I kept one set for myself because of the price. These bits do a a great job ripping through wood fast and efficiently. They do not make a very "clean" hole. Be sure to have enough power in your drill because these will dig and dig until it's all the way through. I'd also recommend them if you are drilling in front of anything sensitive, like electrical wire or plumbing. Normal spade bits need more force, these pull themselves through so there's less "knock through" at the end of the hole.

They should be called banshees, because that would be the word I would use to describe them. When they are sharp, nothing drills faster than them. Just don't hit a nail or screw, if you do, that's the end of the bit. If they weren't so vulnerable to severe damage when hitting metal in the wood, I would have given them 5 stars. These are the fastest drilling wood bits I have ever used, and I have used many. Being an electrical contractor, I drill all the time through wood, and I dull bits all the time. On the job, I will sharpen my ship auger type bits and my speed, or spade bits, but these cannot be effectively sharpened. On my truck, I always keep a set or two of these.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It'll drill a hole alright... I'd recommend this product only if you were using it for landscaping work with a cord. I used them for my deck. Due to the design of the bit, the 1/2" bit drilled a hole big enough that the 1/2" carriage bolt had play. "Not cool, Robert Frost." The next size down was way too small. It also chewed up the entry side of the board a bit. They'd be disastrous for furniture or fine woodworking. I used my cordless impact driver, and due to the design of the bit, it drained the battery in short order. The center screw tip keeps you from pulling the bit out midway through the hole in order to remove shavings. You have to put the bit in reverse in order to remove it. It does bore through the board in record time, but due to the amount of friction, it drains the battery in record time as well.

These bits really go after boring a hole quick and easy regardless of the type of wood (pine, poplar, spruce, etc). I have found low speed is better than high speed as the bit head is like a screw drilling through the wood. They will twist the drill out of your hand! These bits are much better than the typical flat spade bit. I've been remodeling an old house built with assorted woods and thicknesses and these bits do the job in old hardwood!

I also have a single pack 1-1/2 inch spade bit, the same as those in the set. I was using it for the first time with a bit extension, drilling into a 2x4. Within a few minutes, the bottom tip broke and is now stuck in the extension. Now I'm questioning the quality of those in the set which I also needed to use. I have decided not to open the set and to return it.

Its really the best way to make holes for wire, cable, plumbing in 2x lumber with a cordless drill or impact. No, its not a pretty looking exit hole most of the time, but they are faster than regular spade and auger bits. These don't do too well on deep holes, the long bosh augers are the best for that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best spade bits made Self tapping spade bits make drilling holes through material nearly effortless. On my cordless drill i can focus on keeping the hole area straight and level and let the drill bit do the work. Now my freehand drilling is as straight as doing it on a drillpress.

Once the bit is turning, it gets pulled into the wood quite fast. No pushing needed. That's fine if you want to go completely through the material but not fine if you don't.
