I purchased this product this year and so far I am satified with its performance. Mounting this on my Ariens snowthrower was very easy the fit is great and sturdy. The control lever works well and allows you to regulate the amount of salt dropped. As the salt drops is disperses out the width of the snowthrower so when making multipul passes you aren't overlapping and wasting salt. By using this product I use less salt on my drive than I did in the past. My drive is about 1200 sq.ft. and I use about two/thirds of the container to salt the entire drive. Though I would not consider this product a necessity it is a great gadget for the the handyman that has it all.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Andrec Nice science project
First, congratulations to the kids that invented it. It was a very interesting science project. The main problem is, it's still a student project. The only thing Ariens added to it , is the nice design and their marketing power. They should have added some engineering . This thing would not spread anything but perfectly round and expensive ice melt pellets. Even there it would barely do it. Should you try any ice melt that does not fit these criteria, and it would jam. I tried it with various ice melt material, and finally decided to return the unit. I suggest you do not waste your time. Either Ariens redesign the thing or they should stop selling it under their well respected brand name.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by zbon special expensive salt required.
Regular Salt will not work in this. I installed and it doesn't work. Nothing in the description says special Salt is needed so it won't clog. I respect the way this was developed but do not like the missing info

>>> Spot Spreader <<<, it says it on the box…of course it is not for large driveways and parking lots. It does exactly what it was meant to do and does it well.

First, I commend Ariens for supporting the two young students who invented this thing. But it should have ended there. Do you realize that the size of this "spreader" is 7x7x8 INCHES? If you only need enough ice melt that you could carry in a shoe box, why in the world would you need a snowblower? You could buy a childs pail and shovel to remove the snow and then fill said pail with ice melt to finish the job. As they say on TV, "common man"...what are you thinking.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by dergibog Ariens doesn't even fit an Ariens
Unreal. I bought this to put on my compact 24 2010 model and like another reviewer pointed out, it doesn't fit on all modles. If you have to use the "clamp" to attach it you are in for a boat load of frusteration. I even asked about this on their facebook page and they admit it doesn't fit. Good job Ariens. I wonder why nobody buys "American" anymore. Hilarious.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dreamnevil Small but does a great job
Bought this last year, used it with the blower..works great!
I realize it's not going to carry a bucket full of sand/salt,
but it does what it's supposed to do, sand/salt while clearing snow.
One shot. Done! I have a small driveway that I clear and a path to the shed..does the trick every time.
I have to fill it every 2nd storm.. not bad
