Customer Reviews

1/2 pt. American Walnut Wood Stain is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Varathane Stain Varathane is my #1 choice for achieving that deep and dark, chocolate, mocha, espresso, etc. color of stain that is so popular today. If you use another kind of stain you will have trouble achieving that deep dark color. It will look like light wood wearing dark sunglasses, versus dark all the way through- if that makes sense. Varathane gives that deep all the way through color. Also, with Varathane the stain dries evenly- no need to spend extra money on a pre-stain conditioner. I had a wooden box beam ceiling that was installed around 1980. I had to expand the ceiling after taking out a wall and a fur down. The original stain had darkened and ambered over the years. I literally bought every brand and color of stain in the store. I mixed and matched over several nights in order to find the right color to blend in the new wood with the old box beams. 2 parts Varathane American Walnut to 1 part Varathane Dark Walnut was the correct mix. 1 application with a long dry time, did the trick. Only Varathane could provide the deep dark color I was looking for. Another reviewer complained that the product was more like brown paint. Well, I can't tell you how many times I've looked at a dark stained piece of wood and thought, "I wish I could just paint it brown because the other name brand stain will not stain as deep as I want". This is the product your looking for if you want that deep dark stain. This is an excellent product and I've tried every brand at Home Depot. Although I use another brand of poly that is very popular, Varathane is my go-to stain from now on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dark Brown Paint This looks nothing like the picture. It basically looks like very flat dark brown paint.
