Customer Questions & Answers

Will this seal composite deck?

Asked by: Kd
Composite decking needs no seal. Its made mostly of plastic, so is NOT wood.

Seal concrete? Like a countertop or outdoor concrete table?

Asked by: Glu
I'd use a product specifically for sealing concrete. Contact a concrete supplies business. We found one water-clear product, which was warrantied for over 25 years or so...applied that over 15 years ago, to concrete foundations exposed to harsh weather....it seems to still be working well. Sorry, cannot remember what the name of that was.

If I spray on to Cedar fencing, do I have to sand the fencing down or spray 2 coats?

Asked by: Glu
If you really want to do that much sanding....go for it! This coating will raise-grain, regardless of sanding between coats. Our project started with what we thought were finely-sanded pine lumber, yet the 1st coat raised-grain so much, it really needed re-sanded after each coating. And, because of this, we're only applying 3 coatings....the sanding after 3rd coating on some pieces, caused the coating to pill-up a bit. Fencing is usually rough anyway; so I'd spray one coat, allow to dry as can label directions describe, then spray on next coating.

We built a completely wooden sustainable house in the tropical rainforests of a Belize ecovillage. Rainy season is amazingly humid and the rains are brutal when they hit. Rainy season lasts 8 months. Dry season is really, really hot and the sun is harsh. The environment is tough here. We imported Lumber-Seal and sprayed it on our initial shed and eventually our to our house. We can certainly see the beaten parts that we missed. It's kind of embarrassing. It hasn't even been a year in these harsh conditions, and the Lumber-Seal portions are unscathed, and the unprotected parts are battered. The stuff doesn't smell like chemicals either, which is a bonus. There's no smell when dry. It keeps the natural hugh of the wood, though it does make it richer in the natural color. A little goes a long way too - especially when sprayed. One must just cover up when spraying it on. It's sticky at first, then in these humid conditions takes a few days to dry. I am sure it would dry way faster in dry season. Laundry takes a week to dry in wet season. Nonetheless, I would certainly recommend this stuff to the rest of my village. It's certainly an ecovillage staple, I'd say. Scout-Ecovillages-Belize, MX 2014

This sealer went on very easily and even though the directions say it's not necessary, I went ahead and applied 2 coats. It goes on very easily and seems to work well. Time will tell if it lasts like it says it will (which is one of the main reasons why I chose this particular sealer---5 year warranty), but for now, it gets 5 stars. I don't remember what type of coverage the directions say it will cover, but my deck is 14' wide and 22 feet long and I used 3 gallons (two coats).

We used garden sprayers and brushed over any overspray. We ordered 2 more cans for more coating for our interior pine tongue and grove. It's lovely and doesn't change the color. It may brighten some areas.

PROJECT: We started with Ikea Ivar solid wood [pine] shelving, which was pretty well-sanded already. FINISH: Very clear, extremely thin coat; once dried, cannot tell it's there; wood feels and smells like the wood it is. The no-VOC part is VERY good. One coating of this finish raised the grain, making the wood itself feel like sandpaper. Must finely and thoroughly re-sand wood surfaces, as this product raises grain. Will have to sand between coatings too. And it will take many coatings to get a decent finish, because this stuff really is very thin coating. Can't see it, smell it, nor feel it on the wood, with only one coating, but can still smell the wood itself... ....which does not bode well for the company's claim that this product can lock in VOC's on existing surfaces it's used on. It might slow and reduce the VOC emissions at a given time, _but that will just cause those to more slowly emit_, taking longer to out-gas. It's probably better if you artificially age-out existing VOC -laden surfaces, using heat and cool cycles and good ventilation. If you are trying to make your home as non-toxic as possible, this could work for you as new-surface; more as a new finish, not so much as a sealer to lock-in other VOC's.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Far So Good I applied this to rough cut hemlock. It's easy to over do it as it's milky and soaks up quickly. I ran out and had to buy another gallon. I was more careful with the second gallon and had enough to finish the first coat and apply a second coat. It's easy to apply with a broad brush and it dries pretty quickly. It also washes out of the brushes pretty nicely. It gives the wood a really nice rich color - a shade or two darker than no color at all. Only time will tell how well it preserves the wood. Living in Maine, the harsh weather does a number on any exterior. I'm prepared to re-apply every 2-3 years.
