Can I use this instead of the porcelain tile thin-set for 12x12 porcelain tiles?

Can I use this instead of the porcelain tile thin-set for 12x12 porcelain tiles?
Asked by: bikerchick
Yes you can. That will work fine with porcelain tile. The only situation where I wouldn't recommend this product is if you are using Schluter Company's ditra or kerdi. In that case a non- modified thinset is specified by Schluter.

can i use versabond to set 8"x48" plank tile over 3/4" plywood o do i need to use hardibacker first ?

Asked by: diyhomeowner
IMHO, I would never install a plank tile over plywood (especially one 48" long) without beefing up the surface with 1/2" Hardibacker. Flex is your enemy here. Imagine laying out one of those tiles on a normal-pile carpet and then stepping on it. Guess what would happen? Laying tile is like packing a parachute -- you can get away with less for awhile, or maybe even longer, but eventually shortcuts will catch up with you.

can this product be used to set ceramic tiles (16 x 16) over existing linoleum floor?

I have never attempted this and need relevant information before I attempt it.

Yes it can be utilized for 16 x 16 tiles (depending on the tile material as it is not for all types of tile.)

I don't have anything to compare this product to except what I've seen on TV. This was my first tile job every, but everything went smoothly with this thin-set. I was actually very pleasantly surprised at how long it stayed pliable. After mixing one large batch to finish most of my bathroom project, I had to create a 2nd smaller batch over 2 hours later after having used up all of the first batch over the first 2 hours. I did not use the entire back in my first mix per the instructions, so that may have kept the mix usable longer. I used about 80% of the bag in 6 quarts in my first batch.

VersaBond worked great for me in cementing some loose tiles on a shower floor last week. I mixed a small batch per the instructions, and it quickly turned from a pile of wet powder into a useful, smooth, creamy cement. I could not use a mastic or other organic tile cement because the tiles were going on the floor. The VersaBond was easy to mix and easy to use. Mixing took only about five minutes with an old drill. Cleaning up the mixer was fairly easy with running water, a brush, and a small pick. You can see the dramatic improvement in the shower's appearance in the pictures below.

It does dry quickly, so make sure that you mix it a few times during your use. I would recommend mixing it half a bag at a time. The bag was not entirely accurate about the amount of square footage it would cover. We used the recommend trowel and still needed a few extra bags. The adhesion was quick and did not require a lot of adjustment with the tile. It allowed for floating of tile relatively well. The consistency was appropriate and easy to get on the trowel. I will be using this product again for my next tile project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I have used the gray and the white on project jobs, and not disappointed at all. I had one project tiling a shower with 18 inch tile. So I tiled the wall and had to remove one as soon as Iput it on the wall. I almost had to break it to remove it, While this morter was wet. I had to tile overhead in this same job but Now, don't get me wrong, I was alittle worried about it falling on my head but once I pushed them into place, they did not move! Highly recommend! And the price is perfect!

GOOD PRODUCT - AND WORKS GREAT AS WHITE WASH I used this as a wall whitewash for a basement wall and it worked great. Why is because I was fixing a moist area with mold problem and heard to use DryLok. DL+ is expensive so I wanted to whitewash wall before applying it (fill ill divots, pochs, cracks, of old wall). VersaBond stuck to the old grey basement wall excellently and the whitewash looked so nice white and smooth I thought twice about putting insulation and drywall over it. Did i prepare the wall? Nope - i wire brushed it briefly. I later read DryLok or other vapor barriers can help mold in winter - so having cracks filled and done - I moved to installing insulation. I'll use VersaBond white for white washing in the future! Bonds great, looks great. And "regular lime-cement-mix whitewash" is simply not available, practically speaking.

It works well, has a good working time, and good adhesion characteristics. I usually pick up different thinkers at the tile warehouse I deal with, but sometimes I don't feel like driving across town. I have used this material on numerous occasions and always with good results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent bonding thinset. This product works as advertised. I have bonded tile on to tile, and tile onto glass block with excellent results. It's a low shrink product that works excellent with bed setting. Used it on marble and ceramic, and travatine pavers on concrete slab. In conclusion it is a very good product for the application.
