Product Overview

Active Ventilation Products solar powered attic fan product line, the Round Back Solar Fan, is excellent at exhausting attic spaces for shingled roofs. The solar panel provides energy to the fan on sunny days to increase the vent’s CFM over and beyond a standard non-motorized static vent. The Round Back Solar Fan is made of rust free aluminum, 8 in. Dia exhaust fan with a 2 in. collar height and 13 in. x 13 in. square flange. Its low profile design looks pleasing on shingled roofs. The Round Back Solar Fan has a solid vent cap with an inner vertical louver cylinder to keep out insects, birds, and animals. The inner vertical louver allows air to exhaust without resistance. Model RBSF-8-GR is powder coated with an electrostatic charge in green finish. The powder coating finish adheres extremely well and is more difficult to remove than wet paint which adds to the vents durability and long lasting clean appearance.

  • Excellent choice to removing radiant heat from attic spaces
  • Green powder coating finish is significantly greater at resisting scratching, chipping, and oxidation
  • Solar panel: 5 Watt, 12-Volt
  • Ventilation rule 1:300, application per sq. ft.: 200 sq. ft.
  • Net free air space: 50 sq. in.
  • Inner cylinder louver design does not allow accumulation of particle buildup as found in using an insect screen
  • 2 in. clearance between bottom of vent cap and flange
  • Built-in inner vertical louver cylinder has a 1/8 in. opening between louver blades that will keep out insects, birds, and animals while allowing air to move through the vent without resistance
  • 1/8th in. opening between the louver blades and all aluminum (“noncombustible”) material meets the requirements of California building code 706A.2 Vents to resist the intrusion of burning embers and flame through ventilation openings
  • 365 CFM at 0.1 SP
  • Helps to reduce energy costs

Does this require a roofer to install?

Does this require a roofer to install?
Asked by: interested
this is a yes a no question. It all depends on your handyman/women skills. If you are good at DIY projects and using power/batt tools you would be able to install it no worries. But remember you will be cutting a hole in your roof and if your not on the money with your installation , you could have a roof leak. So sometimes to try to save a few dollars can in up costing you more in the long run. Check with the store you are buying from, most will offer you installation for a small fee. Also the person you get to fit this fan should be bonded and have insurance , just encase there is a leak then you have someone to fall back on. But like I said at the begging, if you are good a DIY then it's not that hard to install. Also remember safety first and a roof get very hot in sun and tools get hot to the touch too. Once again safety-safety-safety. Good luck I hope this helps. Alby

Can this be installed on a metal roof (horse barn) ?

Asked by: Isabelle
yes, as long as the fans base or flashing can slide under the roofing line. Because of water flowing down hill , the fans base has to put on a under the first sheet and then over the bottom sheet. A hole will have to be cut in the roof and the base will have to screw down and seal with a water proof silicon or tar . If not wanting to cut your roof you could attach to the side wall on the sunny side of your barn with a small flashing to cover the top of the fans base. At this price you could buy two, one for the morning sun and one for the afternoon sun and mount them on the side, thus not having to cut a hole in your roof. Just food for thought. Alby

does it have an "off" switch

or does it run all the time, when ever there's sunshine? Can you block it off in winter so no heat escapes?
Asked by: mwpdx
yes, because this is a 5 watt fan you can install a on/off switch at ground level . It would be like your solar garden lights, most of them have a small on/off switch on the underside. If you don't know how , you could a handyman/electrician to help you. Or go to your local electrical outlet and they might sell you a on/off kit and tell you how or tell you of someone that could do it for you at a small cost. Hope this helps Alby
