I water this plant about every 9 days and soak it. I have also transplanted it into a bigger pot. What is causing the leaves to turn black and then die?

Answer:
It could be too much water or too much sun. These are shade loving plants. The soil should be moist but not soaking. An easier way to check would be to water from the bottom of the pot. A plant will stop absorbing water when it has had enough so you dont need to guess. Also, transplanting a plant causes stress so give it a few days to stabilize.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 25 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Nice Plant Plant arrived in perfect condition. About 16" with 4 flowers. One flower wilted after a couple of weeks but a new one is sprouting. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Peace Of Mind Plant This plant is healthy and easy to care for as well as it comes in a self watering pot. As long as you read and follow instructions when it arrives this plant is very easy to care for. Very little to do and it has continued to look great and fluish. Green and flowers bloom often. Larger than I thought it would be. May 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't flower The flowers made It look great in the store, but once those flowers fell off, it would not flower again. What I found when I researched was that it doesn't flower naturally. Growers give it a chemical, gibberellic acid, to make it flower in the store. Other than that, it is hard to duplicate the tropical rain forest conditions these plants are used to. Also, contrary to what they say here, it does not need large amounts of light. In fact, it's NOT supposed to be put i direct sunlight. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beauty!!! Plant is beautiful, no complaints!!!! Flower after flower keep blooming! Love this plant!!! May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice plant in a very nice pot This plant took a lengthy trip to reach my door, but it survived the trip. The self-watering pot is great. I'm very happy with this purchase. Thank you. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Still alive. I bought 2 of these because they are supposed to be great for cleaning the air. Had low expectations since they were very inexpensive and I am really bad at keeping plants alive. The plants arrived in perfect condition and were absolutely florist shop quality. The water wicking pot makes care exceedingly simple and both plants are not only alive but thriving. Could not be happier with my purchase. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome! This plant arrived securely packaged with no broken stems, leaves, or flowers. The self watering pot is a great way to prevent overflow! I highly recommend this to everyone. I certainly do not have a green thumb, and so far, so good! May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty plant Plant first looked like it was a little limpy and had one bloom that had some brown spots on it. However after two days of it being in water, all the leaves perked up and it doesn't look old like how it did when it came (possibly because it was a holiday weekend so plant was deprived of water and sun). It's been two weeks now and the other flowers are blooming and it looks fantastic! Pot it came in doesn't look bad either, so I didn't have to transfer it to another planter. June 10, 2014
