How do you deactivate the smoke detector?

I'm confused on how you deactivate the alarm. In the instructions it says to clean the smoke detector yearly by taking it off the mounting plate and wiping it down as well as blowing out/vacuuming the detector, but I thought it deactivated when you removed it from the mounting plate. I can't find any info online on what exactly it means to deactivate the smoke detector. Is it ok to remove the detector from the mounting plate without causing it to deactivate? How do you deactivate it?

There is a button on the side of the smoke alarm that gets pushed in to activate the alarm. When you turn the alarm onto the mounting ring that pushes the button up or in. When you turn it the other way you deactivate it by letting the button come back down or out. When turning the alarm on to the ring you can feel 11 tiny catches or teeth. When you get to 6 going either way the next one will activate or Read More

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 152 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product. Need to clarify how the unit get de-activated and how to re-activate? Otherwise it seems to be working fine. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Installation is very easy I just purchased 5 and installed them. Each took maybe 10 minutes tops to install each one. Just twist onto the bracket and that activates it with a chirp. I purchased these since they have the 10 year battery life. After reading some of the reviews that is the major problem with them. So far I'm satisfied with the way they get installed. If I have a problem later with the batteries then I'll be back on to give it a different review. August 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad product Bought one of these about a year ago. The "issue" date on the product is 2015 May 08. Started beeping and then alarm went off every few minutes. Couldn't shut if off with the hush button so had to deactivate, which kills the system permanently. Other reviews show this happens to them and battery does not last anything close to 10 years. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Random Hush Beep I purchase 5 of these units at first. 3 were defective and would random beep in the middle of the night. It is like the Hush Button is pushed or fails. I noticed the date codes for the defective units were Sep and Oct 2015. The date code Dec 23 , 2015 seemed to work until last night. These units are 4 weeks old and I was woken up twice last night with the random Hush Beep. Returned to Home Depot today. This seems to be a problem with the 10 year lithium battery units be they First Alert or Kidde. June 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Inexpensive Smoke Detector; Easy to Install We live in a condo and were required to add two smoke detectors with the 10-year lithium batteries. We received them in just a few days. They were very easy to install, and the fire marshal's inspector signed off on them. June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great value on these smoke detectors These are the most affordable units and very easy to put up May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by install it and your done for 10 yrs as an apartment manager, it is essential that smoke detectors always work. tenants do not always replace the battery. that's where this product comes in and solves multiple problems. with a 10 year battery life, self-contained it never needs service. fire inspectors passed this product at once.it installs in minutes and activates at once and completes a self-test and your done. I have 25 of these installed and have never had any problems or issues...I would recommend this product to everyone. dave June 4, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This product is easy to install and can be safe for up to 10 years. This device will save on changing batteries for up to 10 years. Now we will not have to worry if we forgot about the time of year. May 13, 2014
