Customer Questions & Answers

question about the dimensions

I'm familiar with typical differences in lumber measurements, such as 2x4 means it's a 1.5 etc.. anyone know the reason this piece being a 2x2 would only measure 1-1/4"? I needed a 1.5" board for a TV riser and got this one and was stumped at the 1.25" measurement. I've never seen this before.

My original 2x2s on my original deck (~ 30 years ago) were ripped from a 2x4 and thus like you said, they actually were about 1.5 x 1.5. These 2x2s actually look much better because they do not have the rough cuts due to they were planned and sanded to get the roughness removed. Hope that helps!!

Your specs. show 2x2 this a true 2x2.....or is it 1.5x1.5 inch....? you carry any of this type of inexpensive balusters in a larger dimension(say 3x3)...and also longer than 42 inches..?

Someone today answered my question about these balusters being a true 2"x2"........but in reading others who had the same question they show a smaller finished size. ....who TRULY knows the correct answer..??

Are they really 2"x2" as shown in the spec? A full 2"?

Asked by: Jim
No, they are sanded/planned from a ripped 2x4. Looks nicer without the rough cut that I had originally used on my deck ~ 30 years ago.

2 in. x 2 in. x 42 in. Wood Pressure-Treated Mitered 1-End B1E Baluster (16-Pack) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value Some pieces had too many imperfections/dents, etc. maybe they were to add style or rustic design? but I prefer clean pieces. Good amount for cost. Wish these were available in my local store so I could pick out my pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 by 2 Pressure treated Baluster The rails aren't 2 by 2 but 1.25 by 1.25 by 42 inches . Good quality , easy to install but required a pilot hole to install , in order to keep from cracking .

None of the packages had no culls in them. Most packages had quit a few with problems. The problems were: bowing; mildew; loose knots and cracks; and errant sawcut marks. The cut marks was the most prevalent of the issues. These marks were deep and were always down at the beveled end of the baluster. My client was nice enough to except the use of some of these, since they were in an area of the deck that he didn't feel would be very visable. I don't usually write reviews, and I try to be gracious; leaving room for human error. I felt I needed to speak up on this one however. These issues were very noticeable, and could have been caught in several areas of the process. prior to coming to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than buying in store! I replaced one of the decks at our house and needed to replace the railings as well. The balusters sold in store are redwood at about $3.50 each. As the deck and railings are stained I couldn't see spending $3.50 per baluster. The pressure treated ones are just about $1.00 each which makes them much more economical unless your project requires that real redwood appearance. Shipping was free! So in the long run I saved on materials, time to go to the local HD to get them, and gas to get there. Quality is good, I only rated 4 bars as they were not all cut the same length which meant a bit more cutting for me. Overall wood quality was great. As with most things time will tell how they stand up to the elements.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pressure treated 2 x 2 pickets mitered on 1 end Excellent value of a 16 pack of 2 x 2 pickets which was used for replacing deck railing. Less expensive than purchasing the pieces individually. The price also included FREE shipping right to our door. Very happy to find this item was mitered on one end, which literally saved me hours of work. The wood was pressure treated, which will hold up well in the damp weather in the Seattle area. Also bought other lumber from Home Depot to complete the project. Although one of the pieces was broken, I would recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Free shipping was the best part Buying prepackaged balusters seemed like a good idea. The bundles came in a very heavy package delivered to my doorstep. The balusters were still wet (from pressure treating?). I opened the bundles and distributed them in my garage in order to get them to dry out. I rejected 14 of the 48 (three bundles) because they were too warped to use. I had to buy more balusters at my local Home Depot in order to have enough for my project. I hand selected the replacements at the store. They also were wet in the bundle and are currently drying in the garage. They are listed as 2x2 but actual dimensions are 1.25" x 1.25" x 42" nominal. The finish is rough and inconsistent. I will use them but, they are not what I expected.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for the money Takes stain and paint well and looks like it will hold up well. The only problem is that I had to pre drill holes to screw it into my deck. Splitting is common especially if you make the screw too tight. I bought 6 packs of 16 and each batch had a slightly different length. Some also had large defects in the wood as you would expect in real wood. The defects are either large missing sections of wood due to what looked like a rotted section around a large know when the ball asters were cut.
