Customer Questions & Answers

When placing two of these side by side, how much frame (width) do I need between them?

Can the fins overlap?
Asked by: CampGrrl
Hello Campgrrl, You should have at least the space created by 2 pcs. of 2x4= 3" but 3pcs. of 2x4 is preferable. The nailing fins should not be overlapped. Thank you for your inquiry. Charlotte of the Home Depot Community.

I like the j channel for good waterproof mesh with siding but i'm nervous about how they would look ganged up in pairs and triples.

What is the difference between new construction windows and replacement windows?

Asked by: James
Thank you for your inquiry. The biggest difference between these windows is the way they are installed. New Construction windows are installed from the exterior using the nailing fin. Replacement windows are installed from the interior by using the existing opening and securing the window by screwing through the jamb. Does anyone know the exact rough opening for this 24"x38" window?

The specs seem to show two different rough openings. I'd like to frame it in since the window won't be here for a week. Thanks.
Asked by: RO101
Windows are measured in two different ways: "Rough Opening" (RO) & "glass size". As indicated by the second response, the RO on the 24x38 is 26.25 in. x 41.25 in., just as it is posted within the Specifications tab for that window. These are the numbers you'll need to frame the window properly. Never frame a window until you have a definite answer on the RO number, and even when you do know the number, always allow yourself a little extra in case the hole isn't perfectly square or the framing wood is slightly warped; usually an extra 1/2" added to the width & height is adequate, but the bigger the window, the more care you'll need to take on measuring & squaring the frame. The 24x38 measurement is the glass size, meaning it has 6.33 sq/ft of potential lighting space. This number is used by your local building inspector to calculate the minimum requirements for emergency egress from the room, potential sun-light space for the room, and heat loss/gain (if your building inspector is advanced enough). The first response was definitely incorrect and judging by use of the "cut back" phrase, was likely intended as the number required for a replacement window, not a new installation window such as this style.

I've installed literally hundreds of windows, many of the vinyl new construction type like this window.. I was both surprised and thrilled with the quality of these windows FOR THE PRICE. They are comparable to other vinyl windows by other mainstream manufacturers and I would not hesitate to purchase these again for a budget job where economy is a focus. They sport several features that make them more desirable than other windows I've installed and are stocked readily in most stores. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 33 Year Old American Craft Home Depot Windows Still Look New Six years ago I bought a house with these windows. A few of the plastic pieces had broken on the lower tilt window. However, although I was the second owner, American Craft ( Part of Anderson Windows) sent me replacement parts for free as long as I paid for shipping ($8). I was so impressed this company had the original purchase documents from the first owner from Dec. 1993, in 2016!!! And not only did they send me free replacement parts, but they set up an account in their system. So a few days later when the handyman broke a screen, I quickly called American Craft and they are sending me a replacement ( the handyman paid). This is a very efficient company. Right at the very top of the window( turn your head up) is a label identifying the owner and Home Depot, as well as the numbers needed to identify the product to American Craft. It was still there after 33 years. I guess this says something about the seal. Also the American Craft customer service person, e-mailed me the instructions for how to replace these pieces, and as a 60 year old woman I could do it by myself! Also, the springs along the edge of the window have a white plastic piece that rotates sideways to hold the spring action in place, so it is easy to put the window back in at an angle. Once both ends are in, you level them and tilt the window up and it goes back in place. So easy!! I noticed everything can be easily replaced if it wears out, like the brushes that help seal the windows and the rubber sweep thing at the bottom of the window. As for the screens, you need to watch a video on youtube to get the idea. There are tension pieces to one side, so from the outside of the window, you push to compress the tension pieces, to slide the window screen out. Its not easy, but I did it myself, and I have arthritis in my hands. I love these 33 year old windows which look brand new!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks are not everything The widows look good and are energy efficient. BUT, they are very difficult to put in if you remove them from the frame. I have had 4 of the 10 windows spring release due to the screw at the top popping out. One released from the bottom and shot up putting a hole in the frame at the top. I believe it has more to do with the weight of each section than the design itself. If I had to do it again I would save the 100.00 per window and go with the single hung. Also, I wish they had used a black screen. The grayish one supplied obstructs a great view, especially in the sun.

The weather stripping along the edges of the bottom and top sashes where they meet is letting in drafts. On a cold windy day you can feel the breeze at the corners where they two sashes meet. I replaced 10 windows with these and all have the same problem in varying degrees. One window you can see daylight out one side of the top sash. I checked and the window is square. Contacted the company and they sent a guy out. He aggress with me, ie. poor workmanship.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Windows The windows came in ahead of schedule and packaged very well. They are replacements for the junk windows that are in home. Installation was a breeze. I made some window seals and trimmed inside and they look great.
