The week after Labor Day would be the right time for your area. Spring is not a great time. Here is a pic of my lawn planted around the same time in Philadelphia. This was taken early november

Answer:
for a more even and consistent coverage a definately recommend a spreader. Even a handheld one would do a better job then just tossing seed by hand. If it is a small area just do it by hand it will be good enough. You don't need to go crazy and totally plaster the area with seed. Youtube can be a good source for info. search for something like how much grass seed to apply.

I bought 2 50lb bags but it doesn't say anywhere on the bags how much seed to spread for overseeding or new lawn. I will be using Scotts broadcast spreader, what setting should I use to spread this on my lawn for overseeding? My lawn is roughly 30000 sq ft.

Hello. I also used two bags with a Scotts spreader and had good results. Dial max is 15, had it set at 7, so I'd say the setting is about half way.

Hi kkvb in Texas.
With any new grass seed, you want to give it the best chance of germinating and growing. Having dogs walk across the area where you just planted your new seed, peeing and pooping would be extremely detrimental to the growth of your new seed.
After seeding your lawn area, you will want to keep your pets off the newly germinated grass for at least 2 months to give the grass a chance to grow and thicken up.
When the dogs urinate on the grass it will burn the grass blades and kill any newly sprouted grass seeds.
You may want to re-seed your yard in sections to give each area a chance to grow and become established before letting the dogs play in the yard or set up an area just for them to do their daily business.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best grass seed I have used I lost over half my yard last year and again this year before I found out I had a lawn fungus.i planted this seed and Scott's tall fescue at same time about 3 weeks ago this seed came up in 4 days the Scott's well it's yet to be seen.and it's about the same price be bad homedepot does not sell this in store available only on line ,it takes a couple weeks for shipping.but well worth the wait,I have wasted a lot of money in last two years on high dollar grass seed and not see much results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I've seen in Virginia Coastal Area This seed is very small and covers a much larger area than a tall fescue. It germinated quickly and thrived during the winter months. This is my second purchase to over seed the majority of my lawn and not just the areas that are hard to grow grass in. It's the best I've seen for Virginia and I have tried many.

I rototilled my yard in September and planted my seed on Oct. 9th. I covered with hay and watered twice a day for an hour. Within a week the seed had germinated and after 2 weeks my lawn looks amazing!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product Did a fall planting to my lawn (large area) which was in a just ok condition right before a 3-4 day rain. Had a noticeably thicker lawn within 8 or 9 days. Color is an emerald green and looks real good after the first cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product!!! I've never started a lawn from seed, so I did my homework... found this stuff on the HD website, it's not available in my store... I checked out this company and found them very reputable, renowned for quality, and they're "local" from just outside my old hometown... they specialize in field turfs and tough, durable grass in pastures and what not... I wanted something that could take some abuse but still be soft and beautiful at the same time... after a hard afternoon's prep work I threw out the seed as instructed and put a thin cover of peat moss over it, then kept it good and moist for a week... I had a full lawn of baby sprouts after one week, it's now been four weeks and it's lush and thick and a beautiful dark green and ready for it's first mowing... I still have a ton of seed with the backyard still to go, but even then I'll have enough left over for any potential patches next Spring... highly recommended!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed with the coverage and high yield. I needed to till my entire yard last fall and was too late to seed anything but a winter grass and this fit the bill. 2 bags of this seed covered a large area in my backyard. I watched it grow for about three weeks and it turned a barren waste land into a field of Irish green that lasted all winter long here in Memphis, TN. It is still green and happy, but will die soon due to the heat we experience here in the summer, but erosion control was my goal and this performed AWESOME!
