Customer Questions & Answers

before I use Barn & fence paint do I need a primer

Asked by: Anonymous
Dear Ed, A primer is only required if you are painting a "bleeding" wood like Redwood, Cedar, Cypress or other “bleeding” woods. These woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore if necessary, prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer to reduce these stains. Below are the preparation and application instructions for using our Barn & Fence Paint. PREPARATION Remove stains caused by mold and mildew with a mold and mildew stain removing product. Previously painted, stained or clear sealed wood: Sand all glossy surfaces. If surface is in good condition, apply directly over clean, dry surface. If the latex or oil-based finish has started to crack, peel or flake, use a product such as BEHR PREMIUM™ NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper on wood to remove the coating. Rinse thoroughly. Follow with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Scrub, rinse, and allow to dry completely. New, weathered, pressure treated or uncoated wood: Place cloth duct tape in random areas on the bare wood. Press the tape firmly then quickly remove it. If wood fibers or debris are pulled onto the tape, the wood surface is not sound and additional preparation is required as follows: Clean surface with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM NO. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper. Rinse. Follow with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM NO. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner at full strength to remove mill glaze and/or loose wood fibers, dirt and other debris. Rinse and allow to dry. APPLICATION Use when air and surface temperature are 50-90˚F (10-32˚C). Do not apply in direct sunlight or if rain is expected within 24 hours. Wood surfaces must be completely dry. When working with more than one container of the same color, intermix to ensure color uniformity. Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other “bleeding” woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer to reduce these stains. Apply with a nylon/polyester brush on smooth surfaces. On rough-sawn or textured wood apply with a 3/4" long nap roller or high quality airless sprayer. For airless spraying use a .015" tip. Keep a wet edge to reduce lapping and help control color uniformity. Always back-brush or back-roll during all application methods. Two coats may be necessary for complete hiding. Apply the second coat only after the first coat has thoroughly dried. Thank you for the inquiry!

Would this be good for painting gutters, vinyl siding and soffets?

Asked by: sjewell
Hi sjewell, We don't recommend applying our Band & Fence Paint to vinyl gutters, siding, and soffets. I suggest using our Premium Plus Ultra Exterior or Marquee Exterior paint lines instead, which can be applied to vinyl surfaces. They can be viewed here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-Plus-Ultra-1-gal-Ultra-Pure-White-Flat-Exterior-Paint-485001/100542557, http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-MARQUEE-1-gal-4450-Ultra-Pure-White-Flat-Exterior-Paint-445001/203936135. 1-gal. white Exterior Barn and Fence Paint is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 114.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good paint for rough wood. My exterior garage door was in bad condition, the top layer of wood was delaminated at the bottom from the weather and lack of maintenance. I pulled off the loose layer, brushed the door off with a wisk broom and painted it. I figured no one actually washes and sands a barn before repainting it. The paint is thick and filled in a lot of the voids and it dried quickly. I will give it another coat on the exterior side later but it already looks so much better. Clean up is easy with soap and water. This old lady is very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great paint I used this paint for the trim on an outdoor storage building. The paint covers well and looked great. It cleans up very easily with soap and water. I would certainly buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good value for basic white exterior paint. You can't buy "whitewash" any more it would seem. Nowadays, whitewash is a trendy fashion statement and you can a LOT pay for a name that used be synonymous with Tom Sawyer painting Aunt Polly's fence. If you need a good flat white paint just for decent coverage, this is your product. I haven't even had to start the second coat yet...I will, eventually, but the coverage is good enough that I can do other chores and come back to the second coat when I have time and not have it look like a second rate job. And, I had blasted the old paint off with a pressure washer before using this paint, so I was basically painting bare wood. I will be buying more.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Washes off easily The only reason I would recommend this product is that I have NOT been able to find any other paint that is 'animal' friendly. This paint does NOT cover well and washes off too easily. We painted the barn walls with it. When rinsing down the stalls it comes off and we only painted 1 month ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for outside painting The biggest plus is It's primer and paint in one. Easy to apply and it stays very good. Price bellow average. It's ideal for fence and other outside structures. How I know? My neighbors showed me 10+ years old barn and 8 years old fence painted with Exterior Barn and Fence paint. Bough structures look nice still. My fence went through one rain/snow season and looks like newly painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Paint in the USA Because we live in a relatively harsh environment in the Rockies, we go through paint like we go through water. This barn and fence paint lasts at least 3 times longer than any other we've ever used. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

This is high quality exterior paint for those things that will face the elements and need extra protection. It's a little more pricey than the Lowes type barn and fence paint. I was impressed with the texture of the paint.
