Is this 4.25 lb tank the 1 gallon size or which size in gallons?

Asked by: pinetree
capacity of this tank is 1-gallon. the tank weighs 11-lb. empty and ~15.2-lb. full, so 1-gallon of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) weighs ~4.2-lb.

We do a bit of tent camping, and the 20 lb. tanks are just overkill. Conversely, the tiny green disposable cylinders are costly and short-lived, not to mention a solid waste disposal concern. It doesn't cost any more per gallon to fill this 4.25 lb. than a 20 lb. size. I filled this one for under $2. Everything about this tank is perfect for my family; compact, easy to haul and set up for picnics, tailgating or camp. Stability of the base on this cylinder is a plus, being full width, rather than the tapered ones with a base ring that match trailer mounts. I have owned other small size refillable propane cylinders. The most recent one reached expiry for refill. I was prepared to seek recertification, until I learned it would only buy another five years, not the original dozen. I decided to buy new and recycle the old one (w/valve removed). I looked at this exact same cylinder from various sources; Home Depot had the best price. I would be remiss not to mention that there was a picking error on the drop-ship from Worthington. I received one of the 20 lb. size, which I returned to my local Home Depot store. I expressed concern about having to wait for a replacement shipment, and was offered a small discount. Thanks go to Home Depot customer service for making it right, even though the error was not their own. I highly recommend Home Depot for this great item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size for car camping If you use a two burner camp stove and a small grill this tank is the perfect size. A post and hoses makes it complete. The initial cost is a little high as the tank is about $20 more than a standard 20# tank and the post and a couple hose will set you back another $30 or $40, but it is much easier to haul around than the bigger tank and it is cheaper to fill than it is to buy those wasteful 1# disposable cylinders. I paid $2.88 to fill the tank and we used about half of it in nine days of camping. That is about 3 of those disposable tanks which cost $5 or $6 each, plus there is no heavy steel to throw away.

I actually bought this recently for a friend to use at home with her new small grill. I also bought the adapter hose which goes between the tank and grill to go with it. It's light enough for her to easily carry to and from getting it filled. It will save money by not using the small green canisters, and she doesn't have to worry about disposal of them either. I think she should get at least 20 hours of use before refilling. The 20# tanks can be fairly heavy and cumbersome for some people to manage, and even the 11-13# canisters may be difficult to manage, but this just seemed ideal. Also, it can be used for a picnic or a weekend trip, without having the green canisters to deal with. I plan on borrowing it now and then!

It is a fine tank, but I am having a real challenge finding a propane dealer with the equipment and knowledge to purge the tank, which must be done before it can be filled. For the price of this tank, I expected that it would have been purged. I have bought less expensive tanks and they were already purged.

The real bargain is saving on the cost of propane. The charge was $1.79 to fill the tank, and the tank is the equivalent of 4 of the 1-lb disposable cylinders selling for $3-4/cylinder.
