I have only used closed louver shutters and I read from a question on here from Builders edge that these are open louver shutters (although another customer answered they are closed?) so curious if they hide the surface (siding, brick etc) thats under the shutter or if you can see the surface under it? I dont want anything showing from under the shutter like a closed louver shutter would do.

These ARE open louver shutters. However, it's dark behind the shutters so it may very well not be noticeable at all as the louvers are fairly close-spaced.

They are open louvers. On first floor use, you won't really see behind the shutters. But on a second floor, you can see behind them if you look up from below.

I have some damaged plastic louvered shutters on my home now. I am planning to custom paint them with a richer blue over the prefinished blue shutter. I see you offer a paintable shutter.... what is the difference between the two ?

Can i prime for plastic and paint the existing colored ones and purchase only paintable ones for the shutters that need replacing?
I am looking at product code 010140055030 for the paintable shutters.

The paintable version you need to paint, whatever color you desire, the pre-colored versions are not recommended for painting

I went with paintable (which I primed, then covered with two paint coats) because I wanted them to match my other shutters perfectly AND in case I wish to change colors in the future...plus, I didn't want these shutters to appear to be 'plastic'. I suppose if one was planning to replace all the shutters on the house and was 'locked in' on what the color will be forever, one could go with the pre-colored versions. But painting, while it takes a little time, seems to me to be the way to go for the reasons given above. Read Less

Thank you for your interest in Builders Edge. Our shutters that are colored have the color molded through, and have a UV stabilizer that paint will not adhere to.

I didn't like the plastic fasteners (screws) which came with these, so I created my own faster with stainless steel screws and drilled a few holes in the shutters...pretty easy to do.
For brick, you'll have to get a masonry drill bit along with 'concrete' fasteners. Might sound scary, but it's pretty easy also. I suggest you explain your need and ask someone at Home Depot what you'll need to do and Read More

Answer:
Color shutters are made of polypropylene, which is a nonporous material and cannot be painted. Only the paintable (polystyrene) shutteres can be painted.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent! If you're looking for a fairly inexpensive shutter replacement that will last (I expect) virtually forever, this is the way to go. Obviously, size needs will vary for individual applications...so assuming you've found the size you need, let me comment on the product itself: I purchased the 'paintable' version for two main reasons: (1) I really didn't want the shutters to look like plastic...so painting them gives them the look of wood (matching the remaining shutters on my house), and (2) the 'white' version simply wasn't white enough to match my other shutters. (Unless you're replacing ALL your shutters, the 'paintable' version is the way you'll want to go for 'color matching' purposes...let alone if you should wish to change colors in the future.) These are light and almost 'cheap' looking out of the package, so be ready for this feeling if you decide to purchase these. That said, they do the job very well. The grain molded into the plastic makes them indistinguishable from real wood and, once painted, I would challenge anyone to tell the difference between these and a real wood shutter just by looking at them. Plus, because of the plastic material used, the slats won't be warping over time so they should continue to look good for a long, long time. One caution: You'll have to be a little creative and handy in determining how to fasten these to your house. It's fairly easy to figure out an alternative solution to the fasteners provided (which are plastic and appear to me like they will not hold well in a storm, despite requiring drilling of several fairly large holes into the house). I personally wouldn't trust the large plastic 'screws' that come with the units. But again, determining an alternative fastening method for your personal needs isn't all that difficult. My own need was to replace a single pair of old wood shutters that were falling apart. Without a doubt, I will be purchasing these for the rest of my house (assuming I can get the right sizes) over time as the need arises. I wish they came in sizes wider than 15" (maybe 18-24") but for the most part, these fit the bill. May 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by So flimsy!! These are just awful- I slid them half way out of the box and then immediately slid them back in and returned them. If you want flimsy plastic shutters that look like they are rejects from the lego factory, then these will be your favorite thing. Not at all what I wanted. I will make my own out of wood! Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Shutter as described Product is as described. Takes paint well, 1 coat with Bear Paint. Shutters are delicate, need to be cautious with installation, that being said, they look great. Once installed, they are going nowhere. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, nice look and value These are molded shutters with individual slotted louvers, so they look very nice. These are not stamped out of a plastic sheet as you see with really cheap plastic shutters. The surface has nice woodgrain look which adds to its appearance. I purchased the unpainted model so I can match the trim on the house. I primed and painted them, with hope they'll hold up for the long run. Ease of installation installation received lower marks in my score. They provide ribbed plastic posts that get pushed into holes drilled into the exterior wall. Those are ok for now but I'm not too sure of their durability to winds over time. Wondering if I'll have to use better fasteners eventually. I also suspect the fasteners may be one-time use, to be replaced if I ever have to remove the shutters temporarily. October 17, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Shutters The shutters were easily paintable and matched the standard size and look I already had. October 6, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good but priced to high easy to paint but its a flimsy Shudder (thought for the price it would be thicker) and I dont get why it cost so much compared to other shudders..but it was the only style I could find that came close to matching my existing shudders. And again easy to paint so matching color to my existing shudders was a breeze compared to painting a colored shudder. July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fun DIY with shutters the shutters arrived quickly and were easy to paint and install. They look great but are a little flimsy so need to be well screwed into the exterior wall. June 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good buy The shutters are great. Enhances the house's appearance. May 21, 2013
