Answer:
Viastone Grow Rocks have a similar weight to that of pumice rocks though they may be slightly or heavier with a higher density. However, viastone grow rocks are baked in a large rotating kiln which gives the grow rocks a smoother baked surface so that there are no sharp edges (like pumice) assuring the roots of plants are not scratched or cut causing systemic infection.

50 l ViaStone Hydroponic Gardening Medium Grow Rock is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Floating Hydroponic Stones I read a reviewer who said this product floated. I assumed the writer meant a few stones floated. NOPE. The whole freakin 50L bag floats in a 50 gallon trash can. That is a definitely problem! These stones are NOT SUITABLE for flood and drain! Fortunately for me I was planning on using fabric pots in my aquaponic flood and drain bed to cut down on maintenance. If the stones float in the pots I can use pebbles on top to hold them down. Other than the surprise of seeing 50 liters of stones float, these stones seem extremely hard, and non porous (meaning they do not get water logged and sink - I've soaked them.) So they should to the job. TiP: Before using clean these stones. Put about 30 small holes in the bottom of the bag with a screwdriver or such. Than cut a slit in the top. Use a hose to run water through the slit at top. There is always lots of dust with hydro rocks. So running water through the bag rinses most of the dust out the bottom. Than dump the rocks in a big container for a more thorough washing. Recommended with qualifications.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from As others have stated most of the product does float, if you plan to use for hydroponics you will... As others have stated most of the product does float, if you plan to use for hydroponics you will have to have some means to anchor your plants. In my ebb and flow I use buckets so I will just be loading the buckets to the max, cut a hole in the lid and that should hold everything in place. On another note, this stuff is littered with junk, in one bag I came across two pieces of industrial metal (they looked like large needle bearings, about 2 inches long and 1/8 inch diameter) as well as about a dozen pieces of wood chunks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Aquaponics grow medium I really like these expanded clay rocks. They are just the right size and perfect for hydroponic growing. I did not fine them to be overly dusty but wash them before using. The shipping charges on the other hydroponic rocks make them too expensive and Viagrow 50 bought through Home Depot eliminates those charges.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not for aquaponics This product floats in water and it is not pH neutral. Both make this very unsuttable for aquaponics. Wasted my money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good growing media I have purchased 6 bags so far and am very pleased..This product is being used in my Aqua pontics systems. The plants and fish both seem to thrive very well. 50 LT. is about 12.25 gallons and weighs around 29 LBS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, readily available. Purchased this to use as media in a flood-and-drain aquaponics system. Works very well for this purpose. Things to note are: - Media must be rinsed thoroughly before use, to remove the clay dust. Failure to do this could cause clouding (of concern in an aquaponics system, maybe not so much for hydroponics) and the powdered clay forming a sludge that could be detrimental to the pumps and plumbing. - Expanded clay has some air in it, and will not sink like a stone. It does have a tendency to rise, especially when bone-dry, or if the media is drowned and submerged to its complete depth. In our system, for a grow bed depth of 16 inches, we had to set the overflow drain 3 inches BELOW the top level of the media, and that allowed the weight of the unsubmerged media to counter the floating of the submered media and keep the whole system in place. In summary, the quality, availability and pricing (especially with the ship-to-store option that helps offset the steep shipping for this large heavy item) makes this product and HomeDepot a winning combination.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from With FREE shipping, this is a great deal ! Home Depots policy of free shipping over $50 purchase makes it nice on this product...other venders want 35bucks per bag for shipping ! These clay balls are very dirty, dont forget to wash them first ! or the clay dust will clog up your pumps....but other than they are a bit small, and dry out quicker than the "other guys" they work fine. I wish they would add one of the newer recycled glass rock products, they are better at water retention, but adjust your ebb and flow to tighter delta's, and your plants wont suffer...Deep Water Cultures wont notice any difference. Im not sure yet on how well they work for a biofilter in Aquaponics, that may be the tell, on where they fall for a final rating. As always, HOME DEPOT shipped right away and for free, cant beat that with a stick
