Customer Questions & Answers

Is this model a rear wheel drive?

I have read through the comments and the specifications. I see high wheel drive but do not want to assume it is a rear wheel drive and order one only to find out its a front wheel drive. Can anyone shed some light own this, Rear wheel drive or front wheel drive? Thanks, Jim
Asked by: Jim
Twice in the description it indicates this is REAR WHEEL DRIVE. I'd ask the seller only because there are LOTS of models... is this really the description for this mower? "Rear wheel drive self propel provides better traction in all cutting conditions - let the mower do the work"

If you want to stop moving, will the self-drive stop or will the wheels keep turning and drag you forward?

Asked by: Jon
If you stop walking, the mower drive mechanism stops powering the drive wheels.

In order to make safer & easier turns, can you release the handle to disconnect self-propelled featured?

Asked by: Steve
Absolutely! If you release the handle the mower stops and you can maneuver it as you will. My son who mows most of the time LOVES this mower because if is is moving too fast the handle falls farther back and that causes he mower to slow in contrast if it is moving too slow for you, the handle moves forward and speeds up the forward drive. if you just grab the metal bar and not the drive bar, it keeps the mower in neutral and you can maneuver it as you wish.

Bought this mower over the weekend to replace a perfectly good craftsman mower that was over 16 years old. I was looking to get a self propelled model since our new yard has VERY steep hills, and the craftsman was to hard to push up the hills...Well that being said now i am mad i waited this long to buy a self propelled mower! This Toro is amazing, pullled it out of the box, added the oil, and gas, pulled the starter rope and away i went, i made a slight adjustment to the personal pace setting because i could not keep up with the pace, slowed it down a bit(there are instructions on the left side of the handle on how to adjust pace) and now i can go up the VERY steep hills with one hand on the controls. I actually enjoyed mowing the lawn!!! If you are looking for a self propelled mower for steep hills, i would say look no further.

As reported by other reviewers, the left rear wheel on the mower I bought fell off after less than 25 feet of mowing. Reattaching the wheel a few times did no good as it continued to fall off every 25 feet or so. Obviously there is a design problem here, at least with some of the rear-wheel drive Smart Stow mowers. Thankfully my local Home Depot was great to deal with regarding the problem and fully refunded my money. I was satisfied with the look and feel of the mower and liked how easily it started, but none of that really matters if the wheels don't stay on the unit.

The traction V-belt got caught in the pulley three months after I purchased this lawn mower. Toro said it wasn't covered under the warranty. I had to purchase and install a new belt myself which turned out to be a two hour task. In order to change the belt the user must remove the handle assembly, all of the grass baffles, and the rear axle assembly. I ended up building a support to hold the mower up so I could work on it. This horrible design and cop-out response from Toro makes this a unit to avoid. To make matters worse I purchased a Protection Plan from Home Depot. Buyer beware.

I recently purchased this mower to replace an old Toro Personal Pace that I bought back in 1999. It was still running well but the deck was about to rust through. The person I gave it to will probably get at least another two years of service out of it. If the new one lasts even half as long as the old one I will be very happy. Below are my early impressions of the new product: Pro - * Looks great * Personal Pace self-propulsion is great, and it's rear-wheel drive (do not like front-wheel drive mowers) * starts easily (no choking or priming) * love the SmartStow feature (makes it much easier to clean out underneath and it requires considerably less storage space) * the engine does not flood or leak gas when tilted up for storage/cleaning Con - * oil level is extremely difficult to read. Dip stick always comes out with oil smeared all over it, not just up to where the oil level is. * mower is harder to turn in corners than my old one. Possibly because of its wider width or larger rear wheels. * is not easy to back the mower up * SmartStow is great, except it is not convenient to maneuver it around when its in the upright position. The wheels turn hard. * control cables stick out in harms way on the left side of the mower. Easy to catch on something you're mowing close to. As I said before, these are just my initial impressions. I've only mowed my lawn twice with it. My opinions may change as I get more used to the mower. And I might discover additional pros and cons. Overall I'm quite happy with it so far.

There is a plate underneath the deck at the front of the mower. The plate was installed with a gap between the plate and the mower deck and grass gets stuck in that gap. Very hard to clean out. I am going to try putting some sealer in this opening and see if that helps.

I waited till this model had the EXI engine. I wanted the "Smart stow" feature but I also wanted the OHV engine. So far I have not been disappointed. It started on the first pull and has tons of power. For the money it is hard to beat. The personal pace rear drive works like a champ. It sips fuel. My old mower used twice the fuel for the same job. They say you do not have to change the oil but I still think I will suck it out and do it once a season. I would definitely recommend this mower.

Didn't plan on writing a review but my unfortunate experience compelled me to do so. Absolutely loved this mower when using it for the first time. Impressed with its handling and somewhat quiet motor. About a half hour into the mowing, the engine began to sputter every couple minutes; to the point that I thought it would completely die. The sputtering would occur even when grass wasn't being cut, so it wasn't a heavy cut that was causing the problem. I later decided to stop the engine altogether and restart, only to find it next to impossible to restart it altogether. Since this happened on its maiden voyage, I'll be returning it for its Honda equivalent; which I don't want to do since I prefer this mower's large rear wheels and storage capacity. But I simply need a mower that I can fully depend on getting the job done effectively and without excessive effort.

One complaint is the manual adjustment of the "Personal Pace" chord... would prefer if it had a lever instead of a twist knob... when I loosened it the first time the line got slacked and it took some time to get the tension right to where the Self-Propel would work again. The cleaning port (hose attachment) was kind of silly... didn't really clean all that well. Would be nice if it rolled backwards easier or had two-way propel function... I constantly have to U-turn or mow in circles. I prefer mowing back and forth in a push/pull method. All in all, it does what it does very well at a great price.
