My posts have been cut to a point on top. Will these caps fit over the point without my having to cut the posts?

Answer:
There is a lip on the inside measuring ~3/8in designed to rest on the top of the post. Depending on the slope of the point, you may need to flatten the edge.

Answer:
No they won't because under the copper top is either a flat piece of plastic or wood. You'll need to cut the tops flat on your posts for these to work.

Thank you for your question. The underside trim height of the DeckoRail 6 in. x 6 in. Copper Metal High Point Pyramid Post Cap is 1 3/8” tall with a complete flat internal surface. To prevent cutting your posts, the post point needs to be less than 1 3/8” tall.

We bought 24 of these last summer to put on the top of 4x4 posts that surround our garden. In just this one year, over half of them have tarnished and turned black. Unacceptable for spending almost $300 on these tops. Can you help?

To remove an already tarnished finish, remove the old coating with mineral spirits and grade 0000 steel wool. Buff with grade 0000 steel wool for a satin finish. For a mirror-like finish, apply a car wax, or spray with a clear lacquer or polyurethane and let dry, and then apply a car wax. To encourage a natural patina, remove the lacquer with mineral spirits and grade 0000 steel wool.

Answer:
They don't fit a TRUE 6 x 6 post. I had to trim the post down by 1/4 inch to get them to fit. The alternative is to go to another place to buy them for twice the price.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Beware of misleading size specs. The web site says they fit a 6x6 post. They do not fit a 6x6 cedar post, which has an exterior dimension of 5 3/4". The interior dimension of the post cap is 5 1/2", which would fit a post in a finished wood style, not rough style as cedar posts come in. I bought the cedar posts from HomeDepot. The web site should give the actual interior dimensions of the post cap for the customer to determine whether they fit their posts. June 26, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pyramid Post Caps Post caps were easy to install using a caulking gun to add a dab of adhesive to each post. I ordered 14 caps, all arrived in good condition with simple instructions. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product Excellent product! Exactly what I needed and it is great quality. I have a grey green house color and bought the grey metal. It really looks nice. I bought 6 and all were perfect. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Post Caps Ever! We had purchased 2 other types of post caps before realizing that this design was going to be the best for our NYS weather. They are good looking and are doing the job. We highly recommend them. August 18, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great ... for about 6 months Looks fantastic at first. All shiny. Then after a few months, they start to look blotchy, blackish and oxidized. Also they tend to fall apart after about a year. About 30% of mine are now destroyed by the sun and weather. And don't put them on with glue; that doesn't last. Use screws from the side. And BTW I tried 2 other brands and they are all the same ... even those that are more expensive. If I did this project again, I'd go with the black, maybe, or maybe wooden. March 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Post Caps Great product! Bought them in store 12 years ago and only now needed to replace some of them. They were still available as online purchase all these years later. Amazing! They have improved the product so that some of the underside is plastic and thus will not rot. I coat the remaining cedar frame inside and out with clear wood preservative (deck sealer)every year to extend life of product. July 7, 2015

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Not 'Ole Rocky Top' My first purchase of this top was 5 years ago and I just replaced them. Not bad life for a $15 item. I probably shortened their life by polishing them occasionally with car cleaner/wax. My method now will be to leave them alone since I noticed some caps that I never touched are still in good shape after 10 years. All-in-all, this is a good value and easy to install. July 8, 2015
