. Are the any issues with my application or approach?

Thank you

Answer:
Keep in mind that your drywall is held by a dozen drywall screws to keep it up. Too much weight on the drywall may rip the whole wall off. It happened to me on my clothes shelve when I have too much clothes on the rack. My recommendation is to find the stud and attach your shelve to it.

With that kind of weight I'd be looking for more than drywall to hold it up. Either have at least two of the screws hit a wall stud or use what is called a "backer board" (plywood mounted to studs behind the drywall.

If you're pulling books on and off the shelf that's going to create more shear force and wear out the anchors. Read Less

My original plan was to use the power box to anchor the fixture but i seem to have metal ceiling joist behind the drywall so the box is not sturdy wnough to support the light fixture. I also was planning on using spring toggles but see these as easier to install and remove if necessary without losing the toggle

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by My TV Fall off whit this Anchor I put my TV in the wall whit this anchors and after a year my TV fall off the wall total lost now i don't have a TV and get a hole in my wall this thing didn't support the 80 pounds that said in the package so no trust in this thing whit your expensive stuff maybe you regret later..... Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by do not waste your money purchased at home depot got two toggles to hold out of two packs after reading instructions several times purchase another product August 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Plastic is cheap, all 6 broke off into the wall I am attempting to mount a 55 inch tv to metal studs and decided to give these toggle bolts a try instead of waiting on Hilti bolts to ship. The first four I got to line up in the pre-drilled holes but as soon as I tried to get the screw into the toggle hole the cheap plastic snapped and the metal backing fell into the wall. Attempted to be more careful with the next set and could only get one to work properly... the other 5 metal heads are now in my wall somewhere. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THESE July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lifesavers After hours of wasted effort pursuing other options I used these anchors to install a pedestal sink to a tiled wall when the blocking didn't align with the mounting holes.. If you're having trouble finding an anchor that really holds strong these are the ticket, forget the traditional toggles with their huge entry holes and chintzy bolts.. I think as long as you handle the plastic parts in a gingerly manner and make sure the toggle is properly aligned you shouldn't have problems- I did notice that the plastic seemed brittle but I removed and reinserted one toggle a few times and it didn't snap like some of the other reviewers mentioned. I love the beefy 1/4" 20 bolts that can be swapped out for longer hex heads for torquing down the mount in confined spaces (like the underside of a pedestal sink) Highly recommended for anything too heavy and important for plastic expanders or traditional toggles. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by The toggle will support heavier objects well. I used these to secure a hanging rail for kitchen cabinets into steel studs. This can be frustrating since some steel studs are too narrow for the toggles as is. I had to trim the business end so that it would straighten out when inserted. It is also difficult to get the screw to find the screw hole in the bolt. If the toggle is secured too tightly the plastic anchors will break before one can get the screw in. Once in though, they work well. June 19, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor knockoff of Hilti Toggle This is a poor knock-off of the Hilti toggle. Incredibly difficult to move the wing down against the surface of the drywall. Not worth it. December 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DO NOT BUY THESE- I'm saving you a second trip to HD The plastic straps are incredibly brittle, and the sliding cuff is near impossible to slide up into the drywall. I'm an experienced handyman, and I broke 4 of these into the wall before I even got one to sit flush on the drywall to accept a screw. Only then did I attempt (by hand) to insert the screw, before the 5th one broke off and the metal piece fell into the wall cavity. I will be demanding my money back with the remainder of the pack. Just buy a good old fashioned toggle bolt. I went back and spent about half of what these cost for a pack of 15 instead of 6. incredible frustrating and would love to see somebody do a successful install with these. July 27, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worked as Stated I read the reviews and wanted the Hilti, but only these were on the shelves. I can see where people might accidentally break the straps, but if you're patient and careful they work great. I hung my 55" TV on a 1950's drywall/plaster using 6 of these. I hung on the wall mount before putting up the TV. So it can hold at least 150lbs. December 20, 2015
