I water this plant about every 9 days and soak it. I have also transplanted it into a bigger pot. What is causing the leaves to turn black and then die?

Answer:
It could be too much water or too much sun. These are shade loving plants. The soil should be moist but not soaking. An easier way to check would be to water from the bottom of the pot. A plant will stop absorbing water when it has had enough so you dont need to guess. Also, transplanting a plant causes stress so give it a few days to stabilize.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 22 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Peace Of Mind Plant This plant is healthy and easy to care for as well as it comes in a self watering pot. As long as you read and follow instructions when it arrives this plant is very easy to care for. Very little to do and it has continued to look great and fluish. Green and flowers bloom often. Larger than I thought it would be. May 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't flower The flowers made It look great in the store, but once those flowers fell off, it would not flower again. What I found when I researched was that it doesn't flower naturally. Growers give it a chemical, gibberellic acid, to make it flower in the store. Other than that, it is hard to duplicate the tropical rain forest conditions these plants are used to. Also, contrary to what they say here, it does not need large amounts of light. In fact, it's NOT supposed to be put i direct sunlight. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Still alive. I bought 2 of these because they are supposed to be great for cleaning the air. Had low expectations since they were very inexpensive and I am really bad at keeping plants alive. The plants arrived in perfect condition and were absolutely florist shop quality. The water wicking pot makes care exceedingly simple and both plants are not only alive but thriving. Could not be happier with my purchase. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome! This plant arrived securely packaged with no broken stems, leaves, or flowers. The self watering pot is a great way to prevent overflow! I highly recommend this to everyone. I certainly do not have a green thumb, and so far, so good! May 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Arrived dead Ordered this plant. It shipped 4 days after ordering and was delivered 4 days after it was shipped. I opened the box and the plant was completely dead and wilted. I tried to water to revive, but it was too late. complete waste of money. Very disappointed. February 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worst purchase ever plant was DOA....no hope...chalk it up to experience February 10, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Hardy plant I purchased both sizes of this plant in early fall 2015 and there was a world of difference in the size of these plants. That's okay although you get way more "bang for the buck" ordering the larger plant. One thing that has surprised me is the soil this smaller plant is potted in. The soil is hard, almost concrete-like. Even though the plant arrives in a nice planter, I had to transplant the poor thing to a better quality potting soil so the self-watering planter really didn't matter much. January 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DOA= Dead on arrival !!! And I mean DEAD !!!! The soil around the plant was soaking wet as were the leaves. I don't know if this plant came from my local Home Depot but I kind of doubt it because from the looks of it upon arrival it looked like it came from somewhere extremely cold, because I've never seen leaves on a plant like that unless they had been frozen then thawed by the time it got to me. I tried to let it "dry out" in hopes of saving it but the damage had already been done and there was no saving it probably came from back east during their snow storm !! Not all is lost tho, I took it back to my local Home Depot and they were more than happy to give me a refund or store credit which is what a chose because I needed one more plant to put in the empty spot where the dead plant was supposed to be, surely not because I really needed another plant as I have 52 plants !!! But I had to fill the void right ?? Haha !! I should mention that I bought 2 other plants when ordering the" dead" one and they arrived beautifully. I ordered a rubber plant and a Croton and I love them. They are beautiful and I've only had them for about 3 weeks and they already have new leaves popping up everywhere especially the Rubber plant so I'm very pleased with my order and the great customer service I received. Thank you Home Depot !!! P.S. You're probably wondering why anyone would order house plants, or any plant for that matter, site unseen but I had just had knee surgery and wasn't up to shopping while hobbling around on crutches so I thought I would take a chance and order them online and other than the dead plant I would highly recommend the Rubber plant and Croton but be aware because they can get quite large !! From one happy plant lover:-) February 10, 2016
