One AA-type alkaline battery. Don't use standard heavy-duty battery. It will last over a year.

Answer:
I've had this for a number of years now and I don't recall ever changing the battery to this point. It is kept in my basement which can get cold in the winter and warm in the summer, so the temperature can fluctuate with the seasons. Battery life seems to be very efficient.

Answer:
Yes. A capacitor is within the unit to keep the temps from fluctuating quickly. Otherwise, you might not see accurate temps. A simple breeze of someone walking past it might alter the reading. The slower reading keeps it more accurate. This unit is for a room in a house. Use a wired sensor refrigerator type thermometer for that type of use.

In Summer, the device shows a 40% RH level as "High" but in Winter even a 57% RH level is shown as "OK". Why is there a difference?

Answer:
The device measures relative, not absolute, humidity. Since relative humidity depends on temperature a 40% level on a hot summer day actually contains more moisture than a 57% level on a cool winter day.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 65 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by accuwrong is about accurite these are side by side accurite meters the lower display on the meter on the right is for indoor, have look for yourself March 21, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Inconsistent, one unit to next Purchased two units. Placed side by side for several hours and they always have a 4 degree difference. One (or both) are not accurate. Wish I knew which one was wrong so could return, or simply pitch into the trash. Also, they never, ever display the temperature in even numbers, odd numbers only. That, in itself is "odd". June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Digital Version I have three of these. They are within a degree or two of temperature and within 1% of humidity. Next to a standard thermometer, it is just about the same. Someone mentioned it only shows even numbers, Not true. I see 73, 74, 75, temps. It displays every number by degree including humidity. Use a brand new alkaline battery, not a standard battery. A capacitor keeps the temps from fluctuating quickly so allow 10 minutes to adjust to ambient temp/humidity. At this price, it is not designed for super accurate readings for incubating life. Just a room's average temps/humidity. February 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by junk I used it in a incubator and had a 15% hatch rate due to inaccurate readings. I should have known better. my mistake. I'll never buy any of there products EVER again. I lost 100s of dollars. learned of its inaccuracy through a high end thermometer but it was to late by then. if accuracy doesn't matter it's fine. February 14, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great, fairly accurate, monitor The monitor has a very clear display which can be easily viewed at any distance or angle. It has a button on the back to display the temperature in either Celsius or in Fahrenheit. It also has a clip-on with a magnetic strip attached on the back which can also be turned into a stand to place the monitor in almost any part of your home. Although there is no way to calibrate the monitor, the temperature and humidity readings are fairly accurate. Compared to 2 other thermometers and tested with a hygrometer calibration kit for relative humidity, the readings were accurate most of the time but can occasionally be off by as much as 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 2% RH. Since I have only owned the product for a week, I can't say how durable the product is and if the readings can still be accurate in the long run. It does include a 1 year warranty but according to the manual, you must register the product online to be eligible for the warranty. June 3, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Good for humidity, NOT for temperature The humidity reader is only 4% low according to the salt test and is extremely sensitive to change, though the "high, low, okay" meter seems completely random with no noticeable pattern between the ratio of heat to humidity. Not that big of a deal. I'm very satisfied with the accuracy of the humidity reader given the price. The temperature reader, though, is a mess. Its at least +6 degrees too high despite the +/- 2 degrees manufacturer claim and so slow to change that it absolutely cannot be trusted to give an accurate reading. Other thermometers in the house drop by 5 degrees and this one stays the same even when the room feels considerably colder. I couldn't get the temperature on this thing to go down except by placing it directly against a cold window with a winter draft and even then it read 75 degrees, which is a very high estimate for the part of the US I live in. As some others have said, mine only changed by increments of two degrees, not one. Unless mine is defective, I would not recommend this product as a thermometer. If you only need it for humidity, its a good purchase. Otherwise, find something else. I would say you get what you pay for, but it seems like even the more expensive Accurite thermometers have similar complaints. January 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Clear display, appears to work good I purchased this for a music room to ensure proper humidity levels for guitars. It took about 10 minutes to adjust to the room. I almost returned it at first because the temperature appeared stuck on 81 degrees. However, after about 10 minutes the temperature was dead on, based on my IR thermometer. I have no method to assess the accuracy of the hygrometer, but based on other's reviews, I expect it be accurate. If I move it into the a/c vent air path, the humidity drops quickly, so it appears to have good sensitivity and responsiveness. I care about the humidity, not the temperature, so the fact that larger first number is the humidity and not the temperature is perfect for my use. I will likely purchase another one to take traveling in my guitar case. I just purchased this today, so I cannot comment on long term quality, but out of the box, I have no complaints. It does not have a back-light, but then I have no need to read it in the dark. The high/low record resets automatically every 24 hours based on the time of day you installed the battery. September 18, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JUST WHAT I NEEDED I purchased two of these after reading the customer reviews because I need to play closer attention to the humidity in our home. I have one in the garden level basement and the other one up stairs. They are very easy to use and read and they are giving me the information I need to keep the humidity at acceptable levels.
