Questions & Answers

cartridge hot and cold very hard to turn

Asked by: Bernie
Bernie, (Way old post I know, but...) Are you commenting on the new one or old? If old, yep you need a new cartridge valve, but need to identify which one you currently have. If your comment is for a new valve hard to turn, back off on the chrome sleeved nut until it gets easier.

can I find this Brass Craft Mixet MXT07 4-1/2 in. hot/Cold Post-1968 Stem with Retainer
Asked by: Ben
Ben, Does your old valve cartridge have this retainer? You can most likely see if it does or doesn't by removing just the chrome dish cover plate. Mine (1987 build) did not have the retainer, but if you need it, reuse the old one.

Removing the stem

How do I remove the stem once installed. The stem where screw A is supposed to go is broke - I will need to replace. Is the piece replaceable
Asked by: Jumper0913
I purchased the stem remover and the instructions made it a quick and easy job. I didn't have to quess what I was doing. You will need to replace the entire stem if the portion where the screw is located is broken. Be sure to remove the clip that holds the stem before trying to pull it out. Otherwise it will be impossible to remove without damaging the entire fixture.

By the time I turned off the water to take it out and carry it to Home Depot to match up, it was one hour total of drive time, shopping time and install time. It was easy, helps having a crescent wrench and pliers. On the package they note: "be sure to install with the red marking facing up". Otherwise your hot and cold will be on the wrong side when you turn the handle. I saw somebody commented that the piece was built wrong......I think not, but assume that they didn't read the instructions..... I suggest looking it up on line to see where it is in the store before you go. It can be hard to find. At this point, my wife is happy, so that means I'm happy.....

So after 30 years of use, our shower valve was giving us some grief with the temp adjustment lever, as in like "is this thing gonna break off?" I knew my valve unit was a Mixet, but which one? YouTube saved the day on that one (thanks to the plumber doing the install for the site "The Shack"), but Home Depot's website went beyond that. Once I knew the part number, using my local stores website, I knew, 1) they had them in stock, 2) I knew which isle (29) and which bay (10) and bingo...I had one same day. With a Phillips screw driver, a 12" crescent wrench and dab of Vaseline (for the O-ring), I went to work. I kid you not, the whole removal, and installation of the new valve completely took all of 30 minutes. Sweet! No guessing, no going back with the old part while the house water was turned off...all things worked out well on this one. Now I'll be waiting for the wife's compliment later on.

When first installed, it had the hot running on the cold side and vice versa. I had to take apart and reconfigure to make it work properly. I'm assuming this was just a fluke with this one valve otherwise I wouldn't recommend this at all. Glad Mixet has a replacement so I didn't have to pay a plumber to install a totally new faucet system.
