Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Darth Very Happy with the Splitter
Did a lot of research and finally chose the Atiens 27 ton. There was an issue receiving the white glove service for delivery, but HD took care of the problem. Splitter is shipped well and arrived with no trouble. About 1 hour in unpacking and getting it ready to go. Engine did not need oil, and I added about a gallon of hydraulic fluid. Started on 2nd pull and let it warm up. Rechecked all fluids after running the piston a dozen times and added another quart of hydraulic fluid. I have split about 3 cords and so far it's flawless. Easy to operate, smooth engine and fuel efficent. Highly recommend.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by laxin213 Gravely / Ariens 22T vs 27T log splitter comparison - chose the 27T
I liked arien's splitters - ... The question was then which model. I visited my local Ariens dealer and the sales guy there had the 22T at $1399 and the 27T at $1749. Dealer noted the weight difference being significant 367lb vs 498lb thus the 27T was deemed by Ariens to have a more professional frame and the 22T more a consumer grade frame. Also the 22T has the 4.5hp Subaru and the 27T had a 5.7hp Subaru. He noted that the 22T had a newer vertical shaft crankshaft and the 27T had a more "time tested" horizontal shaft design and the same engine they've been using for a long time. So he was really pushing the more expensive unit - go figure.
I checked Home Depot's website and their price blew my local dealer's price out of the water. So I bought from 1800 Home depot after they price matched another web site for an even lower price! I ordered and it was shipped
I'll detail the freight process as I experienced it. I got an email 2 days after I placed my order. It said a carrier called NEMF has the item and is shipping from their depot in NJ to my local dealer in upstate NY. Home Depot has a white glove delivery serivce they call it where it goes factory --> local dealer ---> me. It's supposed to be no additional cost. I figured I'd get the splitter dry on a crate in my driveway and I'd have to check/fill all fluids etc but it looks like the dealer is doing that I - didn't even know. I'll update when the shinny orange splitter arrives.
HD it sent to my local ariens dealer. They uncrated it, filled it with all fluids and tested it. I actually saw the paperwork and HD paid them $82.50 to do that. The dealer then called to schedule a delivery but I just told them I'd pick it up. I ordered separate the work table and the cylinder handle and bolted those on. I picked it up from the dealer a couple weeks ago.
It's split everything I've thrown at it so far: fresh cut 34" Ash rounds, old dried 30"+ knotty oak, down to smaller maple and pine. Real crotchy stuff to. The vertical feature is great - then you're not lifting monster rounds. One thing I don't like is the placement of the hoses. On horizontal, I've hit hoses and the hydro oil filter with splits.
I added an hour meter to mine, the digital no wiring kind. Also added the work table (with stick on grippers from harbor freight). a hydro cylinder handle.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Larry Awesome splitter !!
This thing really saved my back, as you are in a fully upright position when you operate it.Starts every time with one or two pulls, and went right thru anything I gave it to split at just over half throttle !! I would recommend this model without any hesitation !! Love it.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by purchaser Pretty Good purchase
Let me first say that I purchased this online through HD, because they don't carry them in the store
(at least not in my area). Looks can be very deceiving when purchasing from a picture. I actually looked around at the local hardware, department and farm supply stores that all carry splitters you can walk up to and see. I chose the Ariens model mainly because the overall reviews for it was better than the other brands. For a 27 ton unit, it is smaller (frame wise) than the others. When I first saw this splitter when they were unloading it, I thought to myself, it's not nearly as big as I expected.
We checked the fluid levels, went over the controls and started it up. Run it up to 1/2, 3/4 and full throttle. Cycled the cylinder 3 or 4 times, shut it down and re-checked the fluid levels. Some of the other reveiws stated they were low on hydraulic fluid after cycling. Not this one, the dealer must have already done this and topped it off. I went straight to splitting wood. I had some oak, maple, pine & cedar, all ranging from about 8 to 14" with lots of knots. All split with no problem. The green pine did not split very well when it came to the larger logs with knots, it just cut right through them. I was very impressed. I then took this out to the farm where I had more oak & maple. Not as many knots, but the logs were 10 to 18" in dia. Split it all at about 3/4 throttle with no problem and again it really impressed me. I've only had this a few weeks and only split about 6 ricks of wood, but very satisfied so far. I would recommend this to a friend or anyone looking to split wood on a lower scale like me. I use about 10 - 12 ricks of wood per year and I believe this unit will last me for many years.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Michiganman1 Great machine
While performance is the most important factor in my purchase, this is a very nice looking machine as well. The Subaru engine is one of the most quiet small engines I have ran. The splitter has plenty of power. Perhaps the best feature and what sold me on the purchase is the forward location of the engine and the convenient working area. While slightly more money than other brands of this size, it is worth the money.

great log splitter goes thru knots oak and hedge apple with no problem. the teeth on the bottom plate bite the logs do not slide out as the wedge digs in. the only thing i would change is the lever needs to be turn to the side it gets in the way of your head when working in the upright position

Why have I never met anyone with one of these before, why have I got three axes, why did I bother with a 7Ton Log Splitter!.
To the last point, I bought it to deal with smaller rounds. Yes it's great on smaller rounds that are seasoned wood and pine but then attempt splitting freshly cut Californian oak round and prepare to be very disappointed. My axe bounces off them and the 7ton just made a dent and tripped the circuit.
I finally got so frustrated that I took the plunge after a lot of research.. Purchased from Home Depot and took delivery this weekend, the instructions are fine, the packing was a bear to remove but once I got it up and working I put it to task on a pile of rounds I had been collecting.. Pine, Oak, Madrone from pieces that were light to rounds that were too heavy to lift and it sailed through the lot..
OK, I have not lived with it for long but per the picture below, splitting and stacking took approx and hour and its two deep!
If you have the room then buy one, you will not be unhappy!
