Questions & Answers

how do i get the snake to unwind from the spool so I can use it?

Asked by: Judi
Great question, had the same challenge! After removing all of the product sticker(s), I had to attach the end to an anchor (in this case a hook in my garage wall), and then pull. I left it anchored and pulled out the full 20'. Then i coated the tape with a lubricant and wound it up using the handle as close to the center as possible. Am hoping the lubricant will coat the insides to make the pull much easier in the future.

HOW TO USE A BRASS CRAFT FLAT TAPE SINK CLEANER

TELL ME STEP BY STEP ON HOW TO USE THE FLAT TAPE SINK CLEANER
Asked by: KOOKY
Unwind and push through to the clog turning the whole thing in you hands to spin the auger. Though you will likely have to disassmble you drain and it could not get through our sinks s tube to get to the clog.

This auger gets caught on the plumbing fixtures!

Hi there--I have a kitchen drain that is weirdly plumbed and sometimes gets clogged, even though I'm careful to use a trap for food debris; The U-trap is about 4 ft from the drain itself, with a long stretch of pipe leading to it. I've used this tool twice, trying to avoid calling my Super, and it gets stuck on something in there--this last time a plumber had to remove it for me, so I'm obviously not going to stick I in there again.. :( Is there something I could do to the augur on the end to make it smooth? Cover it with epoxy or something? It's getting hooked on the rivet which holds the screw on, I think. Ever heard of this problem? Any suggestions? The first time, I got it out by pouring a bunch of vegetable oil down the drain...!
Asked by: DrB
Dear DrB – thank you for your question. We do not recommend modifying the sink cleaner for your application. A drain cleaner with a round wire such as the BC91015 (Store SKU # 167436) or the BC84150 (Store SKU # 157345) with 1/4 in. diameter and 15 ft. length may be more suitable for your requirements. Please remove your sink p-trap prior to using either suggested drain cleaning tool. If you have additional questions on product selection or use, please feel free to contact one of our product experts toll-free at 800-835-2200.

It is inexpensive to purchase and may save a great deal of your time. It is a tape as opposed to a spring which means it can make tighter turns. You may be able to use it without taking of the trap. Which saves time. It also means you cannot turn it to bore through serious clogs. But it will work for most of the day to day things like hair and mild grease which is what I most often have to deal with.

I tried snaking an old galvanized trap for a tub. I went down through the overflow but it wasn't getting anywhere. Went to another store and purchased an 8ft long 1/4" round cable. Chucked it into my drill and away it went. Not sure how this flat snake will do in other applications..

It is not flexible enough to go very far. I tried it on the other bathroom sink that is running fine and it again did not go very far. It also leaves a horrible metal smell on your hands. Don't waste your money. I hope Home Depot takes it back and takes it off their shelf!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more clogged sink My kitchen sink was clogged and I didn't want to spend big bucks to have a plumber come. Bought this thing and shoved it down the drain. The drain was still clogged so I took off the pea trap and shoved this thing down the pipe that went into the wall. Put everything back together and the sink drained! Success!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy & inexpensive tool as first option for sink clogs Highly recommend this tool for a first step, even before chemicals, to address sink clogs. Strong and flexible, with enough length to reach likely clog spots, I'd buy this and try it before any chemical decloggers, or at least buy both. Great for hair clogs, especially.

The product was marginally adequate, once we removed the spring at the end of the tape. It was impossible to round a corner in a pipe without doing so... I would only recommend for small clogs. If you know it's serious, buy something else.
