Questions & Answers

Will this seal composite deck?

Asked by: Kd
Composite decking needs no seal. Its made mostly of plastic, so is NOT wood.

Seal concrete? Like a countertop or outdoor concrete table?

Asked by: Glu
I'd use a product specifically for sealing concrete. Contact a concrete supplies business. We found one water-clear product, which was warrantied for over 25 years or so...applied that over 15 years ago, to concrete foundations exposed to harsh weather....it seems to still be working well. Sorry, cannot remember what the name of that was.

If I spray on to Cedar fencing, do I have to sand the fencing down or spray 2 coats?

Asked by: Glu
If you really want to do that much sanding....go for it! This coating will raise-grain, regardless of sanding between coats. Our project started with what we thought were finely-sanded pine lumber, yet the 1st coat raised-grain so much, it really needed re-sanded after each coating. And, because of this, we're only applying 3 coatings....the sanding after 3rd coating on some pieces, caused the coating to pill-up a bit. Fencing is usually rough anyway; so I'd spray one coat, allow to dry as can label directions describe, then spray on next coating.

can you use this for a Butcher Block Counter

I want to go to a butcher block counter tops but I'm looking for stain and sealer that is non toxic. Even though I will use a chopping board I want to know if it is safe.
Asked by: OldSchool
Mix mineral oils and melted beeswax. It cools into a paste and works excellent for cutting boards/butcher blocks.

VOC Free Non Toxic Lumber-Seal 1 gal. Clear Satin Wood Sealer is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing for reptile projects :) Love it I used this to seal outdoor, wooden enclosures for my 4 tortoises and it is amazing. I also used it in my savannah monitors wooden enclosure which has to maintain high humidity. This product has held up beyond . I highly recommend it for reptile enclosures, plant beds, or anything animal related :) I used 4 coats just to be overly cautious bc i used the cheapest wood i could find lol it made it slightly sticky but is smoothe and def works. Dries clear. Make sure to brush it on in a circular motion until it turns foamy aka activating the polymers then brush the foam out :) the foam will turn white but will dry clear :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must put on thick After trying different techniques I finally figured out what works the best. I'm finishing Redwood paneling for my wine cellar ceiling. I first sanded the wood with 220 grit sandpaper and then use a foam brush to apply a thick coat of the sealer. The paint brush I was first using wasn't leaving on thick enough and some pieces I had put on five coats and it still didn't look like a nice finish. so I put on a thick coat with the foam brush and let it dry and then lightly sand and then put another coat on. That seems to work the best. No smell. Not much of a satin finish. Very low sheen when dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am very happy that this product is available.... I am very happy that this product is available. I had to do the ceiling and the floor in my new porch. I tried spraying the ceiling, but that was not successful. I ended up just putting it on with a brush. It went on easily. When you put it on, there is a white opaque color, but that disappears quickly, so I had to mark where I started because by time I got to the other end the opaqueness had disappeared. On the floor, I used a staining brush. Again, it was quick and easy to apply. I am very happy with the results, so far. Would definitely use this product again.

Used this product to seal the new, cedar picnic table we got for the employee break area. Since it's open to the weather, we wanted to make sure the table was protected from the elements to the best extent possible. This sealer makes the rain bead up on the surface of the wood. It should extend the life of the picnic table by keeping it from soaking up the rain water. Happy with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outside cat condo I have a cage (condo) that our cats access though a pet door in a window. The 4 levels are exterior plywood and not pressure treated to be safe and I water proofed the wood with this because it is not harmful, and non toxic. So far it has seen a lot of rain with no problem.

I didn't expect much because any time you see words like "non-toxic" or "eco-friendly" on a product that usually translates into "it doesn't work." As it turns out, this was actually pretty good. The can says you have to constantly agitate the product for it to work. Once shaken you open it up and it's kind of milky and foamy which is completely unlike what you would expect. It almost looks like a water-based product. Nonetheless, it went on smoothly and clings like an oil, it doesn't just dry up and evaporate like something watery. The items I sealed were wooden houses for inside an animal enclosure at a local animal sanctuary. ( Bobcats, servals, leopard cats, etc. ) I can't have them chewing on the wood and coming down with something toxic that makes them ill. It's hard to tell just how well this product will last since it's only been a month, but I can at least attest that in the last month it looks good. If this didn't even pass the first month then I'd cheerfully leave it a bad review but so far, so good. After 30 days it seems to be waterproof and isn't hurting the cats. I would recommend this for anyone who needs to seal wooden items where animals are involved.
