Answer:
You should be able to just pull it. If it feels stuck you may have to unwind as you pull. Having an extra hand sometimes will help in a stuck situation.

Answer:
This one is a little stiff so for regular sinks I would simply pull the metal tape out of the reel with my hands versus the reel since I only needed so much in regards to length. The reel does work as well but it may be a little hard for the first couple of turns.

Judi, thank you for your question. To unwind the cable on this BrassCraft Sink Cleaner, you pull the flat tape out of the housing slightly and then you use the handle to unwind the flat tape from the housing.

Hi there--I have a kitchen drain that is weirdly plumbed and sometimes gets clogged, even though I'm careful to use a trap for food debris; The U-trap is about 4 ft from the drain itself, with a long stretch of pipe leading to it. I've used this tool twice, trying to avoid calling my Super, and it gets stuck on something in there--this last time a plumber had to remove it for me, so I'm obviously not going to stick I in there again.. :( Is there something I could do to the augur on the end to make it smooth? Cover it with epoxy or something? It's getting hooked on the rivet which holds the screw on, I think. Ever heard of this problem? Any suggestions? The first time, I got it out by pouring a bunch of vegetable oil down the drain...!

Kooky,
Thank you for your question.
As with any drain cleaning project, it is always recommended that you wear fitted work gloves and safety glasses. This is especially important if drain cleaning chemicals were previously used in an attempt to clear a clog.
To use the flat tape sink cleaner, start by pulling the flat tape out of the housing with your hand (make sure the gloves are on). Turn the handle on the housing to assist. Feed flat tape down the drain until you reach the clog.
When you hit the clog, hold onto the handle of the sink cleaner with one hand, while keeping your other gloved hand loosely on the flat tape. Push the flat tape further into the drain. Keep pushing until the clog is cleared.
Turn the handle on the sink cleaner to retract the flat tape back into the housing.

Considering its price, it's not dreadful but it didn't clear the particular blockage I had (i used a compressed air can thing, also available at Home Depot for about $10 and it worked like magic). If it was a hair clog it probably would have helped and although the cable is a bit flexible (ie not really strong enough) I decided to keep it as it was so cheap and may be of use down the road.

It’s poorly designed tip got stuck in the pipe on a turn and it thought I was going to have to cut the pipe to get it out. It took me about 30 minutes to get out of the drain and promptly tried to coil it up which was nearly impossible without breaking the flimsy case/handle. I used the ultra-strength draino and the clog cleared overnight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great snake for sinks Great product. This product helped me finally remove a clog in a sink drain. I tried a larger snake but it was too large to go thru pipes used this worked instantly. Great price too not over expensive. The flat tape design makes it easy to slide thru pipes. I would recommend this product

That makes the first bend in the pipes easy however if the second bend comes at an angle ie. 90 degrees to the first the product would need to bend against it's width ,that is not going to happen...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Saved me a plumber call I used this product to help me unclog the ac condensing unit drain plug. Took a little time to make it to the actual area where the clog took place, but after all was said and done, I got the drain back to normal. Highly recommended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ineffective design The quality is better than the one from the competing blue store. However, this design with the flat spring steel is difficult to use and not very effective in cleaning the drain. I will stick to the coil spring style.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works - but winding in and out is difficult. The snake metal tape is good. the case that hold it is flimsy and separates as you try to wind it. Even without any pressure on the metal tape the case wants to split at the seams.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sink Cleaner It's for small jobs ... I needed something for a larger job. So I took advantage of Homedepots excellent return policy and exchanged it for a larger device
